The Common Room / Starting from scratch
« on: Sunday 19 February 23 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I started researching my family tree in 2008 at the age of 15. As you can expect I did all the usual stupid things and by 2014 I realised that my tree was so full of errors and mistakes and guesses that cleaning it up would be laborious and more work than fun. So I made the decision to start from scratch and start a new file (at this point I was 21).

Now I am almost 30, and I am looking at my tree (22k individuals) with a similar feeling to that which I had in 2014. I have noticed various errors and mistakes that I made in my early 20's and before I refined my research abilities to the level they are at today. There are facts which I have recorded that I have no idea where I got them from and I'm frustrated with myself for not making the effort to record that information. It's not horrendous, but I just feel like if I started today I could build a cleaner and more well referenced tree than the one I started nine years ago.

Yes, I'm tempted to start from scratch again.

Just wondered whether anyone else has ever done similar, and regretted it? Or perhaps did so and realised it was a good decision? I am 50/50 whether to start again, or put the work in and go person by person, branch by branch, and do a full scale clean up.

Northumberland / Laura White (1897-2003)
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 11:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I am still looking into the oldest people from the North East, you guys helped me out a lot last month with a particularly elusive centenarian - https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=841423.0

I have a similar problem again with another individual. Laura White died on 27 Dec 2003 of a chest infection at Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear, aged 106. Her usual residence was Allen Court Nursing Home, Benwell, and her death certificate states she was born on 5 March 1897. She is listed as a widow but gives no maiden name or name of any husband. The informant appears to be a care home worker.

I am drawing a blank on all ends with this one. I have tried looking for marriage records for women called Laura marrying a Mr White, but none of them lead to anything. I have tried looking at Scottish records, but there was nothing turning up there either. Apart from her death certificate, Laura White just doesn't seem to exist.

If anyone if up for a challenge, it would be a huge help to me if we could find out more about this woman's life.

Thanks

Jack

Northumberland / Kathleen Marion Mossman (1895-2002)
« on: Friday 11 December 20 20:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Bit of a side project of mine I am looking into the oldest people from the North East region.

Kathleen Marion Mossman died on 31 Aug 2002 at Woodlands Care Home, Wideopen, North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, aged 107. Her death was not registered until 1 Nov 2002 as she died following what was apparently a fall, so an inquest was held on 30 Oct 2002 (accidental death).

I am trying to find information about where she was originally from. Her death certificate leaves her maiden name and place of birth blank, but states she was born on 10 Jan 1895.

I have found her in 1939 in Gateshead, Co Durham, married to Alexander Mossman, but cannot go back any further. I am usually quite good at tracing people so am stumped as to why I'm drawing a blank on her, I cannot find a corresponding marriage or birth record.

If anyone could help me find out any more I would be very grateful!

Technical Help / FTM 2019 - Sync not working since January 2020
« on: Thursday 27 August 20 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I don't know whether anyone else has had this issue, but on my Family Tree Maker 2019 the Sync function has not worked properly since January 2020.

I have managed to partially sync every now and then so my Ancestry tree is staying reasonably up to date, but for the past month whenever I try and Sync it just crashes and I have to reset everything.

I have tried compacting the file and it reduces the file size, but it still crashes when trying to Sync.

Anyone else having similar issue, or know how to fix this?

Thanks

Jack

Hello,

Everyone knows the feeling of having many (tens of thousands in my case) DNA matches that you simply cannot place anywhere in your tree.

On Ancestry DNA, it would be very useful to be able to see if there are any common ancestors that appear in more than just one tree within your DNA matches list, but not your own. I am not aware of any way of discovering this, apart from say manually going through every single one (not feasible).

Does anyone else know what I mean? If so does anyone know a way of doing this, or a work around perhaps?

Thanks

Jack

Durham / Ancestry DNA Match - Can't figure out the link
« on: Thursday 30 July 20 10:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have two seperate DNA matches linking me to a Joseph LIDDLE (1753-1833), native of Stockton, late of Sunderland.

It is probably best explained if I attach the graph (below)

So there does appear to be a definite link to Joseph as I am linked to two of his descendants through two of his different children, Joseph (b. 1789) and Jane (b. 1799). Ancestry suggests that the link is through my ancestor Mary LIDDLE, who I have as being born abt. 1799, marrying Matthew Heel in Newcastle in 1818.

Now that seemed plausible to me, so I looked into it further.

It turns out Joseph Liddle (b 1753) and his wife Jane Milburn had several children born in Sunderland -

Joseph, b. 1789
Mary, b. 1791, d. bef. 1797
Thomas, b. 1795
Mary, b. 1797, d. 1800
Jane Milburn, b. 1799

The problem is obvious. Joseph did have a daughter called Mary (two in fact), but both died young. So it is not possible for either one to be my Mary who was alive and getting married in 1818. But I am definitely linked to Joseph! But there is nowhere else in my tree that would make sense. Is it possible he had another daughter called Mary who wasn't recorded, or am I missing something here?

I love looking through DNA matches but I am still a novice when it comes to working out how to resolve issues where the science conflicts with the paper trail!

Thanks

Jack

The Common Room / Possible confusion with accents, early 19th Century
« on: Sunday 05 January 20 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have been searching for the death of my ancestor James Downey for many years.

I knew he was born in Darlington, Durham in 1783, married in South Shields, Durham in 1804 where he is listed as a 'soldier'. His wife Ann remarries in 1816 listed as a 'widow', so I knew he died sometime between the birth of his only child Thomas in 1805 and Ann's remarriage in 1816.

There are absolutely no burial records matching his description in the North of England at all, and I couldn't find anything in any military searches.

However, today I stumbled across this burial record from Sheppey, Kent:

1st May 1811 - James Downie, a Scotch Soldier, age 28

The name matches, the age matches and the occupation matches. But he is buried in Kent, and described as Scotch, which he absolutely wasn't. His parents weren't Scottish either. I am wondering whether it is possible that people in Kent at this time may have confused a North East England accent with a Scottish one. Why he was stationed in Kent I'm not sure.

Does anyone think it is possible that these accents could have been mixed up? Could this be my James?

Thanks!

The Lighter Side / How many Ancestors do you have?
« on: Sunday 24 November 19 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
The wording of the thread title is perhaps misleading. It is absolutely not possible to know how many ancestors we all have!

What I mean is, how many ancestors have you identified to date?

I currently have 808 ancestors that I have discovered. I keep worrying I've found as many as possible but others always show up somehow or another!

Paternal Grandfathers line - 309 ancestors
Paternal Grandmothers line - 180 ancestors
Maternal Grandfathers line - 129 ancestors
Maternal Grandmothers line - 190 ancestors

Occupation Interests / "Panyerman"
« on: Wednesday 10 April 19 09:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I came across this description in a 1607 baptism record in County Durham. I have no idea what it means and Google hasn't been particularly helpful!

The baptism states: "25 Nov 1607 Dorothy Craw, of Stranton, daughter of John Craw (panyerman)"

Has anyone come across anything similar, and know what it means?

Thanks

Jack
