Antrim / Thomas John Patterson - Carrickfergus Mayor
« on: Tuesday 06 June 23 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Is anyone on rootschat related to this man? FTDNA tested? I have been told that Thomas John Patterson (3 Feb. 1893 - 30 Jan. 1981) was a nephew of Elizabeth (Bessie) Barnes Jane Dalway Patterson (about 1862 - 27 February 1941). Bessie married Thomas McCalmont (1859 - 1903), my great-grandfather Alexander McCalmont's brother. I have found a great amount of information on the Patterson family but cannot, with certainty, confirm the familial relationship with the former Carrickfergus Mayor. Any help confirming this aunt/nephew relationship is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello all,

I have recently confirmed that Hugh McCalmont (1845-1887), s/o John, was my great uncle.

Hugh McCalmont married Sarah McNeilly 21 November 1879 at 2nd Presbyterian Church, Islandmagee. They had at least 7 children.
Their daughter Mary McCalmont married Samuel Hawthorne 8 February 1900 at Trinity Church, Belfast.
They had 11 children.
Their daughter Minnie Hawthorne married James Albert Elliott 26 September 1940 at Sinclair Seamen's Presbyterian Church, Belfast.
Another daughter Maggie Hawthorne married David Anderson 4 March 1929 at Oldpark Presbyterian Church, Shankill, Belfast.
A third daughter Rebecca Hawthorne married William John Patterson 25 December 1939 at Sinclair Seamen's Presbyterian Church, Belfast.

Hugh & Sarah's son William McCalmont married Elizabeth (Lizzie) McCallion 8 January 1912 at Raloo, Antrim.
Also, son Hugh McCalmont married Mary Mawhinney 16 August 1916 at the house of her father William Mawhinney, Ballypriormore, Islandmagee.

What I am hoping to achieve with this lengthy post is contact with anyone related to those families listed, plus other McCalmont families.

Thank you for your patience.

Roger

Antrim / Mawhinney relationships
« on: Sunday 15 August 21 19:07 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Researching genealogy for over 20 years I thought I had the process down pat. Obviously not.

At Islandmagee, Antrim I have Agnes Mawhinney, born 31 October 1907 - died 18 September 1914, daughter of William Mawhinney, s/o William, & Sarah Orr, d/o William Orr & Mary Flack. The registry of death indicates that Maggie Forbes, Aunt, was present at death.

I have checked available online resources for a birth or marriage connection to Mawhinney, Orr & Flack without finding any reference to Forbes.

My question is; 100 years ago did the term 'Aunt' include great-aunt & beyond; or is 'Aunt' used for a close family friend? Does anyone have a suggestion on how to find Maggie Forbes?

Thank you for any assistance.

Antrim / Boyles or Pollock on Cosgrave Street
« on: Sunday 19 July 20 20:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello all.

I'm looking for Boyles & Pollock families on Cosgrave Street, Belfast. Are there any Belfast directories after 1960 where someone could do a look-up for me?

Thomas Boyles married Kathleen Dodds 4 September 1935 at People's Hall (Methodist), York Street, Belfast.

Thomas Boyles was brother of Mary Jane Boyles who married Edward Pollock 4 April 1923 at Newington Presbyterian Church, Shankill, Belfast.

Both T. Boyles & E. Pollock are on Cosgrave Street in 1960 and I would like to know how long they continued to live on that street to hopefully narrow my search for their deaths & family info.

My sincere thanks for any information on these families.

Roger

Lancashire / John & Mary Jane McCalmont (nee Charles) COMPLETED WITH THANKS.
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 16:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

This is my first research in England so I hope it works out.

John McCalmont, born 1 June 1883 at Ballymoney, Islandmagee, Antrim, Ireland, son of Hugh McCalmont (1845-1887) & Sarah McNeilly (1853-1935) married Mary Jane Charles, daughter of Henry, on 3 April 1923 at Cathedral & Parish Church (C.O.E.), Manchester, Lancashire, England.

Here's the sticky part.

In Southern Cemetery, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, Manchester there is a burial of Mary Jane McCalmont on 30 June 1932. Findagrave has a photo of the headstone but it is difficult to read & the age at death impossible.

I'm not certain this woman is the one I'm looking for, but do not wish to spend 12 pounds through the Manchester pay per search on a hunch. I would like to know the woman's age; or who caused the burial. Can anyone help in this matter? And if you can find John, or family, all the better.

Just out of curiosity, why were 15 people buried in the same grave around the same time?

Thank you.

Roger

Antrim / anyone related to McCalmont/Hawthorne & Moore/Boyles?
« on: Tuesday 04 September 18 19:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

If anyone is related to, or has knowledge of, the following Belfast families I would appreciate contact.
I am almost positive they are related to my McCalmont family from Islandmagee because Hugh Moore, hopefully 1st cousin of Mary McCalmont & brother of Mary Jane Moore, witnessed both marriages at Trinity Church. Hugh Moore died a bachelor in 1948.
I know there are probably hundreds of Hugh Moore's in Belfast around that time but I live in hope.

Mary McCalmont (died 21 May 1954 aged 73 – d/o Hugh McCalmont a mariner) married Samuel Hawthorne (died 21 December 1934 aged 68 – s/o James) on 8 February 1900 at Trinity Church, Belfast; witnesses: Hugh Moore & Lizzie Simms. They had 11 children.

