Ireland / Catholic Priest records
« on: Sunday 02 September 18 11:53 BST (UK)  »
Would anybody know whether there are any online resources listing details of Catholic priests in Ireland? I have looked at the Find my past church records but they seem to be predominantly Quaker with a smattering of Catholic directories that are too early for my needs. It's one of those situations where I don't know what part of Ireland I need to look (possibly Dublin or Wexford but it could honestly be anywhere) and I'm not sure what generation I am dealing with so it could be anytime between 1830 and 1890ish. Sorry to be so vague but it is a family story regarding my Granny's father or her grandfather's siblings.

Dublin / Irish national service circa 1950
« on: Wednesday 12 April 17 06:40 BST (UK)  »
When visiting my cousins this weekend, they showed me a letter written by our auntie about her brother (their father) saying that he had done national service. There is one bit that none of us understand. I wonder if anyone would be able to make sense of it for us.

"An army car came to the house to collect Fabian apparently a crack shot or something and they needed him and when he look out of the window at the car drawing up he said to me .  Will you look who they sent form.   "The Gull" .  However, I was so proud they could not do with out him.

Dublin / Information on decommissioned (?) church needed
« on: Monday 10 April 17 07:46 BST (UK)  »
One of my Cowan cousins has recently found a family letter talking about my gt gt granddad (James Cowan) being buried in a graveyard between Henry street and Jervis street. I can see from google maps that there is  converted church there now. Does anybody know a)what that church was called previous to its conversion b) if there is still a graveyard there and c) when the church was built. James Cowan died in 1869. Most of the Cowan and related families are buried in Glasnevin (including his wife) so I wonder why he would have been buried elsewhere?

Northumberland / illustrated chronicle soldiers
« on: Thursday 07 January 16 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this will be of any help to anyone but Newcastle libraries have sent out their monthly newsletter and it mentions the release of photos from the Illustrated Chronicle on Flickr. I've only looked at the first two pages so far (there appear to be over 100) and it seems to be photos of soldiers from the North East who had been injured or had died in the first world war.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Look up request - Tyne and Wear archives please
« on: Tuesday 01 September 15 11:08 BST (UK)  »
Would anybody be able to do me a massive favour and look up 3 x baptism details and 2 x cemetery details.
Baptism 1. Charles McDonald 15th January 1879 at St. Mary's Clayton Street Newcastle
Baptism 2 Rose McDonald 16 January 1881 - church as above
Baptism 3 James McDonald ? 1884                     "
The most important information I need is godparent's names

Cemetary details 1. Richard Bernard Dowling died 27/9/1950. Last address 93 Elliott Terrace, Newcastle. He was Roman Catholic.
Cemetery details 2. Agnes McDonald died 21/04/1940. Last address 16 Belsay Place, Newcastle
She was Roman Catholic.

There is one other record that could possibly be helpful but I'm not sure if it will be held at Tyne and Wear archives. I have the wedding certificate for my Gran and Granddad in Gateshead but I wondered if the church details would have more information.
The wedding was at St. Joseph's RC Gateshead on 14th May 1917 between Richard Bernard Dowling and Agnes Alice McDonald.

I know this is a big ask but I would be very grateful for any information forthcoming as I won't get a chance to come up to Newcastle anytime soon.

Dublin / parish records
« on: Thursday 19 June 14 14:30 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find details of two marriages. One in Fairview and one in Rathmines. I have the marriage certificates but they don't list the mother. Neither marriage is listed in Irish genealogy ie or RootsIreland. Is there anywhere else I would be able to find these records.

Dublin / advice needed on my Duffy dilemma
« on: Monday 16 June 14 18:14 BST (UK)  »
I have some verified information on my GGrandmother Sophie Cowan (nee Duffy)

1. Marriage cert 1879 to James Cowan (her father is Michael Duffy, occ. gardener)
2. Baptism details for her children list sponsors as Mary Anne, Catherine and Bridget Duffy (possibly sisters?).
3. 1901 census has Sophie and family living in upper Buckingham street. Her widowed sister Catherine Meehan and son are living with them. Both sisters say they were born in Co. Dublin
4. Catherine Meehan (nee Duffy)s 1885 wedding certificate has her father as Michael Duffy, occ. gardener.
5. Death cert for Sophie Cowan 1903 age 45. Informant Mary anne, daughter. She was supposed to be 45 in the 1901 census too so I hope this is the correct person.

This is where things started to get a bit difficult ::) I looked on RootsIreland for a Sophie Duffy born 1856-8. Only 1 match came up within 5 years either side of her possible birth year. The parish was Clontarf. The father was Michael and the mother was Catherine monaher. RootsIreland had 3 baptisms with the same father's name and the same or similar mother's name in the same parish. Mary Anne 1853, Bridget 1854 and Richard Joseph 1859. I couldn't find Catherine.

I thought if I could find a marriage for one of Sophie's other possible siblings with the same father's name and occupation it would help me confirm that I was nearer to confirming I had the right people and therefore I could be sure about Catherine Monaher as the mother. Unfortunately, the only marriage certificate I could find was for Richard Duffy to Bridget Conlon 1884. On the certificate Richard's father is Michael but he is a shoemaker not a gardener.

I'm hoping that someone can look at the information with fresh eyes and either tell me that I have been following the wrong family (I hope not) or point me in the right direction to find more of Sophie's siblings or their father Michael.

I wonder if some kind soul would be able to give me a rough estimate of the dates the attached photos were taken. I don't have the originals. I just hope I've managed to attach the copies properly :D

Dublin / irish genealogy ie site
« on: Friday 12 April 13 17:54 BST (UK)  »
I've just accessed the Irish genealogy ie site to look up Dublin church records. It appears to be a new and improved version with a lot more content. I haven't had a chance to delve too deeply yet but I thought I'd let everyone know.
