« on: Tuesday 14 October 08 00:02 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help please with information about this Phillips family please.

Robert Phillips baptised 16 Jul 1820 (born April 1816) in Alverstoke, son of Fysher & Elizabeth Phillips. I am told there was a brother Fysher baptised the same day

I am looking for a Robert Phillips born abt. 1819 to 1820 born Hants. England, Found with a Shepard family in 1851 Loch Arkaig, a visitor to a family aged 30 years a shoemaker, who eventually married in Fort William in 1856.

His father was also a Robert (possibly Fysher?) Phillips listed on his sons marriage cert. as a ships carpenter, Mother, Elizabeth Negus.

Renfrewshire / Greenock Industrial Training Ships & Schools - Josiah Gilray
« on: Thursday 09 February 06 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Josiah Gilray, born about 1879 Greenock, and if he may have migrated on an emigration scheme, or what become of him.

Josiah Gilray is found in the 1881 Census dwelling at, 6 Roslin Street, Greenock with his father James Gilray, mother Elizabeth Phillips,  Catherine daughter born 1878. A death entry was found for a daughter Elizabeth is born 1876 but sadly died 4 months, old due to Bronchitis,

Mother Elizabeth died relatively young in 1883 aged 28 years old due to TB. Widower James Gilray eventually married a Isobella, and possibly unable to cope, or young Josiah found where he shouldn’t,  is found in the Greenock Industrial School.

1891 census, Josiah Gilray is found in the 'Greenock Industrial Training School', listed as aged 12 years old, along with a long list of other boys.

I contacted the James Watt Library in Greenock, who gave me the following information taken from the Greenock Post Office Directory of 1891 and is the entry is headed

Greenock Ragged School Association:
It is the object of the Association to reclaim the neglected and destitute children of Greenock by affording them the benefit of a good common and Christian education, and training them to the habilts of regular industry so as to enable them to earn an honest livliehood and fit them for the duties of life.
The plan upon which the school is conducted is as follows: The children receive an allowance of food for their daily support; are instructed in reading, writing and arithmetic; trained to industry by employing them daily in such work as is suited to their years; and taught the truths of the Gospel, making the children receive suitable religious teaching.

Mysteriously, after 1891 Josiah disappears, he is not found in the 1901 census, no marriage, and no death records.

Indidentally, there is a marriage of a Josiah Gilray to Hannah Wilson on 23rd September, 1892. But suspect this is James Gilray's brother.

I understand, the boys were trained on ‘Industrial Training ships’, such as the ‘Cumberland’ which would have been moored on the Clyde, she was destroyed by a fire in 1889 and replaced by a ship called the ‘Empress’.

I have read, 'boys were trained for entry into both the Royal Navy and the Merchant Service. However, after the Royal Navy decided to accept only boys of good character, the training became more oriented towards the Merchant Navy'.

Does anyone know where I might find the records for children in Industrial Training Shcools, in Greenock, and how I might find further information, or even locate Josiah Gilray.

I am looking for a Robert Phillips born abt. 1819 to 1820 born Hants. England, Found with a Shepard family in 1851 Loch Arkaig, a visitor to a shepard family (Angus) aged 30 years a shoemaker, who eventually married in Fort William in 1856. His father was also a Robert Phillips listed on his sons marriage cert. as a ships carpenter, Mother, Elizabeth Negus.

When we found this Phillips family in the 1851 census, without a son Robert listed, I was not to worried, and thought we had the right family, as the son Robert was in Scotland 1851 as you know.

Then a colleague from here (Rootschat) very kindly looked up, and sent me a copy of the 1814-1841 Baptismal Index, which listed a Robert Phillips born 1819 to this family, which re-inforced my hunch that this was the right family! however, unfortunatley I seem to be wrong, this Robert I have highlighted below, seems to have stayed in Hampshire, after looking at later census records, and I am unable to slot my Robert into this family anywhere, unless somthing is starring me right in the face, and I am just not seeing it?

So here it is, a Phillips family in Portsea,
with a little research already done, for anyone that is looking for
Phillips in Portsea. Many thanks to people in the chatroom that have tried to help,
and my friend in Hants.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Phillips - England. Hants.
« on: Tuesday 20 December 05 22:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to locate the family home of Robert Phillips born abt. 1820 born England. Hants.

Robert Phillips is found in the a remote area of Scotland, Loch Arkaig in the 1851 census, listed as a visitor to a shepard family (Angus), shoemaker, born England. Hants.

We later find, that Robert Phillips gets married in 1856 in Fort William to Elizabeth Mcpherson, and his parents are listed as, Robert Phillips (ships carpenter) Elizabeth Negus, on his marriage cert.

I really dont know how to locate the family home, and have been frustrated searching for some time now.
Incidentally, I did find a possible Robert Phillips in the 1851 census for the Isle of Wight aged 70 years a widower, however, I emailed all members with same name interest on the IOW FHS and got a reply saying that Robert Phillips was a members Great Grandfather, and no connection to mine.  ???

I did get a suggested Robert Phillips born 1819 St. Mary, Portsea. from a memeber in the Rootschat chatroom, referenced from the IGI and don't know how to proceed with this information.  :-\

One other thing to mention is that I have searched all the Philmores Old Parish Registar zips which are available online, but St Mary township did not seem to be included, and no possible Robert Phillips found.

I would be grateful for any suggestions or advice that might enable me to move forward with my search for my ancestors, many thanks.

Shaun               Merry Christmas to all  :)

Breconshire / Josiah William Palmer-Brecon & Hereford, England.
« on: Tuesday 06 December 05 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Josiah William Palmer born 27th Febuary 1896 in Ffordlas Llanigon, Brecon & Hereford. England.

