Is there any kind individual who can help me track the later (after 1881) history of this individual. He was born in Buckland Newton abt 1862, baptised 20 Apr 1862, and in 1881 shows up as a footman at 10 Downing Street working for William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister at the time. After that he disappears from the records. Thank you in advance for any help

Dorset / Ann Brown
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if any member has any information on this lady.

She married Benjamin Hounsell 16 July 1820 in Wyke Regis. On the marriage certificate the name Joseph Brown appears but whether this was her father, brother, or other relative isn't clear. Her place of birth is unknown which makes tracking her family back further difficult.  She doesn't appear in the baptism records for Wyke Regis.

I've scanned the OPC and Ancestry records. Can any kind person suggest a way to proceed from here.

Thanks

Australia / Alfred James BISHOP 1868 Swyre Dorset William GILCHRIST
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 16:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm confident the members of RootsChat will be able to help me.
Alfred James Bishop was born in Swyre, Dorset in 1868. He last appears in the censuses in 1891 as a footman for William Gilchrist, Australian Merchant, living at 200 Queens Gate E, London.  He is absent from the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
There is a marriage record to either Rosanna Smyth or Annie Alice Thornber in Kensington in Dec 1893. Whether this is the same man is unknown. There are two death records with that name in London  in Q3 1924 (Poplar), and Q3,1927 (Kensington).
I'm trying to determine the fact of his possible marriage and where he was in 1901 and 1911. Did he go to Australia possibly.
Thank you in advance if you can help.

I'm trying to track any further details of this man's life. He was sentenced to transportation for life for poaching  in 1832, was shipped to Australia on the Circassian, and was pardoned in 1845-1846.

Did he stay in Australia or return to England.

Thanks for any help or suggestions

United States of America / Charles J Tidby
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 15:02 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace this individual and his family. He is born in England in 1863, emigrates to Canada with his family in 1873, marries Nelly Julia Davis in 1894 and moves to Ramsey, Minnesota where in 1910 he is a department store manager. He has a son Robert Davis Tidby in 1898.
In the 1920 census Nellie appears as Nellie Tidby living with Robert Davis and his wife Leonora. None of them appear in the 1930 census.

I wonder why Robert gave up his family name, enumerator error ?.  And what happened to them.

I know the members here will be able to help. Thank you.

Other Countries / Harington Redfern India Canada
« on: Friday 16 July 10 17:34 BST (UK)  »
I hoping someone can help in tracking the name of the only daughter of Hastings Norman Victor
Harington, b 1855 Hourah, Bengal, India, m 1881 to Anna Mary Philson, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

They had three children, William Guy Harington b1885 d 1917 Mesopotamia, Hastings Roy Harington
b 1888 d 1942 London and the unknown daughter, who marries a Major Alan Redfern and in 1929 was living at "The Pines" Frosterdeen, Wangford, Suffolk. She had two children, Guy A T Redfern b 1917, and Thomas B Redfern b 1921

HNV Harington married again in 1909 in Bombay to Edith Redfern b 1878 - relation to his son in law ?. He retired in 1910 and they moved to England where Edith gave birth to Leonard P Harington.

HNV Harington then bought apple orchards in Edgewood, British Columbia, but it seems this was largely a real estate scam as although you could grow apples there, the land still needed to be cleared. HNV moves to Edgewood permanently in Apr 1914 after a visit in 1913. Edith and Leonard join him in Aug 1914, but life in a small backwoods village in the Kootenays can't have agreed with her and she and Leonard return to England in 1916, and then leave for Southern Rhodesia with Leonard in 1920 where she works as a civil servant. Records indicate her relative in England as Alan F Redfern of Eastbourne, Sussex, whether this is another Alan, possibly father to the Alan who married the daughter, or is the same Alan who married the daughter is unknown.

HNV makes several trips across the Atlantic in the 1920's and dies in Edgewood in 1930.

The family's comings and goings are pretty well documented in the various passenger lists, but the daughter is difficult to identify.

Many of the Redferns and the Haringtons served with the Gurkha regiments in both World Wars, so this is cross posted in the Suffolk section

Thank you for any light anyone can shed on this
