« on: Tuesday 14 August 12 15:54 BST (UK)  »
Dear All,

Would anyone be able to help me with the actual memorial inscription for the following 2 graves at Sheffield General Cemetery?  (If they are still there and legible)

Grave H2 154
Should be James Vickers Stacey, John Vickers Stacey & Ann Stacey (Gill & Moore also there)

Grave H3 154 (I'm hoping this is next to the above)
Should be Caroline Stacey and Ramsdens.

Thank you so much

Kindest Regards
Debbie (Nee Stacey)

United States of America / 1900 & 1910 US census Look up for name COWES
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone have access to the 1900 and/or 1910 us census records - Massachusettes probably.

I am trying to find the following:
Harry Cowes (Born 1895) Pontefract Yorkshire
William Cowes (Born 1889) Don't know where - I have his DOB from his WW1 enlistment record
Amy Cowes (Born 1885-1895) again, no birth located in the UK for her,

Their Mother is Jane (Probably COWES)
Father is Emmanuel COWES.

(Harry's marriage in 1923 at Kippax church lists his father as Emmanuel Cowes deceased).

Oral family history says they never married BUT Jane does marry in 1916 to someone else and is listed as  JANE COWES on the marriage record plus her 3 children all have the surname COWES.

I know for definite that Harry and William die in the UK - I have located death records for them.

Amy marries Martin J Kenny in 1914 and oral family history say they emigrated to the USA but no one knows where.

I have been unable to locate ANY UK census records 1891/1901/1911 for Jane or the children and I am wondering if perhaps it was Emmanuel with the US connection?

I have located a 1911c for an Emmanuel Cowes who states he was born in Devon (UK) in 1856 and is single - it IS possible this could be him. I have no BMD for him so cannot be sure.

Many thanks for any help at all with this one - it's proving a real mystery

Kind regards - Debbie

(I know I could solve some some of this with certificates but it is too costly at the moment)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Is there an on-line electoral roll for 1935?
« on: Friday 02 March 12 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Would anyone know if I can access an on-line electoral roll for Glasshoughton, Castleford for 1935?
I don't live in Yorkshire so it isn't possible to visit the library.

Is there a pay-per-view? I have never looked up electoral rolls before so don't know how much information they give. - one website wanted £50.00!

I know the name and address but just wanted to check who else was in the house.

Many thanks
Debbie

Lancashire / Southport trade directory for 1920-1930's
« on: Wednesday 29 February 12 19:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Does anyone have access to a trade directory that covers Southport for around 1930's?

I am looking for an Anne Wilson who ran a boarding house. I think she would have been a widow.

I have her on 1911 census in Garforth (Yorkshire) and we know she was back in Garforth in 1949. We believe she re-married around 1943 (ish) but date/place still to be confirmed but family oral history says she made her money from the Guest House she ran in Southport prior to returning to Yorkshire.

Any help much appreciated.

She was born in Garforth in 1877 as Annie Dickinson and married George Wilson in 1898 and they had 1 son - Herbert Dickinson born 1896.

Many thanks - Debbie

United States of America / John Smith ! Born at Sea 1923, US Airforce
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 16:02 BST (UK)  »
Dear All

I am trying to locate the burial place, date and cause of death of my Mum's cousin
John Reginald Smith.
His parents John Robert Smith and Rose Ethel Smith left the UK on board the Regina in 1923.
Their son, John Reginald was born on that journey.
(I have a copy of the 1930 us census and a copy of the marine births so the above info ties up).
The family lived in Flint, Genessee, Michigan where John Robert worked at the Auto factory.

My Mum believes that John Reginald (the son) was a Colonel in the US Air Force and drowned in a freak swimming accident (possibly in the 60's), though I may have found his death details as 1971 according to family search.org. My Mum also thinks he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honours as she vaguely remembers another cousin sending her a newspaper cutting which she can no longer find.

Are there any on-line newspapers I can search for his death (probably happened in Flint) ? Can I get a copy of his death certificate? and is there any way I can find out if he was buried a ANC ?

All help very much appreciated.

One of his John Jnrs other sisters - Hilda (married Willmot Speck) and joined the Salvation army in 1945 and by 1956 she had become a director of social services. Hilda died in 2005.

Many thanks - Debbie

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Long Shot ! Sheffield. Vickers-Stacey
« on: Friday 07 March 08 19:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Would anyone know of any books or publications I can look at to connect my "Stacey" family to the "Vickers" family of Sheffield.

My 4 x Gt Grandfather was John Vickers Stacey b abt 1795 Ecclesall Bierlow. He was married to Caroline (No surname for her).
1841 he was listed as a metal smith, 1851 a bookmaker and 1861 he was a former manufacturer.
I have looked at some trade directories but didn't find John and have no idea what he may have manufactured (if he did).

One of their sons was James Vickers Stacey b 1823 and married Ann Lockwood 1841.
This James Vickers Stacey was NOT the Britannia Metal manufacturer
though they were only born 5 years apart and similar area.

I am trying to trace where Vickers appears in the Stacey line as it continues all the way through to my Grandad but we don't know where it came from.

I would also like to try and track a connection to the "Other" Vickers-Stacey family.

I know it's a long-shot but the name might trigger a memory from a book someone may have read or an article.

I haven't tracked any Stacey graves in Sheffield either - not sure where to start and I would also like to try and find a marriage record for John and Caroline (1815 - 1820 apx they married).

Any pointers in the right direction would be gratefully accepted - please.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this - Thankyou - Debbie

Can anyone help?

I have 2 sisters :
Ann McGarry born Co. Roscommon 1825
Catherine McGarry born same place 1829

I have tracked them from 1841-1871 inclusive. All appears normal.

When I reach the 1881 c - RG11/4039 folio 129 page 14
They are living at 65 Dale Street, Ashton-U-Lyne
Ann is 48yrs - Catherine is 45yrs - both listed as born AUL

By 1891 - RG12/3279 -folio 113/page 13
They are still living at 65 Dale Street AUL
Ann is now only 44yrs and Catherine is only 43yrs - both born Ireland !!
Ages are abt 20yrs out.

I have never come across such a difference before and wondered if this is normal and an
enumerators error of both census records or incorrect info given on census night.

I believe it's too much of a coincidence for the sisters in 1891 NOT to be the same ones
as the 1881.

By 1901 - Ann is living with her nephew (all her details are correct)
and no sign of Catherine and cannot locate a death with an almost correct age.

Has any one else had a similar puzzle?

Many thanks - Debbie