      (1) Minnie Hawthorne – born 15 February 1901
      (2) Samuel Hawthorne – born – 13 March 1902
      (3) Hugh Hawthorne – born – 25 September 1903 – died – 23 June 1919
      (4) Sarah Elizabeth Hawthorne – born – 25 April 1905 – shows mother McConnell
      (5) Annie Hawthorne – born – 21 January 1907
      (6) Jane Hawthorne – born – 18 March 1909
      (7) Maggie Hawthorne – born – 18 December 1910
      (8) John Hawthorne – born – 9 November 1912
      (9) Rebecca Hawthorne – born – 13 November 1913 – died – 9 February 1915
      (10) James Hawthorne – born – 8 December 1915
      (11) Rebecca Hawthorne – born – 20 May 1918

      (1) Minnie Hawthorne married James Albert Elliott (riveter s/o William    Henry Elliott – deceased) on 26 September 1940 at Sinclair Seamen's    Presbyterian Church, Shankill, Belfast, Antrim; witnesses: Sarah E. Hawthorne & Thomas Henry Thompson.

Mary Jane Moore (died 15 February 1959 - d/o James Moore a labourer) married James Boyles (born 3 August 1872 – died 14 March 1912 aged 39 a labourer – s/o John an engine driver – died 26 Dec. 1900 aged 60 & Agnes White – died 7 Feb. 1919 aged 76) on 11 July 1893 at Trinity Church, Belfast; witnesses: Hugh Moore & Mary Ann McDonald. They had at least 9 children.

      (1) James Boyles – born – 9 June 1894 – died – 18 April 1895
      (2) Hugh Boyles – born – 2 June 1896
      (3) John Boyles – born – 27 January 1898
      (4) Mary Jane Boyles – born – 5 April 1900
      (5) Robert Boyles – born – 26 July 1902
      (6) David Boyles – born – 2 September 1904 – died – 24 July 1967
      (7) Agnes Boyles – born – 14 January 1907
      (8) Thomas Boyles – born – 26 June 1909
      (9) James Boyles – born – 9 October 1912

If I get no positive response at least my research data may help someone else.

Thanks.

Antrim / Sarah Hawthorne, Belfast, HELP! COMPLETED with THANKS
« on: Wednesday 29 August 18 17:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

According to the 1911 Ireland census Sarah Hawthorne was born about 1905 in Belfast to Samuel Hawthorne, a mill overlooker, & Mary McCalmont, who married 8 Feb. 1900.
I have found on GRONI all 10 of Sarah's siblings using various spellings for her mother & a straight searches for Hawthorne & Hawthorn births. I searched GRONI from 1900 onwards with no luck. There are several Sarah's but not the one I'm looking for.
I even searched scotlandspeople on the off chance the family had lived there for a short time; no joy.
I have found my Sarah Hawthorne at 61 York Road, Belfast in the 1960 Belfast directory & proved through previous years the correct family.
Can anyone suggest what I have overlooked in finding Sarah Hawthorne's date of birth?

Thank you.

Antrim / COMPLETED - Co. Antrim cemetery recognition
« on: Monday 30 October 17 17:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

Does anyone recognize the cemetery in the photo?
James Stanley McCalmont lived at Windcrest, Islandmagee at the time of his death in 1977.
I don't know where the accident occurred.
I am hoping to connect with any relatives he may have & if I can learn where the cemetery is they may have information as to who paid for the burial etc.
I have been unable to find online any newspaper reportage of the accident or an obituary/death notice.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Australia / GARDINER family Western Australia
« on: Friday 29 September 17 13:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I think brackets 8 produces a smilie face; not my intention.

I haven't been here in a long time but recently made another Australia connection.

I wonder if anyone on Rootschat is also connected to, or knows about, my Gardiner kin.

   (3) Sarah McCalmont married Samuel Gardiner (died 31 July 1962 Perth, Western Australia – s/o Samuel) on 27 July 1899 at 2nd Presbyterian Church, Islandmagee. They had 13 children.

      (1) Jeanie Gardiner – born – 15 July 1900
      (2) James Gardiner – born – 13 January 1902
      (3) Samuel Gardiner – born – 7 November 1903
      (4) Thomas Hugh Gardiner – born – 19 May 1906
      (5) Robert Gardiner – born – 1908
      (6) Sarah Campbell Gardiner – born – 7 November 1909
      (7) William Gardiner – born – 7 November 1911 – died – 11 March 1995
      (8) Mary Gardiner – born – 5 May 1914
      (9) Joseph Gardiner – born – 5 May 1914
    (10) Lucinda 'Lucy' Victoria Gardiner – born – 1916 – died – 7 July 2008
    (11) Victor Gardiner – born – 13 June 1919
    (12) Violet Gardiner – born – 13 June 1919
    (13) unknown Gardiner – born after 1923

Sarah McCalmont & Samuel Gardiner, born in Northern Ireland, married 27/7/1899 on the Island of Magee. They moved with three boys to Ardrosson, Scotland. A further 9 children were born there, and the thirteenth child was born in Western Australia. Robartsons of Merredin nominated the Gardiner's to Australia. Samuel and three sons, James, Thomas and Samuel Jr. embarked on the ‘Euripides' & arrived in Albany W.A. 28/7/1922. They proceeded to Nangenan. Sarah and nine children sailed from London aboard the 'S.S. Berrima' on 28 December 1922 and upon their arrival in Australia on 3/12/1923 the family moved to the Wilgoyne area. They had cleared nearly 1000 acres but were forced off by the end of 1929.

(10) Lucinda Gardiner may have married a Thomas Lockley in 1935 at Perth, W.A.

If anyone can connect with this family & is willing to share information I can provide a few documents.

As always any help is greatly appreciated.

J.A.M.
