I took a wee break from John Stewart Shoemaker of Thornhill because it was "doing my head in".
See if any of you can figure this out:-

In 1773 a master shoemaker James or Jas 'Campbell' died. There's two sources for that info only one has the surname. There's no Will or Testament Davit that I can find. So no idea who the business passed onto at that time, but most likely John Stewart also a shoemaker. In 1816 James STEWART son of John Stewart and Isobel Dog is the tanner and shoemaker. Later valuation records confirm the family retained the tenancy right up until post WW1.

My Q is how could a STEWART become a CAMPBELL heir/descendant within a generation without a will or testament davit? Anyone?

Does anyone have access to the above CD? I'm trying to verify my (short) transciption.

I took my copy to the local library and was too rushed to double check I'd correctly transcribed the info as they were closing. It's Saturday now and they aren't open till Monday.  :'(

The transcription was from Norrieston Churchyard Kincardine and as I've written it is

"the later addition by the Minister to the MIs for Norrieston regarding stones removed by the Council in 1929/39 one in particular stood out. Re item 138 - "1773 Jas was a Tanner where Mr Sands shop is now. He made shoes and sent them abroad. He was an ancestor of the Stewarts and Morrisons. grannies gfa and gmo" Mrs Morrison"

Q: Have I missed a surname, or was there none?

Devon / Missing NORMAN births Plymouth
« on: Saturday 24 January 15 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please?  I'm trying to get the names of all my gt grandparents children (I believe 13 or 15 in total)  :o

Charles Norman and Charlotte Lang mar 1888 Plymouth.

I believe there may have been several twin births and one set of triplets (poor woman she was tiny well under 5 foot) though few survived to adult.

The triplets Florence, Mabel and Violet were born and died within weeks in 1902.

So far I only have 10 children that I am sure about including the above triplets and

Eliza Warren 1890-1890
Charles Henry 1891
Charlotte Daisy 1893 - 1975 (my grandmother a twin)
Lily May 1893 - 1985 (verbally given dod but as she's not on 1901 census perhaps she died & there was another later Lily M? Signatory on mother death cert 1954 LM Smith daughter)
Eliza Warren 1896 - 1896
Eliza Warren 1897 - 1897
George James 1900 (believed to have died WW1)

Grateful if anyone can trace the rest of her lost babies, thanks.  :)

For information purposes:

1891 census shows only the parents

1901 census shows

The Common Room / Baby Farmers Victorian baby killers
« on: Thursday 22 January 15 09:52 GMT (UK)  »
My interest was piqued when I saw a BBC article about Jessie King the Scottish womam hanged for murder of her charges.

Then I read this http://www.capitalpunishmentuk.org/babyfarm.html seems we had 8 hanged in UK. 6 in England, 1 each in Wales and Scotland.

I came across this subject before whilst doing my NZ research and I suspect every country had them, have we done a thread on this subject?

Are any of us related to the victims or perpetrators?  :o

Antrim / Nephew Forsythe
« on: Friday 02 January 15 14:38 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1901 census for Ballyalbanagh I have this entry which has me stumped regarding William's relationship to head of house.

Residents of a house 13 in Ballyalbanagh (Ballycor, Antrim)
1901 Residents of a house 13 in Ballyalbanagh (Ballycor, Antrim)

Moore Mary Ann 80 Female Head of Family   Presbyterian   Co Antrim   Farmer
Moore Annie 50    Female Daughter   Presbyterian   Co Antrim (illegitimate dau of Mary Ann)
Forsythe William 25   Male   Nephew      Presbyterian   Co Antrim   Farm Labourer
none are married
(as far as I know only Mary Ann's sibling Agnes (Nancy) married a Forsythe, William Forsythe in 1844 Ballyeaston  - my line)

On census 1911 Residents of a house 57 in Ballyalbanagh (Ballycor, Antrim) William has married and Mary Ann is dec'd (no sign of dau Annie) Revision Books to 1929 only show "Reps of Robert Moore" despite Robert Moore's death in 1883.

