Galway / Another name for Luke perhaps?
« on: Wednesday 30 May 12 20:09 BST (UK)  »
My Co Mayo ancestors followed the usual child naming process - very helpful.

My Co Galway ancestors, not so much!  From my GGs (John Farrell m. Mary Roche) death cert. I know my GGGs were Luke Farrell and Ellen Doyle.  I have not found one single Luke in the 4 generations since.

Was there a notable nickname for Luke?   It just seem so strange there haven't even been any middle names of Luke, including all of John's childrens families.  Seems very odd as our John's children ALL have plenty of John's and Mary's AND several names from Mary's Roche side of the family......NO Lukes anywhere to be seen.  Any ideas?

« on: Thursday 10 May 12 12:37 BST (UK)  »
Blimey! I found them!!!  At 12:45 last night I was standing in front of my computer doing the dance of joy!  MayoAncestors.com (after buying credits to look at a couple of records) paid off BIG TIME!  But they do not seem to have any help decyphering their results.

I found my GGGGs thru 2 baptism records of their youngest children born in Ireland!!! I need help understanding all the different location names tho.

Name - Bridget Roach (Wm and Anne McAndrews are parents, my GGGG!!!!)
Denom - Roman Catholic
Address - Coolcronane
Parish - Backs/Knockmore
Region - North Mayo

Can you explain what/where Coolcronane is/was?  Also, I was told the family came from Ballina - is Knockmore in Ballina?

Galway / Farrells of Co Galway - Luke and Ellen
« on: Friday 04 May 12 19:07 BST (UK)  »
My GGG John Thomas Farrell's (~1847 - 1930) death cert says he immigrated from Co Galway.  Census' say around 1853.  He settled in Baltimore, Maryland, married Mary Roche in 1866 and had 7 children.

His parents were Luke and Ellen Doyle Farrell.  I was unable to find any Luke Farrell in Griffiths from Co Galway.

Family lure says 3 brothers came over, Luke, Garrett and our John but I have not been able to confirm that or find the other brothers for certain.  Nothing was ever said about Luke and Ellen immigrating except on notation I found on a handwritten lineage done by a distant relative that said "Luke Farrell ~1853 Red Bank, NJ and I don't know if that was my GGGG or one of the supposed brothers.

Any advise on where to look next for Luke and Ellen in Co Galway would be greatly appreciated.

Galway / Farrell - Galway haystack!

Looking for hints of where to look for my Farrell roots. I know John Farrell was born in Co Galway(dob 1947) and married Mary Roche of Co Mayo in May, 1866 in Maryland, USA after emigrating in the states in 1855.

Have not been able to find his birth or baptism records and need a hint as to where to look.  I had no idea Co Galway searches would be so daunting! I paid for ancestry.com which was very helpful tracing my Farrels here but that doesn't seem to help much now that I have traced back to Ireland.

Do you think it would be worth it to buy into ancestery.com.uk?
