West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / West Lothian Boness Monument Headstones
« on: Saturday 13 January 18 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for Mary Gibson (maiden Taylor) Father and Mothers death dates.  James Taylor and Christian ( maiden Galbraith)  married on 21 Aug 1802 so probably born sometime in 1782 Mary was born and recorded in the Parish of BoNess.  Other than that, that is all that I have.  Any help would be appreciated.  Scotlands people have no death records for Mary's Parents.  Thank you.

Fife / information on Parish General
« on: Wednesday 20 April 11 03:09 BST (UK)  »
Daniel Gibson and Ann Gilmour were listed as getting married.  One of the listings said his parish "Falkirk" Her parish "Govan"  Does this mean that he was born in Falkirk and she was born in Govan?  How do we know for sure that their parents did not move to another parish?  Please help me to understand these parish remarks.  I can see if they were in that parish, but that doesn't always mean that they were born in those parishes does it?

Renfrewshire / Anyone Near Renfrewshire that can help me?
« on: Sunday 27 March 11 06:52 BST (UK)  »
I am at my last ditch effort to find information on Charlotte Caldwell.  Scotlands People has no birth record, no death record for her.  This is all that I have.  Walter Cathcart married Charlott Caldwell on July 15th 1800 in Abbey Renfrewshire.  Together they had a ton of children.  All of these children were born in Abbey Renfrewshire.  Their address was listed as " Smithhills"  Last child born to this union was in 1825.  Walter & Charlott are not listed in the 1841 Census.  I did find some of their children.  I found a death record for Walter Cathcart who died in 1839, age 62 Born "Abbey" listed as a "carter" address " Silk Street"  I am sure this is he, for I found two of his daughters in the 1841 Census.  The youngest only 15 years old living on "Silk Street".  I found a marriage record for Walter Cathcart marrying again in 1831.  I thought it was the son Walter, but later discovered it was not his son.  So either Charlotte died between 1825 and 1831 or they were divorced?  Did they even do that back then?  I think she died.  This family did not appear to be poor.  I am sure they could afford a headstone for Charlotte.  Maybe it is gone by now.  But even if it existed, I don't know where they buried her.  Their Parrish is listed as "Abbey"  I have bought Vol 1 & Vol 2  of Renfrewshire monumental inscriptions.  I thought for sure she would be listed in that.  Maybe I bought the wrong area ??  But  she is not in those two books.  I thought they had all the records for Renfrewshire in these two books.  So was I wrong? Is there another area where she may have been buried?  Sorry to sound like a dummy but   I am lost at this point.  How can I find out who Charlotte's parents were?   If Scotlands people have no record of Charlotte's birth or Death, does this mean that the Renfrewshire historical society would have no record either?  I have spent so much on every record that I thought would give me an answer, but nothing has led me closer, other than knowing that she must have died between 1825 and 1831.  Where do I go from here?  Where could she be buried?

Fife / ? Anyone going to the Fife Scotland Archive Cental?
« on: Wednesday 23 March 11 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
I am in USA Montana.  I don't have the money to hire a researcher, but I would understand if no one wants to do it for nothing.
Here is my request if someone is going there anyway and would not mind, to search for a record for me.    I got this message from Fife Archive Central  regarding this request.  Margaret Gibson died in the Fife District Asylum.  She was born 1836  Sometime during 1891 or after she went to the Asylum and died there Sept 25, 1917.    What I am looking for is the reason she was there.  If any information is in there regarding the name Whitehead, or Marshall, Gibson or Gilmour relatives.  Her mothers name was Margaret Whitehead, Father Robert Marshall of Leslie Fife.  There is another record there at the Archives regarding Margaret's Father Robert Marshall ref number his is a draft index to Summary Trials minute book, 16 October 1834-1839 (our ref QS/1/5/1)  From being accused of trying to act as an Auctioneer.  I really need his Month and day of Birth.  He was born 1806 or 1807 I have done everything I can think of to trace his family, to no avail.  He was very poor and probably did not have a burial marker.  But he died in 1851 pathhead.  I am hoping this record at least has a date of birth, which is probably not likely, but worth a try.   I would gladly pay any copy fee's if you can help me.    Here is what the office of the Fife Archive office said regarding my 4th great grandma:

Yes we have patient records for the Fife and Kinross District Asylum. You can see a list at www.fifedirect.org.uk In the home page search for archive catalogue.

(Please note that you cannot access the records themselves online).

Her case notes should be in a volume described as 'Case notes for female patients who died between 1916 and 31 December 1926, with Post Mortem reports'.(our ref H/STR/5/2/1).

She should also appear in other records like the general register, the register of deaths at the hospital, and there is usually an order authorising a patient's admission to the hospital.

As her records are more than 75 years old they are on open access. If you are planning a trip to Scotland you can make an appointment to visit the Archive Centre.

Thank you.

Renfrewshire / Charlotte Caldwell married Walter Cathcart
« on: Friday 18 March 11 17:36 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone have anything for Caldwell's in Scotland?  Renfrewshire?  I am stuck.  I have a Charlotte Caldwell who married Walter Cathcart in  Abbey Renfrew in 1800.  I cannot find anything for her other than a whole list of children born to her and Walter.  From what I can gather there seems to be a link of extreme importance to her in the names of Alexander and Jean (jane) She followed the Scotish tradition for names.  She continued to name children Alexander & Jean, if one died bearing that name.  Her parents may or may not have been Alexander &  Jean however.    Charlotte died between 1824 and 1831.   None of her children  were born  bearing the name "Charlotte"  I can trace no family names of Alexander & Jean to Walter. I maybe putting to much in the names Alexander & Jean, but she seemed to be drawn to those names.

Midlothian / Smeatons
« on: Sunday 16 May 10 22:28 BST (UK)  »
Upon reading a death record for my 3rd G  Grandmother in 1845 it stated that she is buried in "smeatons ground"  This was in Edinburgh.  I have searched on google for such a place.  There is no mention of a burial place called Smeaton.  Has anyone ever heard of this before?  On the list of people buried she was the only one put here.  I did find that there is a place called Smeatons House, and that they did find a grave stone there, when excavating but that stone was to be dated in the 15th century.  This cannot be the same place.   I can only guess that this just was a place where people were buried if they did not have any money.  And that this place is long gone and never was an actual Cemetery.  I was just wondering if anyone else had come across something on that line?
