Family History Beginners Board / Elusive adoption
« on: Saturday 04 August 07 20:00 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor is shown on the 1891 census as aged 9, adopted, born in Bristol and living in Cardiff. His adopted name was Bertie (Albert) Nippers.
All I know is that he was adopted before the 1891 census - where can I start to trace his original name ?

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Sherston pre 1837 marriages
« on: Saturday 30 June 07 15:23 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the offer Las Camelias. I'd be grateful if you could find any reference to the "Nippers" family in Sherston marriages. Could be spelt "nippress".

Cardiganshire / Recognise this lot ?
« on: Monday 21 August 06 20:45 BST (UK)  »
I am helping an old gentleman to create a family tree and the attached photos are two of many in his collection.
They are noted as Llanarth Sewing Class and Llanarth Sunday School.
I would appreciate any comments from anyone who recognises the locations or people shown or who can pinpoint the dates.

Monmouthshire / Ever heard of it ?
« on: Saturday 05 August 06 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Amongst some old photos I'm sorting I came across a portrait of the lady principal of Arlington Collegiate School for Girls, Newport. I gather this was a private school which was attended by a late acquaintance of mine, probably in the 1930's. The principal's name was Ann Abrahams.
Anyone ever heard of it - or her ?

Somerset Lookup Requests / Twerton Parish Records - Colebrook
« on: Wednesday 23 November 05 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
Would be grateful for any help finding parents of John Colebrook (b. Twerton 1826). John married Jane Phillips in Merthyr Tydfil in 1847 and marriage certificate shows father as John Colebrook.
I have been unsuccessful in tracing the elder John (Colebrook or Colbrook). Would really appreciate any help. Did find one John Colbrook hospitalised in 1841 but no apparent link to John (b 1826).

Glamorganshire / Where is Mount Savage ?
« on: Wednesday 28 September 05 23:25 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors, Henry Nippers, is variously shown as born in Llanhilleth, Mon (1901 census), Llanfabord, Glam (1881 census) and Mount Savage, Glam (1871 census).
It would help me to determine if this is the same person if anybody could help identify Llanfabord or Mount Savage, neither of which I have ever heard of.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1851 Look Up Jacob and Sarah Chappell
« on: Friday 19 August 05 18:39 BST (UK)  »
I posted this with an 1841 Look Up request which seems to frighten everyone off - so here goes with an amended heading.

Would appreciate any info on Jacob Chappell (b1814 Malmesbury) and Sarah (b 1812 Garton, Wilts). Are they still in Wiltshire in 1851 and any other family members ?. At some stage after they married they moved to Newport in South Wales.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 Look Up - Jacob and Sarah Chappell
« on: Thursday 18 August 05 15:44 BST (UK)  »
Jacob was born in Malmesbury in 1814 and Sarah (Maiden name unknown) in Garston, Wilts in 1812. At some stage they married and moved to Newport, Gwent.
I would be most grateful if someone with access to the 1841 census could look Jacob up and see if he was married and who was in his household.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Chappell 1851/61 Malmesbury
« on: Wednesday 13 July 05 17:04 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help a 96 year old (my neighbour) who is keen to find out a bit more about his paternal family who originated from Malmesbury.
His grandfather was Frederick Chappell, an agric labourer born in about 1844, according to the 1881 census when he had moved to Monmouthshire. His wife was Ellen Chappell, born about 1846.
Any information about any other members of his family would be gratefully received.
Incidentally I noticed another Frederick Chappell in malmesbury - a baker - so not to be confused with our man.
