Staffordshire / Samuel Holmes b1789 Ellastone
« on: Friday 09 November 18 07:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can help or perhaps make suggestions.
Samuel Holmes born 1879 in Ellastone to Rowland Holmes and Jane Whieldon could be the brother of my 4 x great grandfather John Holmes b abt 1795. Descendants have a DNA match. I am trying to prove who John's parents were
The problem is that Samuel appears to have married at the age of 15 to Hannah Woodings in 1804 in Hanbury Staffs. Is there a possibility this could have happened? If not then who was the Samuel Holmes that married in 1804.
Thanks in advance for any help
Sue

Staffordshire / Lix Head / Six Head CRITCHLOW
« on: Monday 02 April 18 07:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Has anyone any knowledge of this area? I'm trying to work out my Critchlow ancestors. My 3 x great grandmother Mary Critchlow is stated in the 1851 census as being born in ????Head in about 1800.
I have found a lot of Critchlow families in the Alton and Farley area and wondered how big Lix Head was.
Many thanks

Staffordshire / Finney and Holmes (Holms) of Ellastone
« on: Sunday 18 March 18 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
I note with interest the recent thread on Finney of Ellastone. I don't know whether this is the place or not to ask but has anyone with connections to the above families had a DNA test.
I'm trying to trace the parents of my 3x grandfather John HOLMES born abt 1797 in Uttoxeter Staffs according to census declarations. He married Mary CRITCHLOW b 1800 in 1820 in Alton Staffs.
There are an abundance of John Holmes to choose from but I was led towards Ellastone by the fact that one of the marriage witnesses was Francis Horobin of the village.
John HOLMES could be the son of Rowland HOLMES b 1765 Ellastone and Jane WHIELDON. Rowland being the son of John HOLMES/HOLMS and Mary FINNEY
I'm not sure how strong any DNA links would be but thought it would be worth a try.

Derbyshire / Thomas ASHMOLE 1744-1827 Liberty of Findern
« on: Monday 21 April 14 16:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am researching my ASHMOLE line that seem mainly to have been in Findern. I am unsure of my 5 x great grandfather Thomas ASHMOLE`s (1744-1827) parents so would be grateful for any pointers. They could be William ASHMOLE 1697/98 and Sarah ? or John ASHMOLE 1700 and Ann WOOD. Thomas married Elizabeth EARPE in 1772
Also I would be very interested to hear if anyone knows what being called a "Yeoman of Findern" means.
I have found a UK Land Tax Redemption 1798 record that states Thomas has the "Liberty of Findern". I understand he was a grocer.

Many thanks

Derbyshire / ASHMOLE Findern, Jeremiah ASHMOLE
« on: Monday 17 March 14 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I`m looking for information on the ASHMOLE family of Findern who I have
recently started researching. They seem an interesting bunch!

Maria ASHMOLE (1781-1851) was my 4 x great grandmother. She was one of, I
think, 10 children of Thomas ASHMOLE and Elizabeth ERPE.

I`m currently investigating one of Maria`s nephews  Jeremiah ASHMOLE
(1808-1880). His parents I think were Maria`a brother Jeremiah ASHMORE
(1774-1855) and Sarah CROSLEY.

Jeremiah the younger can be traced in Birmingham as a licensed victualler in
the 1851 and 1861 census and as a retired victualler in Nottingham in 1871.

My query is whether there is any information available about the staff at
Willersley Castle, near Matlock the home of Richard ARKWRIGHT and later his
son also Richard, as a Jeremiah ASHMOLE is mentioned as being a coachman
there in the 1841 census. I`m wondering if he could be the same Jeremiah the
younger.

Many thanks

Derbyshire / Derby Militia, Samuel KENDRICK
« on: Monday 10 February 14 13:53 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there area records or information  available on the Derbyshire Militia?

My 4x great grandfather Samuel KENDRICK b abt 1772 is recorded as Sergeant in the Derbyshire Militia on his marriage to Susannah HART at Eastbourne St Mary's on June 18th 1796. I have no death details on either Samuel or Susannah.

A child born to Samuel and Susannah KENDRICK, Samuel KENDRICK 1797-1875, was baptised at the same church on February 25th 1797. Samuel in the census is later listed as being a music master in Derby.

Samuel KENDRICK  senior was previously married to my 4 x great grandmother Catherine ROOME 1769-1794 and had three children. Mary KENDRICK b1790, my 3x great grandmother, William b 1793 and Samuel 1794-1794.

Many thanks

Hi
I have no knowledge of resources available on Nottingham records and wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction.
A Derbyshire great aunt of mine, Edith Alice Wallis died 18 Jan 1954 at the Manor Hospital,Derby. Probate was granted, if that is the correct term, in Nottingham on 1st March 1954. I would be most grateful if anyone could tell me how can I obtain a copy of this Will without visiting Nottingham in person.

Durham Lookup Requests / GLADYS JOHNSON 1916-1928? fire death
« on: Thursday 28 February 13 16:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I would be very grateful if anyone has access to any newspapers that might report the death of Gladys Johnson. She was the daughter of Joseph and Edith Johnson.
She died in  a fire, according to the family in her "early teenage years", after her nightdress caught fire.
She was born in Sunderland in 1916 and it was thought the family were still there at the time of her death. I have found a death for a Gladys Johnson in Sunderland in 1928 and wondered if this was the correct one.
Many thanks
Sue
