Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me decipher my grandmother's occupation in the 1921 census? She never had a "profession" as such and she was working just up to before she got married that year. You can see below she is the yellow highlighted person. The census transcriber had her occupation as "Fortball Cl??"  I think it's "food hall" something. Under "nature of work", pastry something? (I don't expect to ever figure that one out). I'd appreciate it if anyone wanted to give it a try.

Yes, I know, my grandparents may not have been married; they were from strict Québecois Roman Catholic families and subsequently had seven children, but they could have dodged the clergy/notaries, although I doubt it.

My grandparents, Marie-Rose Mailloux (b. 1896, Coaticook, QC) and A(l)lan Victor McCann (b. 1886, Quyon, Wolf Lake, QC) were married in 1921. I had always assumed they married in Guelph, ON, since that is where they raised their family, but I recently dicovered that they were telling the government of Canada that they were married in Montréal.

This is a clip from their son's WWII service records, in which they state they were married July 13, 1921, in Montréal.

Now, no Drouin enquiries I've made can give me any lead. All marriages in Québec at this time needed to be registered by the clergy. Could anyone give me an idea of where I should look next? I'm heading to Montréal this summer so I can go searching. I'm not expecting anyone to do my legwork here, I am just at a loss and need to know where to look next. Unless, of course, my mother was a bastard, and I'm barking up a nonexistant tree.

In a previous query I was looking for my gggrandmother Rose Jane Leveley in Somerville Twsp, in Ontario, and I found out a lot of interesting facts through some wonderful researchers here.

Now I'm looking for information two generations further back, specifically John Lattimer/Lattimore (c. 1816 - 1880) and his wife Sarah Anne Dillon (c. 1819 - 1904). I have a record of John and his family in the 1871 census of North Victoria, Ontario, but nothing earlier. It states that he he was born in "O" (Ontario, I assume) and for origin, it first had "Canadian", then unknown, then a ditto mark after that, so your guess is as good as mine.

I have a photograph of his grave sent to me by a distant relative of John's grave that says he died 25 Aug, 1880, but we don't know where. Birth year is a guess by the census reckoning. I haven't been able to track anything further (birth, marriage, death record). If anyone can give us some help, it would be most appreciated.

I have had invaluable help from this board before, and I was hoping I could call on you once again. I have my ggrandmother's birth record, and I need a little help with the handwriting. Here is what I have so far. The question marks are indicating what is baffling me:

Ann Roden  1865  February 3rd  1hr 1 M (this generally the birth time, though this detail is awfully precise?)

26 St--?   Mercy's Wynd (?)

Parents - John Roden Shoemaker (Journeyman)/Ann Roden (maiden name) Murray
Married - 1860 (?) February 13th/ South Shiels (?)

The rest is just the Registrar's info.

I'd love to know the place of her birth and where and when my gggrandparents were married. I thank you for any insights.

Hello. I have a photocopy of a very old, very illegible Drouin birth register from 1788. I'm usually quite good at deciphering these things, but the curé must have been half-blind! If I give some information perhaps someone could help things along. These are the facts as I know them:

Name: Louis Hamel
Born: August 17, 1788
Birthplace: St. Antoine de Tilly, Lotbiniere, Québec
Parents: Louis-Alexis Hamel, Marie-Louise Bergeron
