Technical Help / Ancestry missing gallery
« on: Thursday 27 October 22 18:27 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone else had a problem with Ancestry.
A week ago I had problems with Ancestry and on their recommendation cleared my cache.
Today I went on and although thumbnails are visible I cannot see anything in my gallery. Ancestry advise me to use Chrome, which I don't want to as it throws out my Mac, or clear my cache again.
I wonder if anyone else has had this?

The Lighter Side / GDPR and the future
« on: Friday 01 June 18 07:02 BST (UK)  »
With all the current GDPR stuff and the right to be forgotten it got me thinking what information would be availible for future historians? I appreciate that people don't want their data used without their consent but wonder if some 100 years down the line we will find ourselves in a research desert?

Staffordshire / Francis Brunt circa 1770's
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 19:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a baptism for Francis Brunt/Brant/Brent.
He is on the 1841 census living in Castle St, Penkhull aged 66 with his wife Hannah and their children.
He marries hannah Mellor (wid) in 1805 at Stoke-on-Trent Parish and his occupation is given as printer. I believe he dies in 1843 in Stoke.
I am looking for a baptism. So far the only one I can see is 31 may 1778 at Cheadle to John & Mary Brunt but I am pretty sure that this is a different Francis as there are Francis Brunt deaths in Cheadle for 1845. But I am not too sure

Staffordshire / Violin makers Hains & Hancock in Stoke-on-Trent
« on: Saturday 04 July 15 18:35 BST (UK)  »
This is getting more interesting I originally was after William Hain(e)s who lived in New St, Stoke-upon-Trent and was a carpenter who made a violin (and possibly more) in 1899. But now I have discovered another violin maker George Hancock b. 1852 Hanley who was a much admired violin & viola maker but only started late in life making his first violin in 1909, though he had repaired many before that. In the census for 1911 he is living at Wilson St, Stoke-upon-Trent and is listed as a grocer and off licence holder and in earlier census he is a butcher. So violin making was not his sole occupation. There seems to be a bit of a cottage industry going on here and I wondered if anyone else had info on these makers or instrument making in the Potteries in general?

Staffordshire / Any decendants of William Haines 1853 - 1926 Stoke-on-Trent?
« on: Friday 03 July 15 06:48 BST (UK)  »
Slightly unusual request. A friend has picked up a violin in auction made in 1899 by William Hains of Stoke-upon-Trent. I have tracked him down on census to New St (now Foden St) Stoke-on-Trent. He is listed as a carpenter & joiner so not an instrument maker by trade and my (musician) friend tells me that the violin is of an old pattern amateur construction. I am interested to know if any of his descendants are still around. He had 5 children William Henry, Arthur, Fredrick, Ann & Agnes

Europe / Death details, the lack of
« on: Wednesday 25 February 15 06:41 GMT (UK)  »
A general query. I have found quite a few death records for ancestors in France and Belgium now and they can be very useful giving the time of death, date, who their parents were, where they were born etc. but one thing is glaring in its omission none of them say "how" the person died. So with ancestors who died young I am unsure if they died of disease, accident or whatever. Are there no records for how people died?

Europe / marriage Archange Vaillant & Elisa Moreau circa 1859 help
« on: Tuesday 24 February 15 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
Here we go again..
I am looking for a marriage for Archange Vaillant (born Guignies, Belg.1819) and Elisa Moreau (born Guignies 1832 from baptism of children).
Archange was previously married to Angelique Joseph Stien, also of Guignies, who died 24 August 1857.
Archange and Elisa Moreau had a child Jules Joseph Vaillant, born Guignies 31 January 1859
So I am assuming that they married sometime between late 1857 and at a push early 1859.
I have seen a record for Elisa Joseph Moreau & A Vaillant between 1850 - 1875 Releves d'Etat-Civil - Nord, France but I can not pinpoint where the marriage took place. I have looked at Roubaix, Lille, Croix but found nothing there.
Any clues or help appreciated.

Europe / marriage: Edmond F Bouckenooghe & Adele Rosalie Deleporte Help!
« on: Saturday 14 February 15 17:41 GMT (UK)  »
I don't suppose anyone can find a marriage for these two? Edmond was from Geluwe, Belgium and Adele from Wervieg, Belgium. Their first child (that I can find) was Henri Desire Bouckenooghe born 13 mar 1854 in Roubaix, France, where the family consequently lived. However I can find no marriage in Roubaix, nor have I found one in Geluwe and I can't find Wervieg. :-(

Europe / Hooray! - Bouckenooghe family
« on: Thursday 29 January 15 06:37 GMT (UK)  »
I found my Bouckenooghe family in the 1906 census for Roubaix. And I only had to go through 2514 records individually. I'll never moan about the work transcribers do again! :-)
