The attached photo was found in my first generation, South African grandfather's possessions (L W H James (1894-1979)).  I know they are not his parents who emigrated in the 1890's to SA where he was born, but could these be his paternal grandparents, or earlier still, who remained UK based?.  They were William James (1829-1904) and Louisa (nee Bunce) (1831-1907).

There is very little evidence to help you, only hairstyles and limited apparel but I should be grateful for any ideas you may have. Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / London Gazette 1855-Dissolution of Partnership
« on: Sunday 08 October 23 23:27 BST (UK)  »
I have come upon the dissolution of a trading partnership between two brothers whose business was on Fenchurch Street, London.  This was published during April 1855 in The London Gazette.
Can anyone direct me to further resources either online or at an archive where I may be able to further research the company name under which the brothers traded, i.e., documentation to do with its formation and dissolution which might provide personal address details, dates of birth or ages of the partners.  I am hoping such personal information might confirm whether these two brothers are members of my family.
I had wondered about the Sun Fire Office papers held by the LMA but it is impossible for me to access those as I am not London based.
Thank you for any help you are able to give me.

London and Middlesex / Education for Sons of Worshipful Company of Vintners
« on: Thursday 21 September 17 19:18 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor was a member of the Worshipful Company of Vintners from 1790 through to about 1841 (his death). He lived in Stepney/Hackney/MEOT London during these years. Three sons were born to him in the late 1790's two of whom progressed to being members of the same Company when mature enough to do so. Where might these sons have been educated based on the father's location?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

London and Middlesex / Death of Emma Carter (nee Lloyd) born Bermondsey 1862
« on: Thursday 28 January 16 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
Emma’s death occurred in Tooting Bec Hospital in 1942.  On the death certificate, under ‘Occupation’ is written ‘of 7 Fitzjohn Avenue, Hampstead, widow of Henry Carter a Carman’.  The man reporting her death was her son, Charles Carter of Carshalton, Surrey.

I am not certain that this  is ‘my’ Emma.  Everything seems to fit.  She was a widow and her husband was called Henry (died 1906)  and his former occupation had been that of a carman.  In 1939 she was resident in Lewisham, hence her possible hospitalization in Tooting Bec Hospital at the time of her death. Emma and Henry had a son Charles  and indeed, if I have followed the correct line, he and his wife Maud  lived at Carshalton for many years.  However, Emma was born south of the Thames and spent her entire life there so I do not understand the connection with 7 Fitzjohn Avenue in Hampstead.

I have researched this address and found that the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross established themselves at  3  Fitzjohn Avenue and nursed wounded soldiers here until the end of WW2.  They also acquired 5-7 Fitzjohn Avenue (date not known) which was established as a girl’s school and which closed in 1985.  No. 3 is associated with the artist Laszlo and upon his death in 1937, the sisters established themselves at this address.

Can anyone suggest why Emma may have spent time at 7 Fitzjohn  Avenue after a lifetime spent south of the Thames.

Thank you

The Common Room / COMPLETED General Query: Faculty Office Marriage Licences
« on: Thursday 06 August 15 20:15 BST (UK)  »
I have been unable to trace the marriage of William James (son of Thomas James and Mary Heitman) and Mary his wife (first name from their children's baptism records and censuses).

I came upon a Faculty Office Marriage Licence on FindMyPast for William James and Mary Wade dated 1 June 1821 and have ordered a hard copy (via SoG) to see if there is any information which confirms that this is the correct couple for my James line.  From census records I know that Mary was born in Norfolk, and more specifically, Tombland, Norwich but I have only the licence to say that Mary's surname may have been Wade but on the positive sound, one census for William James and Mary has a nephew staying with them, surname Wade, and this is definitely my William James given the name of the children and this is why I have 'homed in' on the Marriage Licence Allegation. However, I cannot trace the actual marriage and where it took place.

Upon William James marriage sometime before January 1822 (when twins were born), one assumes he and Mary would have married (having obtained a licence dated 1 June 1821).  Is it incorrect to assume that this marriage would have taken place in London? Could he have married anywhere in England?  Is it possible that they never married?

Any help advice very welcome and gratefully received.

I am researching the names of soldiers whose names are inscribed on the WW1 memorial in the village church of St Katherine and St Peter's, Winterbourne Bassett, near Swindon, Wiltshire.

I have gathered some information with regard to the early years of these soldiers but I am finding it very difficult to establish what became of them in later years post-war, who they married and whether they had children and when and where the soldier died.

If anyone is able to give me any information on the following names or assist with any photographs, I should be extremely grateful.

I am seeking information on the descendants of Matthew Wilson born 1890 and Elizabeth Clark who married at 18 Paisley Road, Renfrew, on 17 June 1915.  I believe this to have been an 'irregular' marriage.  The marriage was registered in 1956 under Decree of Declarator of 10th December 1955.  Matthew died on 20 February 1968 in hospital but his usual address was 14 Muirpark Avenue, Renfrew.  Any info on this man, my great-uncle, gratefully received.

With thanks
