World War One / Discharged Para 15 (D) QMAAC Regulations
« on: Thursday 29 September 11 16:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if any one can help with this.
I have the record of a great aunt who served in the QMAAC and was discharged in 1919 under Para 15 (D) QMAAC Regulations.
Does any one have a copy of those regulations?

Thanks
Linda

The Common Room / What is a Berten fall? – (Part of a boat.)
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 12:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

In a newspaper account of an attempted rescue by a lifeboat there is a mention of a “Berten fall”. The article doesn’t clarify except to say “runs from the mast-head and used to get the anchor aboard.”
Please can some one explain in simple terms what a Barten fall is.

Many thanks

World War One / New Zealand Expeditionary Force
« on: Wednesday 13 July 11 22:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I found a reference to an Army Roll listing a relative who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. It shows the 31st Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Company left Wellington, New Zealand on 16th November 1917 bound for Liverpool, England.
Can any one please tell me which area they would have served in Europe?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Passenger lists to New Zealand and Permits
« on: Monday 20 June 11 16:51 BST (UK)  »
While searching passenger lists leaving the UK bound for New Zealand I found one marked "Arranged through the office of the High Commissioner of New Zealand".

Most of these are listed under a "Permit number" but some listed as "I.O.S."

I would guess these passengers are on an assisted passage scheme but what does I.O.S. signify?

Kent / Answered - R and E in the Parish Records of St Nicholas Rochester
« on: Tuesday 26 April 11 23:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Most of the early baptism, marriage and burial entries for this parish start with the letter R or E.
I have attached a clip.
Does any one any idea what this relates to?

Thanks

The Common Room / Opinions please on anomalies in marriage register
« on: Monday 11 April 11 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I recently found a number of entries in the marriage register for one English parish that had simple entries like "Fred Smith and his wife were married 1 August 1625"

I have researched for several years over quite a few parishes and was surprised to find this type of entry.

The writing is in the same hand so not a case of different curates doing things different so wondered if these might be common law marriages who have been persuaded to make it legal in church or just a case of the curate being lazy or forgot to note both names.
The entries were alternated with conventional entries with both names of bride and groom entered.

Opinions please.

The Common Room / Amelia McQuestion burial after ship blew up
« on: Wednesday 06 April 11 18:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am always intrigued with finding snippets of information found in Parish Registers. Although this is not connected to my own research but so out of the ordinary that I thought I should post it here in case any one happens to be researching this family or this event.

This is a clip from the PR of a burial at Shorne in Kent of Amelia McQuestion the daughter of Thomas McQuestion of Spanish Town Jamaica. The circumstances were less than usual "killed by the blowing up of a Jamaican ship laying in The Thames"

While we were debating this, one of the chatters found a link to a reference that appears to match the person named in this burial.
http://www.bwisc.org/50_bulletins/b177_199806/b177_199806.pdf

On page 60 is this reference:-
“On August 23 1759, the ship "Friendship" from Jamaica was in the Thames when she blew up with the loss of several lives. Among the dead was Amelia McQuestion the daughter of Thomas McQuestion of Spanish Town Jamaica.”