Josiah married Ada Lillian Hicks on 2nd November 1918 at Fulham Registry Office.

Ada Lillian Hicks was born 1st Febuary 1898 at 13 Hoopers Court, South Kensington. London.
The census 5th April 1891 Ada is listed as an clerk for the Admirality, and died 12 May 1948 residing at 20 Chelwood Drive, Odd Down, Bath.

From family information, Josiah William Palmer at some point was orphaned to an Uncle in Canada, apparently having a lot to do with horse's on the prairie's, when the second world war broke out he joined the Navy.
I am informed that because Josiah was born in England, he was given the option to join the Canadian or English Navy and chose to Join then English Navy. (Royal Marine no. 14701)

Together they had three issue's, Frank born Bath in 1919, Pauline born ,Pontiac, Detroit, Michigan, USA in about 1930. and James, who died at 18 months old.

I would be very interested, to know who the Uncle was, that Josiah was orphaned to in Canada, also any information can anyone help please

Hello all,

I am looking for the family home or possibly army barracks of Robert Phillips who is found in the 1851 census in Loch Arkaig a very romote area Scotland.
He is listed as a visitor of a shepard family, 30 years old a shoemaker, born England Hants.

His father was also Robert Phillips who married Elizabeth Negus, I did find a Robert Phillips in the 1851 cenus for Carrisbrooke, hampshire. A widower born Whitwell, aged 71 years and living alone on the night of the census, pauper Boot & Shoemaker.

I went through Philmores index's but the parish of Carrisbrooke fields, did not seem to be there.

I would be erternally gratefull if anyone has access to the 1841 census and can locate this family, many thanks.

Inverness / 1851 census Lookup please! Sleat, Skye
« on: Friday 18 November 05 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
Elizabeth McPherson born abt. 1819 to 1822 Tormore OPR entry
Left Skye sometime after birth of her 1st son Alexander born 1849

Possibly Elizabeth's second marriage to Robert Phillips Fort William 1856 she is found with her new family in the 1861 Census Fort William, her son and herself listed as born Kilmuir. (Kilmore?)

We don’t have an 1851 Census find for Elizabeth, which might tell us her home town and where she was in 1851, but also the surname of her son born 1849.

I am sure you will agree, Elizabeth Mcpherson marrying at 34 years is quite late in life for this era, could this possible be a second marriage, and could there be a Ban/marriage entry for her in sleat?

Any information greatfully appreciated  :P

I am looking for any information on both, Catherine Robertson who married and Alexander Macpherson a fisherman.
A death entry or burial place would be very exciting, or any information, no matter how small.

Two of thier issues have been found to date, and have been searching every entry possible for thier daughter, Elizabeth/Betty Macpherson to establish her birth place, to try reveal where Catherine/Alexander might have lived and worked, even for a while.

Incidentally I have not yet found a likely death entry for Catherine Robertson or Alexander Macpherson, and they are not stated as deceased on thier daughters marriage certificate 1856, which may indicate they were still alive in 1856.

Elizabeth/Betty Macpherson 16.08.1819   Tormore, Sleat
John               Macpherson 30.12.1815   Tormore, Sleat

Below are the Census entry's I have found to date, for Elizabeth the daughter of Catherine/Alexander to establish her birthplace and movements, its worth mentioning that an 1851 entry, has not been located to date, which might tell a little more.
We think? Elizabeth had two sons, Robert born 1836 and Alexander born 1849 also listed as Kilmuir, not sure who the father is of these two sons, but they took the name Philip after Elizabeths marriage in 1856.

Elizabeth left Skye sometime after the birth of her second son Alexander 1849 and before 1856 where the family is found in Fort William, this is where Elizabeth married Robert Philip/Phillips in 1856 at Fort William.

1861 census Fort William area listed her birthplace as...Kilmuir (probably Kilmore)
1871 census Kilmalie area listed her birthplace as.........Kilmalie (dautr. Elizabeth born Kilmalie)
1891 census Greenock listed her birthplace as.............Isle of Skye, Sleet, Scotland.
1901 census Greenock listed her birthplace as.. ..........Skye, Scotland.

Back to Catherine Robertson and Alexander Macpherson! I employed the services of www.Sky-Roots.co.uk who searched the 1841 and found a possible family in Ostaig, as listed below, with Norma’s comments.

1841 Ostaig, Sleat: (book 3, page 23).

Alexander MacPherson....71.pauper
Catherine.....................62.wife
John............................25
Colin Chisholm...............10.grandson

1841 Carradale, Sleat: (book 5 pages 14/15).

John MacPherson....20.ag.lab
Betty...................15
Chirsty MacInnes....60.pauper

“This was the only Alexander & Catherine MacPherson found together in 1841 of approximately the correct age to be the parents of your Elizabeth.   This was the only Elizabeth / Betty MacPherson found in Sleat in 1841.   Neither of these entries is found in the township of Tormore – as shown in the OPR. The 1851 census of Sleat was searched and no Elizabeth / Betty MacPherson was found.  No couple named Alexander & Catherine, of the correct (appropriate) ages was found.   Although some individuals named Alexander and Catherine were found, they could not be identified as Elizabeth’s parents”.

I also emailed Clan McDonald Archives, to see if there might be any estate or rental records for Ostaig, which would give any information.
They did inform me the Ostaig farm absorbed the neighbouring farm Kilbeg in the 1820’s, and that the above family might have been, Alexander Macpherson and a Catherine Lamont, which was the family living at Kilbeg, but equally could be, and is more likely, my family ancestors from Tormore, This seems to have clouded the Ostaig family find, rather than verifying it, as this family cannot be positivly identified.  :-\
