Canada Lookup Request / William & Christina Halliday in Manitoba, Canada 1901 & 1911
« on: Monday 18 February 08 03:54 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out if William & Christina Halliday both born in Scotland are the same ones that lived in Manitoba, Canada in 1901 & 1911

William Halliday was born  Hutton, Dumfriesshire on 26 Feb 1850.
His wife Christina was born c1857 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire.

The 1911 Canada census appears to show an arrival year in Canada, which may help me confirm if this is the same couple, but I don't have access to that..

If anyone could help, I would be grateful.

Australia / Madeline & Alice M Common travel UK to Sydney 1913 & 1927
« on: Saturday 02 February 08 05:47 GMT (UK)  »
Was it commonplace for young children to travel alone to Australia back in about 1913 ?

I have found the following travel data index information:

1913 Madeline COMMON aged 12 (dob c1901) travelled from Liverpool to Sydney

1927 Alice M COMMON aged 57 (dob c1870) travelled London to Sydney, Australia

They were together in England in 1901, (mother and daughter), and I have found them together again in the 1930 Australian Electoral Roll in Sydney.  The husband/father died in 1915.

Do the full travel records show if they did travel with someone else ?  The indexes appear to show no one with them on the same trip for each relevant year.

Thanks

I am not sure if anyone can help, but I am trying to locate the exact address for the family of Chorlton's living in King Street, Dukinfield, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire in 1851.

I have the family as:
c1788 Henry
c1818 Phebe
c1829 Henry
c1837 Sarah

Also, anything that may confirm the parentage of Sarah shown as a granddaughter.

Henrys wife was Ann, but she appears to have died in 1850 (recorded with the spelling Charlton)

Roxburghshire / Parish Records Hounam or Hownam, Roxburghshire
« on: Thursday 11 October 07 03:39 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm if an Andrew COMMON married Agnes Sharp on 23rd May 1749 at Hownam, Roxburghshire.

And then if Richard COMMON was born or baptised on 31 Jan 1757, as one of their children.

If anyone was able to confirm this, I would be grateful.

« on: Wednesday 03 October 07 07:53 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with this one.

On Ancestry I have had a hint come up saying:
Biography & Genealogy Master Index (BGMI)
Reference & Finding Aids
Woops! We don't have a preview for this yet, but there's a lot to see once you sign up.
Sign Up Now
Name:  John Walford Common
Birth:  year

It seems I would need to upgrade to a World Deluxe membership to see the result!

The John Walford Common in my tree was born about 1913.

Does anyone know what the Biography & Genealogy Master Index is?

Thanks

I have seen a "D Joyce Parker Common" in the New York Passenger List indexes 1820-1957, as having left Liverpool for New York at some time.

I am looking up Joyce Parker Common born 1892 and this one may be linked.

Could someone please let me know the details of this, if possible.

Thanks

Lancashire / Rochdale and Ashton under Lyne
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 08:52 BST (UK)  »
As far as I have been aware, Rochdale and Ashton under Lyne are separate registration Districts.  However, I have just followed a marriage that appears to have happend in both districts.

In 1838 I have Elizabeth CHORLTON marrying John HUTHWAITE in Middleton, St Leonard, Rochdale District ref: CE20/1/187 from Lancashire BMD

But I also see this marriage in FREEBMD at:
Marriages Jun 1838 at  Ashton &c.  (an alternative name for Ashton under Lyne ) 20 Ref:/27
Elizabeth  CHORLTON   & John HUTHWAITE

Can anyone shed any light on why this may be.

Thanks

United States of America / Baltimore Passenger Lists Look up
« on: Tuesday 11 September 07 05:51 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather, Arthur W Common b1851, is not on the UK 1861 census record.

I have now located an index record of a Arthur W Common on the Baltimore Passenger Lists, 1820-1948

Departing from:  Liverpool, England and travelling to Baltimore, Maryland.

Could someone check what year that event was for me please ?

This might help in working out where he was in 1861.  He was back in Halifax, Yorkshire in 1871.

His father helped to set up a UK Building Society, (Halifax Equitable), so financially he would probably have been able to afford such a trip.

Thanks for the help.
