Lancashire Lookup Requests / Rochdale Directories 1930 & 1935
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 23:02 GMT (UK)  »
Currently researching an individual - Sophia Bamford, nee Briggs.  She may have in initially married a John Henry Mycock in 1881 in Rochdale. Went to Maine in the US circa 1885. Married a John T Bamford in 1905 in Maine (John also from Rochdale)

After her husbands death she visited the UK twice at least, once in 1930 and the second time in 1935. The passenger list give her addresses in the UK as ...

1930 - ?32? Regent Street, Rochdale.

1935 - 34 William Street, Rochdale

Are there any directories existing where I could find out who was resident at these addresses at those dates. It would seem likely to have been relatives.

All thoughts, suggestions etc welcome.

All the best

Dunbartonshire / Wellcroft House Helensburgh
« on: Monday 20 December 10 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping somebody can confirm for me that Wellcroft House and 80 John Street, Helensburgh are one and the same place. I have info placing my wife's g aunt Jean Dougall MacDonald at "80 John Street, Helensburgh" and at "Wellcroft, Helensburgh". I think these are the same places i.e. there is a house called Wellcroft at 80 John Street, Helensburgh but would be grateful if someone might be able to confirm this? Have found some stuff on web but contradictory.
I believe that she lived there during the 1940's and 50's and probably into the 60's, possibly with her husband Alexander, and at sometime her sister Margaret (Dougall?) and in the early 1950's her sister Elizabeth Johnstone McNicol.
Any info on the house and\or its residents during the 1940's to 60's or help on how I could find out more gratefully  received.
All the best and festive wishes   :)

Surrey Lookup Requests / Andrew and Elizabeth Anderson of Croydon
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 20:05 BST (UK)  »
Elizabeth Hendry, my great aunt, born 30 May 1874 in Glasgow, daughter of Ebenezer Hendry and Agnes Williamson married Andrew Anderson son of Jane Elliot Williamson and George Murray Anderson 0n 10th December 1899 in Calcutta, India. They moved back to the UK and Croydon possibly sometime between 1911 and 1922.
They ccrtainly lived at 2 Park Hill Rise, Croydon approx 1922-1936, before moving to 15 Chepstow Road where they stayed up to the demise of Andrew Anderson on 31 January 1950. Following his death, the widowed Elizabeth moved to 26a Chatsworth Road where she remained until her death on 5 September 1958
Elizabeth and Andrew had two daughters I know of -
Agnes Jeanie Helen Anderson, born on 15 August 1901 at 4 Albany Street, Maryhill, Glasgow. Agnes married Leo Francis Jones on 26 September 1931 , Croydon. Agnes passed away in 1948, aged 47, in Croydon. Leo remarried on 15 April 1950 in Croydon to Nancy Catherine Phillipa Turner nee Symons. Leo  F. Jones died on 11 May 1978, Epsom.
Elizabeth Margaret Anderson born on 5 January 1907 in West Looe, Liskeard, Cornwall. Elizabeth married John Brandram Turnbull, on 10 June 1938, Croydon. I am fairly certain that John Brandram Turnbull died aged 43 in 1953 in Croydon. Elizabeth herself died on 1 Jan 1995 at 187 Ballards Way, Croydon
More detail can be found at

I would love to know a bit more about Elizabeth Hendry and Andrew Anderson e.g. was there actually any other children, what exactly was Andrew doing in India and how long was he and his family out there, am I correct in my identification of his parentage....... I hope somebody out there recognises these names and can help me fill in the gaps.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Electoral rolls in Croydon Local Studies
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 12:31 BST (UK)  »
Would anybody visiting the local studies in Croydon library in the next few weeks be willing to do a quick scan through the electoral rolls 1931 back a few a years for a family at a particular address. I haven't got the address yet but I similar exercise at the beginning of this week involved 7 hours driving for half an hours work and I would like to try and avoid this once I have the address from a marriage cert. (Agnes Jean Helen Anderson marrying Leo Jones 1931) which I hope to have early next week.
All the best
John Hendry
