Does anyone know if the female name 'ELVIRA' is sometimes used instead of the name Elizabeth?

Glamorganshire / Battram family - Mountain Ash/Penrhiwceiber
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 16:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find anyone who's related to or knows of the Battram family who lived in Mountain Ash/Penrhiwceiber.  William Battram was stationmaster at Nelson and Penrhiwceiber train stations.  His son Ralph was a GP and worked as a doctor for the Coal Board. Sadly he died in Reading, Berkshire in 2005.  Ralph had a sister Eva who knew my grandmother and he was a regular visitor to a farm in Leckwith.  It's possible their family may be related to my family .  I have done quite a bit of research already but have not yet found the family connection.

Glamorganshire / Benjamin Coles Whitchurch Cardiff
« on: Monday 29 March 10 01:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm searching for relatives of Benjamin Coles (known as George) who worked at the old Mill Farm, Llanishen, Cardiff.  I think he died in the mid 1920s and that he, his wife and one of his sons are buried in the graveyard of St Isan's Church, Llanishen. He originally came from Somerset and was the brother of my Gt Gt Grandfather Ephraim Coles. He also worked on Cornerswell Farm, Penarth.  I'd be interested in finding out more about him.

Herefordshire / parsons family from ashperton
« on: Sunday 28 March 10 23:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi I'm looking for anyone researching the Parsons family who were living at Heywood Cottages, Ashperton on the 1881 census.  Head of family was Thomas (born Ashperton), his wife Maria (born Ledbury) and their children - John (my great grandfather - born Ledbury), Hannah (born Brilley), and Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth and Louisa (all born Stoke Edith). John was my grandmother's father and she was born in Barry, Glamorgan.

Canada / Lost relative in Vananda, Texada Island BC
« on: Sunday 28 March 10 22:48 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find any information about my great grandmother's brother William Lewis who emigrated to Canada about 1881.  He was Welsh, aged about 18 and came from the Cardiff area.  I know he settled in Langley Prairie just outside Vancouver and eventually went to live at Vananda on Texada Island, but I don't know if he stayed there.  I think he died sometime in the late 1940s.  Family knowledge has him working as a prospector (possibly for precious metals, minerals etc) for a company in New York (?) and going on expeditions to Morseby Island and Alaska.  It is also believed that he was married 3 times but didn't have any children. I don't know where to start with my research but would be grateful for any help.  I would also like to find any of his family who would be willing to contact me.

Somerset / COLES family from Nether Stowey
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 23:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi is anyone researching a branch of the Coles family who lived in Castle Street in Nether Stowey, some of whom moved to South Glamorgan in the mid 1800's?  I'm looking for Charles Coles, his wife Charlotte and their children.  Two of their sons - Ephraim and Benjamin - moved to Cardiff and the surrounding area, I think to find work during the industrial revolution. One of their daughters Elizabeth, had a job in service to a local family. I know from the research I've managed to do so far that there were a number of Coles families in Nether Stowey at that time, but am not sure how or if they're related.  Does anyone know of any books, pamphlets etc about the history of Nether stowey that is available to buy?  I'd love to hear from anyone researching in this area so we can exchange information an help each other.

Glamorganshire / Leckwith Village
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
As well as researching my family history I'm trying to find out all I can about the little village of Leckwith (just outside Cardiff), as I grew up there.  I am particularly interested in finding out about the big house known as 'Woodlands' that became a nursing home and Ynyston Farm.  I already have quite a lot of information, but would be interested in any recollections from people who know the area and I am especially interested in any old photographs or postcards.  I am also very interested in any information about the limestone quarries in Leckwith and the people who worked in them.

Cardiganshire / Stepside near Cardigan
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information about a place called Stepside just outside Cardigan?  I am just starting to research my great grandmother's mother - Mary Jones - who came from Cardigan and on one census she states that she came from Stepside Cardigan.  From old maps I have discovered that there was a large house (possibly a farmhouse) and cottages on Gwbert Road and I believe a lot of the area is now covered by a housing estate.  With a surname like Jones it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially as her father's name was William.  When she died she was living in a small village just outside Cardiff.  If anyone can help at all that would be great. I would also be interested to hear from anyone who's looking for her in Glamorgan.

Family History Beginners Board / Winefred Jones
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
I've just joined and am a very unconfident computer user but I hope I'll be able to get some help with my family history research and help others in return.  Some time ago someone called SAXONW was searching for a Winefred Jones in Glamorgan and I think she may be connected to my family in some way. If that person is still interested perhaps we can exchange information.  I've only just returned to my family history research after a long break, so I'm rather disorganised at the moment.  I'm not even sure if I'm doing this properly so please bear with me while I learn.
