Armed Forces / 29th Regiment of Foot-Bartholomew Blake
« on: Friday 09 February 24 19:14 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if finding a solider who was active from 1729-1762 in the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot is too far back in the records to find. I would like to know more about Bartholomew Blake. He married Martha Bowler (whose father or brother was Walter Bowler of Kinsale/Cork, Ireland) but I do not know when that happened. I have found a few military references in books (Ensign 1727, Lieut 1739, Captain 1750, Lieut Col 1762) and the Irish Deeds and Chancery records but not his military record. Any help would be appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Boyd's Marriage St Mary Le Strand
« on: Monday 25 September 23 23:08 BST (UK)  »
I found a marriage record that I am interested in trying to find in the hopes there are a few more details and I can look at the an original entry. It is the marriage of "James Rowth" and "Sarah Right" married in 1647. The FindMyPast transcription (Boyd's Marriage Indexes, 1538-1850) states the marriage was in Westminster, St Mary Le Strand. Am I lucky to just get the transcription? Would there be more information if I went to a library e.g. my local Family History library and located the correct volume of Boyd's in their book collection? I tried to find the record in the St Mary Le Strand records available through Ancestry in their "Westminster, London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1558-1812" but it looks like the years 1645-1651 are missing. I could not find a note in the volume that went before and after as to why these years are missing. Any information would be helpful and thanks!

London and Middlesex / Fortune Foord/Ford
« on: Friday 16 June 23 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the death of Fortune Foord/Ford and her husband Daniel Foord/Ford and maybe a probate record from The National Archives (free or pay). One of them died 27 Nov 1700 (I am assuming it is Daniel or do I have that mixed up?) according to a handwritten record on an index card that I found in a genealogy website.
The record states (in bold):
FOORD als DORRINGTON, Fortune Bow, [Stepney], Mdx.
Her first husband was John Dorrington, mariner, married in 1652, Saint Dionis, Backchurch, London
Ad. to Daniel F., esq., h.
Daniel Foord/Ford is her second husband, married in 1682, St Mary, Marylebone
(Adm. d.b.n. Oct 1704)
27th Nov. 1700
76 219

I think these numbers refer to a probate (maybe an inventory but the main number is missing (e.g. Prob 11).
Does anyone have a suggestions? I did search the archives with various spellings for a probate as well as two genealogy databases without luck for a death or probate record (other than the card found). There are plenty of lawsuits in the archives using their names but no sign of a will for either. Thanks for any suggestions.
A previous discussion I had about Fortune and her father can be found here:

London and Middlesex / William Smith, citizen and woodmonger, Limehouse
« on: Thursday 20 April 23 01:05 BST (UK)  »
Recently I posted a question regarding the marriage of Fortune Smith in 1652: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=871884.msg7431275#msg7431275
I am continuing the hunt for more information about her. I know that her father was a citizen and woodmonger who lived in Limehouse, Stepney from this record in the National Archives https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/82cb410e-14f2-4698-92bc-43575f03bf05. She was also listed in the London archives in their Court of Orphans collection https://search.lma.gov.uk/scripts/mwimain.dll/144/LMA_OPAC/web_detail?SESSIONSEARCH&exp=refd%20CLA/002/04/360. Both documents were from 1652 (marriage and Court of Orphans) and both refer to Wm's will. The documents do not say when he died. I have been looking for a will for William Smith/Smyth/Smythe but haven't found one in Limehouse or Stepney or a will that states a William Smith as citizen and woodmonger between 1632-1652. I assuming he could have died when Fortune and her brother Johan were very young. I am wondering if there might be a resource that lists woodmongers in London during this time or if there might be other names for this area of London to help me find this needle in a haystack. I do have names of other citizens involved in the orphan documents if this might help but I can't find any obvious family connections to help. Thanks.

