Armed Forces / Looking for help with a blank Naval record - why would this be?
« on: Sunday 21 January 24 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the life (and death) of one George Ketchley who joined the Royal Navy as a boy in 1866 and, again, 'as a man' on his 17th birthday on March 28th 1870. I think for a period of 10 years.

I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how this system worked and why his record (which I have from the National Archives) might be blank. (THe sheet that usually has ships and dates served etc is there, but empty)

George was from Hampshire. He married in Liverpool in Feb 1878 and fathered a child born in Boston, Massachusetts in November 1878. On his marriage certificate he is described as 'a mariner', could he have still been in the RN (as this date is within his 10 year service period)? Is there a way to trace ships, naval or otherwise from Liverpool to the USA in this period?

Finally, I can find no further info on George in either the UK or US. His wife appears to have married again in Massachusetts in 1888 so, unless this marriage was bigamous (which is a possibility) George died between February 1878 and Sept 1888. TIA

I am looking for help with all of the above but mostly George Ketchley and his wife Henrietta. George joined the British Royal Navy in 1866 as a boy and then 'for real' on his 17th birthday on 28 March 1870. I have his record, it is blank.
On 23 Feb 1878 George Ketchley married Henrietta Quinn in Liverpool. George is described as a mariner. On 4th November 1878 they have a daughter, Henrietta Mary, born in Boston. She is baptised on 24th November and in the 1880 US census is in the Massachusetts Infant Asylum.
I do not know whether her parents died or whether she was abandoned.
I have a record for a marriage of a Henrietta (S)ketchley, maiden name McQueen, to a William E Murphy in Danvers in 1888. She was a widow & this was her second marriage so Quinn may be a misspelling of McQueen (or vice versa). William E Murphy was a seaman and there may be an Irish connection. I cannot find William and Henrietta beyond this date.
Can anybody help please??

Surrey / Addison family Camberwell - Arthur Eli Addison
« on: Thursday 02 January 20 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I am looking for help in tracing the members of the Addison family who in 1851 were in Havil Street Camberwell although they also appear to have owned a property in Sumner Street Southwark.

The father, Richard Brown Addison, born 1907 in Salford has various financial difficulties (London Gazette) in the 1840s. His wife Ann nee Sykes died in 1852 and he died in 1853.

Their older children are pretty much independent so go off alone and marry etc. Daughters Mary & Ann and a son Frederick Taylor (21, 17 and 14 when their father dies) move up north and in 1861 are with their father's sister Ellen Addison in Salford.

There was however a younger child Arthur Eli Addison, born 1849 in Camberwell, who I cannot find in 1861. I know that he worked on the railways and ended up in Lancashire but I would like to know what happened to him as a child.
Any help appreciated.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Gossip family Thorp Arch, York
« on: Tuesday 16 May 17 14:46 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for help with information about the Gossip family of Thorp Arch near York in the period 1790-1841.

I know that William Gossip inherited what I think was just the use of the hall from his uncle Wilmer Gossip in 1790. At this point William Gossip was 20 and a student at Oxford. I know that he did not complete his studies. I am connecting the two events.

Burke's reports that he married twice. I can find a marriage in London, to Elizabeth Thirkill, in 1795 and a marriage to Phoebe Dykes in York in 1833. I know that the latter marriage was him as this is family. I need confirmation re his marriage to Elizabeth and also information re her death.

Burke's also reports that William died without issue. He did however have two children in 1815 and 1819 with Phoebe. He recognised these children as his natural children in his will, made in 1833 after his marriage, and before his death, in the same year.

I think that William's grandfather, another William Gossip, created some sort of trust for Thorp Arch in his will. He died in 1772 and his will is online. I cannot read the will and would be grateful is any-one could advise.

There is a record from the Manchester Grammar School registers which says that William lived at Thorp Arch 'for some time' before giving it, in 1814, to his brother Randall. This is supported by the subsequent births, at Thorp Arch, of Randall's youngest children.

So, William inherits in 1790 and does what for 25 years?

He impregnates a local farmer's daughter in 1814 and her son is born in 1815. I can find no acknowledgement at this stage of William's involvement.

In 1819 a second son is baptised in London and is clearly identified as the son of William Gossip and Phoebe Dykes.

Then nothing more until 1833 when William married Phoebe in York and dies 4 months later. His will and her will are both online.

Could any-one help fill any of the gaps or tell me where I could look? Thank you.

England / Christopher Dixon Dickinson: Death of wife and subsequent marriage 1845-49
« on: Wednesday 18 November 15 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello I am looking for help, either look ups or ideas where to look, for events in the life of Christopher Dixon Dickinson (sometimes Dickenson) born 1817 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Father, Joseph, an auctioneer.
In 1841 census Christopher is in Hull and recorded as a Spirits merchant. The Dickinson family, in Louth, Lincolnshire, appear to have had (and on occasion lost) money.
In 1843 CDD married Caroline Laverack in Hull. She was the daughter of Martin Laverack a corn merchant.
CDD and Caroline Laverack had two children: Caroline Dickinson in 1844 and Joseph Dickinson in October 1845. Both born in Hull.
In the 1851 census, CDD is living in London with both children and a new wife. The new wife is Ann Chapman Hooper nee Herring, the widow (1835) of naval Lieutenant John Tancock Hooper.
CDD and Ann's first child Christopher Robert Dickinson was born in London on July 31st 1848.
This gives a small window - October 1845 until end of 1847 (assuming they were married when Ann became pregnant) - for the death of Caroline (Laverack) Dickinson and the marriage of CDD and Ann Chapman Hooper. I can find neither. I also cannot find Ann Chapman Hooper and her daughter Charlotte Agnes Cooper (b 1834) in the 1841 census.
Something is amiss and CDD in 1861 census is listed, with Ann, as a visitor in her household. In between he has been in the workhouse - they also have more children.
Any ideas? Or suggestions?
Thanks

US Lookup Requests / Look up and info Lowe family Toledo, Ohio
« on: Tuesday 04 June 13 07:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am looking for info on the above family.

I have Canadian Frank(lin) C Lowe in 1900 census in Toledo with wife Lula (believe to be Louette Jane Callahan/Callaghan) and 3 children - Frank E, Harry (really William Henry?) and Mable M Lowe. I have no marriage record. He appears to be an out of work house painter. A final child Charles Alonzo Lowe was born in 1900.

By 1910 they are not together. Lula, now 37, is back with her parents in Washington, Hancock, Ohio. she is recorded as being divorced. Are there divorce records? How common was it in 1900s?

I cannot find him at all.........in 1917 I think he volunteered in the Canadian forces as George C Lowe, he gave Frank E Lowe of Toledo as his next of kin.

Charles aged 9 appears to be in Lucas County children's home, I cannot find the other children.

Ultimately I would like to find out more about Frank/George and to see what happened to his American family. If I am correct, he married an English relative  of mine during WW1

Durham / Robson Evans, Mary Riddell and Lancelot Vasey
« on: Friday 31 May 13 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Robson Evans has featured large on here in other threads....Robson Jnr married Mary Riddell in Wolsingham in 1850 (there is another 1948 version of the marriage - any ideas?)

In 1851 Mary (and 2 young children) is with her 'grandfather' Lancelot Vasey in Wolsingham. In 1841 she is with him and his wife Mary.

In her marriage details on Durham online her father is described as William Riddell. presumably he was married to a Vasey daughter but I can't find a marriage. How is Lancelot Vasey, Mary Riddell's grandfather??
Thanks
