Family History Beginners Board / child is annuitant
« on: Sunday 30 April 17 16:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi, upon reviewing a family census I noticed Emily Burton age 8 (in Marylebone, Middlesex, London, England) has "Annuitant" clearly written by her name in 1871. She is the youngest child of Joseph Burton. On the same census it appears her elder sister had Annuitant written beside her name, and it is partly crossed out. Emily is not described as a scholar, which I would expect. Wondering if anyone has seen this and could offer an explanation to me. Thanks

The Common Room / birth registration England
« on: Saturday 11 February 17 02:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have discovered a relative had children registered with his surname though the parents weren't married. They married five years after the first birth, and one year after the second.
Was this unusual and would there have been a penalty? they had two children in between who do
not seem to have been registered. He may also have been married to a different woman at the time.

Family History Beginners Board / Walter married Taverner
« on: Friday 11 December 15 17:11 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for some lost children. Eleanor Harding Burton, was a widow married to Stephen Walter (a shoemaker b 1808 Staplehurst Kent) at Marylebone in 1854. His first wife Elizabeth died in 1852. Stephen had four youngish children in 1854, and therefore Eleanor (my ancestor) might have taken on a stepmother role, but none of his children are with him and Eleanor in 1861 in Marylebone. I have only tracked one child, Francis Walter, who married a Mr. Taverner in Marylebone (record gives Stephen's name and occupation). I am searching for the outcomes of the other children, who were living with Stephen and and his first wife Elizabeth, next door to Eleanor, in 1851.

The Common Room / pronounciation of an Irish surname
« on: Thursday 29 October 15 02:39 GMT (UK)  »
The name is Herene, or Hereene (spelling on GRO certificates), found in Tipperary in the  1800's. It is a family surname but no one in my family knows how it was pronounced. Anyone familiar with Irish able to provide phonetic explanation (and which syllable might be emphasized)? Guesses welcome. Thanks

Armed Forces / conscripts for Boer War
« on: Sunday 12 October 14 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Looking for information about English conscription during the Boer War. In our history we have a ship's fireman aboard a troop and horse ship sailing from Southampton to Capetown on September 23 1900. Ship's Fireman was his customary occupation. This is the only incidence we know of a military vessel associated with his name and the only passenger list that gives his exact address. He is listed as having 'deserted' the ship in Nov 1900 in Capetown the date the ship sailed back to Southampton with officers aboard. No idea when he left Capetown, but he was back in East London at the same address, for the 1901 census. He was of Irish background born in Liverpool about 35.Could he have been conscripted to work aboard a troopship and if so would there have been a penalty if he was found after deserting the ship?

Family History Beginners Board / burial record
« on: Saturday 30 August 14 19:12 BST (UK)  »
I have recently made progress in finding the burial record of Emma Jane Budd, a family member.
She was buried Jan 10, 1911 and the original record is held at Waltham Forest Archives. Ancestry had noted it under England Select Deaths and Burials. The FHL film number states it is for The Parish church of Leyton, Essex, also known as St. Mary's Church. This I assume is the old C of E in Walthamstow. My quest is the actual gravesite, in other words where was she interred. Her spouse was "a gentleman" according to her will probate. I have made reference to this person in a previous inquiry on rootschat but now have this new information. Can anyone offer some advice as to where to go from here? Thank you.

London and Middlesex / hospitals for diseases of the eye in 1880-1903 London
« on: Wednesday 25 June 14 04:20 BST (UK)  »
I hope to see if there are any patient admission records, and welcome suggestions for hospital records to search. Person of interest had several operations on the eye(s) in this time period (operations mentioned in a livery document pertaining to his situation). He was not able to afford a fee. He lived in Wapping then Islington.

Family History Beginners Board / Police Constable in 1890 London England
« on: Monday 12 May 14 07:59 BST (UK)  »
It appears one of the descendants of Richard Heath of St. Pancras (dob abt 1823, Devon) appears to have been a Police Constable. I cannot find the specific details about training for such a profession, and would appreciate these.

London and Middlesex / Pimlico parish and St. George Hanover Square
« on: Friday 25 April 14 03:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello. I am happy to have received the birth certificate of my great great grandmother's sister, a Rebecca Burton born in May 1838. Her parents were Eleanor Harding and Edmund Burton, a sawyer of 6 Ranelaigh Grove. The birth certificate also indicates she was born in "Pimlico Independent parish, St. George Hanover Square." I would be pleased to know what 'independent' means in this context, as I have no idea. Is it a sign she may have been other than Church of England in faith?  Thank you
. Jan