London and Middlesex / Saint Dionis Backchurch, marriage record 1652
« on: Thursday 06 April 23 16:11 BST (UK)  »
I noticed that the record of the marriage of John Barrington (should be Dorrington) to Fortune Smith 10 Mar 1652 Saint Dionis Backchurch includes what was transcribed as "Mrs" in several genealogy databases. Here it is in familysearch https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V52H-NNQ. I think this should be Miss. The only thing I know about Fortune is that her father was William Smith, woodmonger (Middlesex) according to a source related to the marriage. This is another reason why I think this title is Miss. Thanks for your opinion!

London and Middlesex / James Rolfe husband of Sarah Wright, 17th century
« on: Friday 24 March 23 18:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am unable to find a marriage, death or will for James (?) Rolfe (Rolph, Roffe etc) of London. I found his wife Sarah's will from 1693, proved in 1694 (St James, Westminster, widow) where she lists their children Hannah, Sarah, Rebecca and Lydia. I know the name of Sarah's husband because her brother, William Smith,  (baker and brewer, Westminster), mentions his sister "Sarah Wright" (not sure why her last name is different), wife of "James Rolfe", in his will from 1656, proved 1657. In Sarah's will, she leaves messuages and tenements on Eagle, Portugal and Rider Streets in London to her adult daughters, and mentions their spouses and grandchildren. She also leaves them carroons (some type of licensed cart) so the family must run a business. My assumption is that it was James'. Here is Sarah in the 1693 https://www.british-history.ac.uk/no-series/london-4s-pound/1693-4/westminster-eagle-streete-east Her will is also mentioned here https://www.google.com/books/edition/Rolfe_Family_Records/hEQbAAAAYAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22Sarah+rolfe%22+1694&pg=PA330&printsec=frontcover
Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Essex / Essex Non-Conformist Church Records, 1613-1971
« on: Monday 20 February 23 20:43 GMT (UK)  »
I found a marriage record for Anne Heather and John Nelthorpe (transribed Welthorpe) married in 1710 here:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6ZB6-5XD1?cid=fs_copy
I am not able to go the our local FHL to see if it is in their collection in person. I do know that this cannot be shared through the FHL request service because I tried but it is against the agreement they have (which I completely understand). I am trying to verify that John was a widow and his occupation (if I am lucky) as well Anne's age. I am not able to find it in any of the genealogy databases or freereg.com. Is anyone familiar with the Essex Archives? I just tried searching their catalog without luck for this specific set of records. I also wonder if they have a paid service to obtain a copy? Thanks!

London and Middlesex / Jane Booth Grinsell
« on: Friday 03 February 23 17:59 GMT (UK)  »
I had tried to find the will of Jane Grinsell (nee Booth) born 1629, wife of Humphrey Grinsell and the step daughter of Emery Hill.
Here is her burial record (found in FindMyPast):
20 Mar 1671 Mrs. Jane Grinsell, Burials (Burial), St. Margaret Westminster - Parish Registers, 1666-1699
Her will is referenced in the UK Archives link below because of her charity: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/cf52b041-5ff5-4d65-9ceb-adb84c6cd2a1 .
I cannot find her will (written in 1670 but again she died in 1671) in the UK Archive collection. My guess is this is probably due to a spelling variation-tried Grinsell and Grimsell. I have also tried the larger genealogy databases without luck. Thanks for any advice!

Leicestershire / Henry Bainbrigg will - died 1700
« on: Wednesday 18 January 23 14:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am struggling to find a will for Henry Bainbrigg(e) who died in 1700. Below is a citation (original document was available as well). The last name transcribe differently and the is month not correct. In the original the transcriber thought the month was Dec but it looks to me like do or ditto and the entries above are September, but I could be wrong. Henry Bainbrigg owned property in London and lived in both places. I believe, the son of William Bainbrigg and Mary Ireton and married Hannah Welby, who died, and then Elizabeth Nelthorpe (married in London, 1681 St Katherine Cree). I would be surprised if he did not have a will but I guess it is possible. I have tried the UK Archives and the usual genealogy databases without luck. Thanks for any ideas or knowledge about Leicestershire wills.
