Derbyshire / Samuel and Elizabeth Sims
« on: Wednesday 02 May 18 15:09 BST (UK)  »
Samuel SIMMS or SIMS married Elizabeth STEWARDSON or STUARDSON at St Alkmund's Church, Derby -- or it could have been St Paul's, Little Eaton, which was a chapelry of St Alkmund's.

There was another Samuel SIMMS or SIMS who married Elizabeth NEEDHAM about 5 years alterwards.

The difficulty I'm having is sorting out which children belonged to which couple.

I'm not asking for lookups here -- it's way too complicated, but I'm wondering if there's anyone familar with the area, or who might be interested in one of these families, who would be willing to help me tackle the problem.

Cornwall / Ann Sandercock born 1775
« on: Tuesday 21 March 17 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
Ann SANDERCOCK, daughter of Richard SANDERCOCK and Mary BENNETT was baptised at Cardinham, Cornwall on 6 August 1775.

According to some people she married Jonathan ELLICOTT in 1804 and had two daughters, Margaret and Gertrude Ann.

According to others, she married Thomas NORTHEY and had several children.

I think that the former marriage is more likely than the latter, There were several SANDERCOCK (or SAUNDERCOCK) families in Cornwall at the time, and those south of Bodmin Moor, around Cardinham, seemed to have little connection with those north of Bodmin Moor.

If anyone is working on these families, or has come across references to them, I would love to make contact.

The Common Room / Ada Ellwood's two marriages: Cumbria and USA
« on: Wednesday 23 March 16 05:21 GMT (UK)  »
We have been puzzled by Ada Ellwood (1876-1950). She was born in Sawrey, Lancashire (now part of Cumbria), daughter of Thomas Ellwood and Agnes Garnet.

In 1898 she married George Greathead in Burnley, Lancs, and 18 nionths later she married John Russell in Knox, Illinois, USA.

We can find no record of the death of George Greathead, and the second marriage was under her maiden name.

Ada appears to have travelled to the USA before to visit relatives in Illinois, which is presumably how she met John Russell, and thus it would be no surprise that she travelled to the USA to marry him, apart from the fact that she seems to have just married George Greathead.

There seem to be four possibilities:

1. Someone was (im)personating Ada at one of the marriages (identity theft)
2. George Greathead died soon after the marriage.
3. Ada and George Greathead were divorced soon after the marriage
4. Ada Ellwood was a bigamist.

Perhaps there is family correspondence in the hands of a descendant somewhere that may help to solve the mystery, but in the mean time I hope someone may be able to suggest a way of finding out what happened.

I've attached some family groups sheets showing what we know of the family.

Westmorland / DOBSON of Dufton
« on: Saturday 16 August 14 05:49 BST (UK)  »
We are looking for members of the DOBSON family of Dufton, Westmorland, and especially descendants of Reginald DOBSON (1575-1626) and his wife Margaret. We know that some descendants married members of the ELLWOOD (or ELWOOD) family, and these have been discussed elsewhere on Rootschat, but would like to know more of the family generally. The attached family group sheet shows what we have

Gloucestershire / Hollins family in Bristol
« on: Friday 19 July 13 09:14 BST (UK)  »
In 1845 Mary Harriet HOLLINS married Thomas STOOKE at Temple Church, Bristol.

On their marriage certificate her father is shown as Richard HOLLINS, farmer, and she is described as a spinster of 20 Temple Street.

She was born in Bristol about 1821, so if the family came from elsewhere they were living in Bristol by then. I see that a Richard HOLLINS was landlord of the Crown & Mill in Castle street in 1822, and of the Coach & Horses in Gloucester Lane in 1823, but I have no idea if this is the same Richard Hollins.

Any suggestions for further research?

I've attached a family group sheet for reference.

Devon / STOOKE, BARBER and SMALLRIDGE in Teign Valley
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for more information on Simon Smallridge STOOKE (1788-1828) of Ashton, Devon, who married Mary BARBER in Hennock, Devon in 1813. They had two children, Thomas and Francis (Thomas was my great great grandfather).

I am especially interested in finding the parents and siblings of Mary BARBER, who would have been born about 1790, but I am not sure if she was born in Hennock or somewhere else.

I'm also interested in the parents of the said Simon Smallridge STOOKE, Francis STOOKE and Ann SMALLRIDGE, who were married at Ashton on 26 June 1775. I have a note that Ann SMALLRIDGE was born in Doddiscombsleigh about 1748, but would like to know more about her parents and siblings.

I have a fair amount of information on the descendants of Francis STOOKE and Ann SMALLRIDGE, and the ancestors of Francis STOOKE, which I am willing to share with anyone interested.

I have attached some family group sheets showing what we already have, so that kind people don't look up what we already know. It is the links between the STOOKE, SMALLRIDGE and BARBER families we are looking for, and those particular BARBER and SMALLRIDGE families.

If anyone is particularly interested in the STOOKE family, there is a family forum and gathering place here:

Leicestershire / MORRIS family of Nether Seal
« on: Saturday 15 September 12 05:54 BST (UK)  »
I recently found the following baptisms on FamilySearch, in the parish of Nether Seal.

I believe they are probably the same family

Children of Thomas Morris & Sarah at (Nether) Seal
Thomas baptised 25 May 1806
William baptised 23 Oct 1808
Sarah baptised 14 Feb 1813
Elizabeth baptised 7 Sep 1815
James baptised 8 Aug 1817
Frances baptised 27 Aug 1820
Catherine baptised 1 Dec 1822

If this is correct, then four of the children, Thomas, William, James and Frances emigrated to the Cape Colony. It seems that Thomas and William emigrated first, and later invited their siblings to join them. James apparently emigrated about 1834, when he was 17, and married Mary Huskisson in Cape Town. Frances married Francis Stewardson and lived in what is now Namibia.

I would be interested in knowing about the antecedents of this family and where and when the parents, Thomas and Sarah, married, and what happened to the other children, Sarah, Elizabeth and Catherine, and if anyone else is researching this family.

Other Countries / Mauritius: Bruce family
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 03:28 BST (UK)  »
A death announcement in the Natal Mercury reports that Annie G. BARRETT (born PARK) sister of Matilda VAUSE died 19 Aug 1871 New York, aged 52. Another death announcement in the Natal Mercury noted that Alice BRUCE, wife of John BRUCE of the Surveyor General’s Department, niece of Matilda VAUSE (born PARK) died 21 MAR 1877 at Rosehill, Port Louis, Mauritius aged 28. Another announcement in the same paper noted that William BRUCE of the Storekeeper General’s Department died at Port Louis, Mauritius on 3 June 1885, and that he was a nephew of Matilda VAUSE.

I am looking for any available information about this BRUCE family, and in particular their connection with the PARK family of Bath, Belfast and Quebec.

There is more information about the PARK family here:

Somerset / HAYES family, Axbridge
« on: Tuesday 04 May 10 12:32 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather William Allen HAYES (1849-1915) was born in Bedminster, but in later life was the landlord of the Red Lion in High Street, Axbridge. He died in 1 Oct 1915, and I am not sure whether his wife Mary Barber HAYES (born STOOKE) continued to run the Red Lion after he died. I am interested in any information about HAYES families in Axbridge from 1880 to 1930 or beyond. There was a daughter Elsie Dora HAYES, and I do not know what happened to her after the 1891 census, whether she married or died soon afterwards. Earlier generations of the family were in Winscombe and in North Curry.
