Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Decipher name please
« on: Monday 22 August 22 23:08 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help decipher the name please? It’s from a landscape painting from my mum’s house. She sadly passed away last year. I’m certain she was gifted the painting by a local amateur artist and if they’re still alive I’d love to try and get in touch with them but I’m struggling to work out their name.

Lanarkshire / Hospital in Wishaw 1901*COMPLETED*
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 13:58 BST (UK)  »
I've got very little SP credits remaining so rather than downloading original census I was wondering if anyone can help?

On the 1901 census transcription I'm looking at, my ancestor is a nurse at a hospital in Wishaw, the address is Hospital Duiesdale.  I've tried googling this to find out more information about it but I've not been successful.

Anyone heard of it?  I'm wondering if it's been transcribed wrongly  :-\

Lanarkshire / problems finding 1901 census *COMPLETED*
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone help?

I'm trying to locate a 1901 census for a family on SP but I'm having no luck whatsoever  :(

It's been transcribed on Ancestry, it all ties up with previous census entries and family members etc. just can't find them on SP.

They are supposed to be living in Bellshill, address Waddell's Land Main St.  Reg no 625/3 and ED no 11.  Names are as follows

James Holmes (56)
Margaret Holmes (45)
Janet Holmes (15)  daughter
William Holmes (10) son
Alex Holmes (9) son
John Ferguson (4) grandson
Alex Mcgarrity (39) boarder
Mary Mcgarrity (43) boarder

I've tried searching the forenames only and matching them up with likely search results which show GROS data containing 625/3 011 but I'm still not having any success.

Does anyone have any ideas which might help me please before I go and blow all my monthly SP credits?

Thanks
Jo

United States of America / Mabel F Bussman - Michigan
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find the death of Mabel Bussman nee Bell.

She was born abt 1895 in Pennsylvania, parents were John Baird Bell and Jane/Jennie Fowler, both born in Scotland.

Mabel married John Henry Bussman about 1915.

They moved to Michigan and can be found in 1930 living in St Clair Shores, Macomb County.

John died in 1970 in Alma, Gratiot County, but I have been unable to discover anything about Mabel's death or whether they had any children.

Can anyone help?

There are portraits of former Provosts/Lord Provosts in the Council Chambers Suite, does anybody know if members of the public are permitted to take photographs of them?

World War Two / No entry on CWGC
« on: Monday 30 May 11 14:58 BST (UK)  »
My mother was told her uncle Horace died during WW2 at sea.  The story is he was in the Navy (uncertain whether Merchant or Royal) and his ship was hit.

I've looked at all the entries on the CGWC for a Horace Smith, but can't find anything appropriate.  He was born 1908 in Earlestown, Lancashire, parents Henderay and Mary Ellen Smith.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Canada / Great Uncle Norman
« on: Monday 30 May 11 14:54 BST (UK)  »
I don't know where to start  :-\

My great uncle Norman Smith was born in 1904 in Earlestown, Lancashire,  parents Henderay and Mary Ellen (nee Wild) Smith.  They moved from there to Manchester at some point.

My mother thinks he married a 'Margaret'  ::)   They had a son, Alan.

They moved to Canada, no idea where about and the only info I have is that Alan apparently won some Mr Universe/body building type competition which Norman proudly wrote about in a letter once.  My mother thinks Alan was born early 1930s, but we can't be certain.

I'm trying to track down Norman, find out where he settled and when he died.  Think they left for Canada in the late 50s/60s.

Any suggestions where to start would be much appreciated.

Another one in a bit of a mess...  Norman worked on the buses in Manchester, this is him in his uniform.  If it could be cleaned up that would be great.
