Dublin / Misses Charlotte & Harriett DOWNES
« on: Saturday 18 July 15 14:36 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my DOWNES family, William (a gardener) and Mary Downes (née Quigley, born in Athy), who married in Booterstown, presumably where Mary was then based.

They then lived in Clontarf and Killester, from at least 1824 to at least 1840, according to birth records of the 7 children. The youngest, my great-grandfather Thomas was born in Black Quarry, Several of his sisters were born in Seafield Avenue. Killester was the address given for one of the sons who died in 1840. All indications suggest the family was RC. There were a few Downes in north Dublin at the time and I wonder whether my William was connected to them. The whole family decamped at some point to Athavallie, Mayo, where Wm & Mary are buried. One of Thomas's children was born in Cloghran.

Over the years, the same Downes names have kept appearing in connection with Clontarf, especially the Misses Charlotte and Harriett Downes. Charlotte seems to have owned 15, The Crescent in 1848 (and was Abraham Stoker Sr’s landlady), and Harriett owned or let properties in Killester between 1847 and 1854. Between them, they seem to have inhabited and/or let out various north Dublin houses.

I have found no BMD or will records for these 2 ladies, nor have I been able to find property records apart from the Griffith’s entries. They may have been absentee landladies, but research in UK registers hasn’t turned up anything either. At a guess, I’d expect the Misses Downes to have been COI.

I’d like to eliminate them from my research, but don’t know where to go from here.

Dublin / CLONTARF BMD records
« on: Friday 17 July 15 14:50 BST (UK)  »
I’m very disappointed that the Clontarf records are not among the microfilms released by the NLI. I’ve been told however that there is a transcription of Clontarf’s registers but I’ve yet to find any reference to such document.

Is there any way of checking pre-1800 records for that parish? RC mainly but I’d also like to check the COI records just in case.

Very grateful for any pointers!

Dublin / Downes family of Dublin

We're now on line with as much of our Downes info as we've been able to verify. If anyone recognises any of the names therein, I'd love to hear from you!

Dublin / 1966ish probate, Dublin
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 11:00 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having great difficulty in finding out where a Dublin will proved (probably) in 1966 or 1967 would be filed. Neither the Probate Office nor the National Archives seems to be right, unless I've missed something.

Could someone point me in the right direction please?

Dublin / 35 Cavan Street Dublin
« on: Monday 02 January 12 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a 1817 Pro-Cathedral baptism record in which this address is given, but I can't find any reference to the street's location (north, south, etc.).

Can anyone help please?

Ireland / Minimum age for baptismal sponsors
« on: Thursday 15 December 11 07:37 GMT (UK)  »
I've searched, but I cannot find. Does anyone know what the minimum age for RC baptismal sponsors was in the 18th & 19th centuries?

Dublin / What was a shoe broker?
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
I can make an uneducated guess, but does anyone have any specific information?
I've found Robert Lacy (possible gggfather) listed in the Dublin City Directory 1850 at 58 Golden lane (shoe broker).

Also was there any residential directory at this time? The Robert (de) Lacy I've been researching is supposed to have lived in Malahide.

Dublin / O'Brien's Place, Pembroke West
« on: Thursday 14 October 10 08:18 BST (UK)  »
I found my great-grandfather in the 1911 Census living at this address, but I haven't been able to find its location.

Does anyone know whether O'Brien's Place still exists, or what its current name is?

Thanks in advance.

Dublin / Research in Dublin
« on: Wednesday 29 September 10 15:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm coming to Dublin on Friday for a week. Apart from visiting family and having a whale of a time, I should have 3 days available for research (all I can spare).

I've downloaded the Reader's Ticket application for NAI. Is it realistic tyo expect access to some 17C Land Commission records? Or wholly unreasonable?

If I manage to source BMD parish records, will I be allowed to buy copies?

Thanks in advance for any hints/pointers!
