Cheshire / Ropemakers and Twine Manufacturers
« on: Saturday 05 January 19 03:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I reside in Australia and have been on site a few years ago but am looking for updates on some ancestral history. My great great grandfather was Thomas Harrison born in Cheshire 1842-1924 married to Mary Eliza Miller 1845. He lived in Cheshire and was listed in the 1891 census at Witton, Cheshire as a ropemaker/twine manufacturer. There doesn't seem to be any information on that profession so I know it is a vague area, but if anyone has any suggestions, directions or information, it will be gratefully appreciated. I read that there was a financial crash late 1800's that caused a change of work and move to Lancashire for my great great grandfather so the details on that work also peter out. Many Thanks. John H.

Lancashire / Quaker Family Connection
« on: Saturday 05 January 19 03:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I reside in Australia and have been on site a few years ago but I'm looking for updates please on ancestral connection to the Quakers in the 1800's through the Harrison/Hampson family history. My grandfather was Thomas Harrison 1886 and married Sarah Ann Hampson 1884. My grandmother's mother was Sarah Ann Whalley 1849 - 1928 married to John Hampson 1847 - 1912. It was suggested that Sarah Ann Whalley came from a Quaker family and I have noted that there was also an area called Whalley in Lancashire. It is a broad question and difficult to localise but if anyone has any information, I will be grateful. John H.

Lancashire / Hampson Brothers Vulcan Motor Manufacturing
« on: Tuesday 28 August 12 02:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am in Australia researching family history in Lancashire. My Grandmother's cousins were Thomas and Joseph Hampson who founded Vulcan Motor Manufacturing in Southport, Lancashire. They operated the company between 1902 and 1916. Does anyone know of any book/s that would contain photos, diagrams and detailed information about the company operation between these years of 1902 to 1916. Thank you. John.

Lancashire / Gravesite/Gravestone St. Michael Great Lever
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 11:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am in Australia currently ongoing research into family history, including the Bramhall family branch. The Lancashire Online Parish Clerk site notes two entries of great grandparents, James Bramhall and Elizabeth J. Bramhall. They are James Bramhall burial 21 July 1919, St. Michael, Great Lever, Lancashire. Age 73 years, abode 40 Bradford Ave., Bolton. Grave Row 43 No. 15, and Elizabeth J. Bramhall burial 27 March 1924, St. Michael, Great Lever, Lancashire. Age 74 years, abode 40 Bradford Ave., Bolton. Grave (also) Row 43 No. 15.
Can anyone advise me as to who to contact to see if the gravesite/gravestone exists after such a long time and if so how to obtain a photo of same.
I understand this is a difficult request and any assistance or advice will be appreciated.
John

Lancashire / Hampson family coal miners
« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 05:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello. I live in Australia and am currently researching ancestral history. At the moment, therefore, I am also looking at the coal mining industry in the 1800s. John Hampson was one of my great grandfathers. He was born in Wigan in 1847. He married Sarah Ann Whalley born 1849 also of Wigan. Census records 1871 place him at 45 Albert St., St. Helens with occupation as a coal miner. Census records 1881 place him at 71 Shuttle St., Tyldesley with Shakerley with occupation as an ironmonger continuing until retirement.  With a common surname and a common occupation it would be difficult to find further occupation details, but I was wondering if anyone has any directions to find more about the coal mines/collieries in tha area. Any suggestions will be appreciated. John

Cheshire / Weaver "Flats'
« on: Sunday 24 July 11 07:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello. This might be a needle in a haystack question. I am enquiring from Australia. Harrison Ancestors were "Flatmen" and "Watermen". With help from people on this site in canal boatmen topic area I discovered more about that they owned and or operated "Flats". I have found general and specification  details from the registry of flats, Jim Sheads Waterway site and Wikipedia. Question is to find more specific details and information about the individual flats "Polly" (definite link), "Newton" (possible link) and "Governor" (vague link), should I write to the Ellesmore Port Museum or are there any other sites that might provide clues. Thanks. JohnJean

Cheshire / St. Helen's Church Witton Burial Registers
« on: Tuesday 24 May 11 02:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello, Despite research last year and a lot of assistance from canal woman, on the rootschat website, there is no physical evidence of the following HARRISON gravesite taken from the website ST HELEN'S CHURCH, WITTON, NORTHWICH-BURIAL REGISTERS. The entry is listed as follows:
Gwen Barton Nov 21 1866 age 62
also Mary, daughter, and wife of William GARNES of
Northwich July 9 1887 age 28
Frederick william HARRISON April 19 1945 age 80
Also Catherine, wife of Frederick W, Jan 13 1951 age 83
Also James MILLER, son, April 11 1898 age 17 months
Also Fred and charles 1887 in infancy

The mystery is that Frederick and K/Catherine died in Leigh Lancashire but another contributor from this website suggests that if they are in this register thay should be buried here. Can anybody tell me who may have made the register list and where they got the information from? Thanks John.

Lancashire / Ancestral gravesite
« on: Monday 23 May 11 08:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello, This may be a long shot and probably a needle in a haystack question but I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions for the following direction. My ancestors Frederick William Harrison 1864-1945 and Katherine Harrison 1868-1951 were listed in a website for burial in Witton, Cheshire but the death references both gave the sub district of Atherton and the district of Wigan and Leigh (Leigh). They were living in Atherton Lancashire in the 1901 census and probably from then on in life. Is there any way to track down any local or district graveyard/cemetery that might have a gravestone? I live in Australia so it is an enquiry as part of my family history research.  Thanks. John.

Lancashire / Ancestry Bolton /Roby /Wigan
« on: Sunday 15 August 10 02:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I have been researching ancestry in Lancashire in the Bolton area, Huyton with Roby and Wigan. It is a long distance research from Australia. A lot of information has been obtained from ancestry websites with census, including parish record references and the family search sites. Pre 1841 still gets a little hazy and I was wondering if there are any particular parish records to access in these areas or would I need to go to family history sites? Thanks. John.
