Ireland / Sending a child away
« on: Monday 11 March 24 17:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I have a general query about a specific situation in my family. My great great grandmother, who was born in Dublin in 1902, spent a portion of her young childhood in Galway with a family called Brady. My query is… why would this happen? There is no familial link with the Brady’s and she was put in the census of 1911 as “niece”. She was much younger than the other children (4 grown sons in the Bradys). She hated her time there. Why would she be sent to strangers?

Oxfordshire / John and Jean Curley

Hi there

I’m not sure I’m posting in the right place. I think I am.

I’m looking to trace the family of my great uncle John Curley (sometimes called Jackie). He was born in Ireland in the 1920’s and emigrated to England where he married Jean Baker (I think) and had his family.

He was my grandmothers older brother and while she is dead over 40 years her children remain curious as to what happened to uncle Jackie.

From what I’ve found, he married and lived and died in oxfordshire.

Would anyone on here have heard of the family or know anything of them?

Thanks in advance

Dublin / House in Chapelizod
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 19:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I recently found the burial records for a particular branch of my family tree.

On their burial record their address is simply stated as Bridge House, Chapelizod.

Would anyone know anything about this house, where exactly it was located, was it a big house?

Thanks a million

Galway / The Brady Family of Athenry
« on: Wednesday 22 June 16 22:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm chasing down some leads on my great granny's whereabouts during the 1911 census.

I have found her, Teresa Beatty (Dublin born) living as a niece with the Brady family of Athenry. I have traced the Brady's back a little and the Mahons (mrs Brady maiden name). The are a well known family and went on to become quite affluent in the following 20 years or so.

My problem comes from the family connection.....I can't find one. Her mothers name was Annie finnegan (Dublin born and living) and her father was one James Beatty (of whom I have no details). On the night of the census Annie was living in a temple bar tenement with her younger daughters. James Beatty is somewhere else (I can't confirm 100%).

If Teresa was truly a niece I'm wondering if anyone knows more about the Brady family background and any connection to this little Dublin girl who is living with them.

Thanks in advance

Wexford / Looking for information....
« on: Thursday 09 July 15 14:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Im looking for some information on a Margaret Taylor (50) who lived in Newtownbarry in the 1911 census. She is living with her daughter Bridget Taylor (25), her adopted son Edward Beatty (7) and two lodgers of no relation aged 5 and 3.

Im chasing the theory that Edward Beatty is my great grandmothers brother who was taken by his father at a very young age and never seen again. Im looking for any information on Margaret or even Edward and maybe how this adoption would have gone about as there seems to be no familial link between the Beatty's and the Taylors.

Thanks in advance

Dublin / Help needed with my Great Great Grandfather
« on: Monday 30 March 15 21:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Its a while since Ive posted but Im looking for help with my GG Grandfather.

From his childrens birthcerts (1902, 04, 08) I know his name is James Beatty. I suspect he never married my GG grandmother as I can find no marriage registered anywhere in Ireland for James and Annie Finnegan. Ive also checked church records for the marriage and it doesnt exist.

I know he lived with my gg grandmother on stafford street and in temple bar in the early 1900s as its listed on the kids birthcerts. He is not with the family in temple bar in the 1911 census. I dont know the names of any of his family.

Ive spoken to his very elderly grandchildren and it seems that he abandoned my gg grandmother and their kids by 1911. They say he was employed by Guinnesses (hes not in their records) and that he was in the army (cant find him there either). They all seem to know for sure that he absconded with his only son leaving three daughters with my gg grandmother. They all remember Annie talking about her son whenever a new baby boy was born into the family.

I guess what im wondering is where do I go now? How can I trace this man? Also would it have happened that many people didnt marry but lived together with their children at the time?

Any advice or help you can give will help greatly.

Thanks

Val

Dublin / Is this unusual?
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 09:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

In the course of my research I have found that my great great grandmother had all four of her children in the rotunda hospital between 1902 and 1908. They were a working class family living in a tenement and I really didn't think that working class women had their children in hospital (unless there were serious complications)!

Was it unusual for her to have all children in a hospital at this time?

Thanks

Val
