United States of America / Westchester County Probates
« on: Wednesday 17 June 15 04:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
A distance 1st cousin, Alison SKIPWORTH, (nee GROOM) originally from England arrived in U.S.A 1907, worked as an actress and died 09 July 1952 in N.Y.

She married  Frank Markham SKIPWORTH in 1888 England and traveled on the SS Majestic to New York 1907 with her husband. She had no known children when she died 05 July 1952, her husband having predeceased her in 1929.

My question is where would I look in USA to locate  a probate for her? Have checked the UK and not found one as yet so now turning my attention to America, especially New York. She was buried in Kensico Cemetery, Westchester County, New York.

Thanks
Deb

Suffolk / Fish - Horse Artillery
« on: Thursday 18 December 14 03:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have hit the inevitable 'brickwall' regarding the FISH family and would be grateful for some advise as to what and where I should next look.
This is what I have so far-

Sarah FOSDIKE married Alexander FISH 1797 at St Mary's Woodbridge.

Sarah was the 4th child of Robert FOSDIKE and Catherine BERRY.

Alexander and Sarah FISH had one known child Arabella born c 1798- baptism 10 January 1798 St Mary's Woodbridge- no further evidence of Arabella or any other children.

Other than the fact that Alexander FISH was in the Royal Horse Artillery I have no further knowledge of him of his parentage.

I have searched census records, bmd records, parish records  to no avail so need help as to where this family could have disappeared to. Where was the R.H.A. based and did they serve in the Napoleonic War? Any help would be greatly appreciated in this quest :(
Many thanks

Sussex / Hooe location
« on: Saturday 09 August 14 04:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I intend visiting ancestral places in the UK next month and am hoping to find the location in Hooe for my 3x g grandfather, William FREEMAN, an ag lab, as on the 1841 & 1851 census records.

1841 census the place of residence is recorded as School Houses and 1851 it is School Farm. I would be grateful if somebody would be able to give me some clues or help to locate the area as found now.

Thanks very much

Suffolk / Well Street, Woodbridge
« on: Monday 09 June 14 01:34 BST (UK)  »
In the 1830 Pigot & Co Commercial Directory directory of Woodbridge my g.g.g grandfather (Andrew FOSDIKE) is listed in Well Street as a bricklayer and his wife Ann is listed as a dressmaker.

In September it is my intention  to  visit Woodbridge on the 'ancestral hunt' and as I can't find Well Street on a modern map where would the nearest location to what was Well street be?

St Mary's Church and Churchyard as well as Seckford Almshouse, and Theater Street are must visit places for me on this 'hunt' as  I would like to get feel of the area my ancestors lived in

Many thanks

Suffolk / DEWELL of Woodbridge
« on: Tuesday 23 July 13 00:32 BST (UK)  »
My 3x great grandmother was Ann DEWELL born possibly 1782 at Woodbridge to unknown parents.

On December 06 1803 she married Andrew FOSDIKE in Suffolk, possibly at Woodbridge and she died January 1836 after a 'long affliction' according  to a notice published 10 February 1836 in the Bury and Norwich Post and was buried 14 January 1836 at St Mary's Woodbridge.

She gave birth to 5 known children over the period 1804 to 1821, 2 of whom died in infancy but were all baptised at St Mary's, Woodbridge.

According to  Pigot & Co 1830 Directory for Suffolk she was a dressmaker, living with her husband Andrew in Well Street Woodbridge.

I so far have been  unable to locate a birth/ baptismal record for her so do not know her father, mother or even if she had any siblings. I would appreciate some  help with this 'brick wall' as I would dearly love to know more of  Ann's background prior to her marriage.

Thanks

Midlothian / 1841 occupation
« on: Monday 20 May 13 00:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Finally found my 3x g grandfather Thomas PATERSON age 45 and his son Thomas age 15 ( druggist app) on the 1841 census for St Cuthberts, Edinburgh staying at 46 Nicolson St.

His occupation has been recorded as CC. I have no idea what that could mean hence my posting in the hopes that somebody may know or be able to point me in the right direction.  I can't find CC on a couple of the old occupation websites I have looked at.

On his widow's 1879 English death certificate she is recorded as the widow of Thomas PATERSON bank cashier. Could CC be an abbreviation of something to do with this? Family tales say he was a bank manager which I think is perhaps 'gilding the lily' a little. :D

Thanks

Australia / John Laurie JONES
« on: Friday 15 February 13 03:17 GMT (UK)  »
I am having difficulty trying  to locate a male  child Evelyn, s/o John Laurie JONES and his wife Margaret Elliot Simpson. John was born at Haverfordwest Wales c 1825. Unsure of where Margaret was born but possibly it was Victoria to William Simpson & Jessie McIntosh

John married Margaret 1874 in Victoria, possibly at Bright. Margaret's 1st  marriage was to John Robert Manfield with whom she  had 3 known children born between 1863-1867 at Buckingham and Ovens in Victoria.

John & Margaret then had 9 known children between 1874-1880, 6 dying between the years of 1875-1880 all born at Bright, Victoria. Margaret died 1886 at Bright.

So far all attempts to find Evelyn (male) have been unsuccessful. ??? It is believed he eventually  may have  emigrated to New Zealand but his birth record has not been found!

Does anybody by chance have this elusive person in a tree as i would be keen to uncover more about him?

Many thanks

Canada Lookup Request / Colenso Redgrave SMITH
« on: Friday 02 September 11 04:57 BST (UK)  »
Colenso Redgrave SMITH bn 1879 Halifax, Yorkshire, England and wife Miriam Elizabeth nee JONES bn c 1882 Wales, who were married in 1905 in Lancashire, England sailed to Canada 1910. They don't appear to have returned to the UK.

They are to be found on the 1916 census at Albany Street Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Colenso is recorded as a grocery warehouse worker. No children are recorded nor have I found any record of living children in the UK.

I don't know if there were any born in Canada. I have had a  search of a Manitoba website but as births are restricted to 100 years I couldn't find any before 1911.

I would very much like to find a death date for Colenso & Miriam in Canada and to this end would be very grateful for some assistance with this mission! Did try the previously mentioned website but nothing showed on it for either of them

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Colenso Redgrave SMITH
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 04:56 BST (UK)  »
I have come up against the proverbial "brick wall" regarding information for the a man named Colenso/Calenso Redgrave SMITH so am looking for some help as to what to do next.

Colenso was born 1879 in Halifax to Edwin SMITH and Sophia CLAY. He was the 7th of 9 children born to this couple over a period of 16 years. Edwin & Sophia and several of the children sometime after 1881 moved to Lancashire.

Colenso  married a Miriam Elizabeth JONES in Q4 1905 in the Chorlton, Lancashire District. But then what happened to him?

He doesn't appear on any census records after 1881 (or I rather I can't find him) nor can I find him on any passenger/emigration military death burial or probate records after 1881 so where is he ???

I guess the possibility is he could have emigrated to some far off land whose records I can not access. Grrrrr!

Any ideas please.

Many thanks
Deb