Forsythe William John 36 Male Head of Family   Presbyterian Co Antrim Farmer Married   7   3   3
Forsythe Maggie      36 Female   Wife      Presbyterian   Co Antrim   Married   -   7   3   3
Moore Forsythe Robert      6   Male   Son      Presbyterian   Co Antrim Farmers Son
Lennon Forsythe   Elizabeth Jane   5   Female   Daughter   Presbyterian   Co Antrim
Moore Forsythe    Mary Anne   1   Female   Daughter   Presbyterian   Co Antrim

Marriage No 19 Ballynure (Newtonabbey reg dist)
27 nov 1903
William Forsythe (farmer) bachelor
Maggie Lennon spinster
both full age
addresses
Ballyalbana
Ballygowan
fathers
William Forsythe (farmer)
Robert Lennon (farmer)
Ballynure Pres Church by license
minister William Kerr
witnesses Sarah A Lennon
William Hugh Wilson

Margaret's birth details tie in with the children's names
Name:    Margaret
Gender:    Female
Christening Place:    609, BALLYNURE, ANT, IRE
Birth Date:    06 Aug 1871
Birthplace:    Ballynure, Ant, Ire
Father's Name:    Robert Lennon
Mother's Name:    Eliza Jane Baxter

But I'm struggling to make sense of William's birth, it doesn't tie in easily with any of the William Forsythes in my line and there doesn't appear to be a direct link to the name Moore.

William's birth if legitimate with father William?
This looks like a possibility because of this marriage (top)
Name:             William Forsythe
Spouse's Name:       Anna Matilda Forsythe
Event Date:          05 Nov 1866
Event Place:          Derryaghy, Ant, Ireland
Father's Name:       John Forsythe
Spouse's Father's Name:    Robert Forsythe
Marital Status:               Single
Spouse's Marital Status:    Single

Name:             William Forsythe
Gender:                  Male
Birth Date:          16 Sep 1875
Birthplace:          Antrim, Ireland
Father's Name:       William Forsythe
Mother's Name:       Matilda Forsythe

But there is another possibility with the middle name correct but no father named.
Name:    William John Forsythe
Gender:    Male
Christening Place:    BALLYNURE, ANT, IRE
Birth Date:    07 Dec 1872
Birthplace:    Ballynure, Ant, Ire
Mother's Name:    Ann Jane Forsythe (Bn 1848 Rosedermot?)

Any thoughts how I can sort out how William John was Mary Ann's nephew?

Antrim / William Forsythe & Agnes (nee Moore) deaths 1911
« on: Saturday 27 December 14 20:42 GMT (UK)  »
I can't find a census entry for the above couple in 1911 (I believe they both died within days of the census) but this looks like them in 1901 http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Cairncastle/Ballymullock/994555/

I was told by a distant relative many years ago that they lived in Kilwaughter, is the address on the census entry close to Kilwaughter?

Agnes (aka Nancy) reportedly died 6 April 1911 aged 84 of shock and exposure after falling out of bed and lying there for several days.  Would there have been an Inquest? Would her death be registered in Larne or possibly Belfast?

Her husband William Forsythe is said to have died Bray Street Belfast on 17 April 1911 aged 98 grandson Wm Blair present at his death from acute bronchitis.

They could be registered/buried in either place so I'm trying to tighten up evidence for certificates.

Thanks

Antrim / Robert Kerr m Margaret Topping 24 Oct 1851 Ballyeaston
« on: Saturday 20 December 14 14:56 GMT (UK)  »
His father was Thomas Kerr per FS.

The only child of Robert/Margaret I am certain of, is Mary Ann (bn abt 1858) who emigrated to Australia prior to 1886 (a marriage in Queensland)

I believe Robert had a brother William (my gt grandfather m Larne 1853) whose family are proving extremely difficult to trace, since the children were born before registration became compulsory.  So I'm hoping someone has information on the above Robert or his family through which I can extend my research.

Many thanks in advance.
