Antrim / McAleese family from Antrim in 1860
« on: Sunday 29 July 18 11:07 BST (UK)  »
My husband is descended from the McAleese family and his grt grandfather John McAleese may have come from Dervock . - he came to Scotland and married Sarah Gallagher in Coatbridge in Lanarkshire in 1887 and both his parents were still alive in Ireland. I also think that his sister Sarah or Sally remained in Ireland and married into the Winters family - One mystery is what became of one of his sons called Patrick- we do know he was in Airdrie in the 1940s but nothing after that,
It would be brilliant if someone recognised these names - thanks in advance

Down / Scott & Doake Families 1850s/1960s
« on: Friday 27 July 18 08:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi not sure if someone can give me an answer - my family, Beresfords had been living in Dromore , Co Down and later in Kinallen - Some came over to Scotland 1860s to Springburn, Glasgow and settling in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. I know about the traditional naming conventions for children, and this family belonging to John Beresford had quite a few. They had 3 eldest boys then 2 daughters and then a son . The eldest daughter was born in 1861 called Eliza Ann Scott Doake Beresford . I don't know anything at all about the parents - John Beresford and Dorothy Beck , and that John was a soldier according to his children's Scorttish death certificates. Does anyone know anything about those families Scott or Doake and would they have been related to the Beck family ? Incidentally I've been searching for birth or death details for both parents but find nothing yet .

Lanarkshire / I'm really stuck and confused
« on: Friday 27 June 14 13:15 BST (UK)  »
any ideas why a family would change their name ? This is the RUSSELL family in New Monkland - there is more than one family and I don't think they are related ! I have Daniel Gray Russell who was illegitimate ( William Gray & Elizabeth Russell were parents) born 1829 . He seems to be registered under Gray from the details I found. When he married Isabella S Pew, he married under Gray. I found census details for the family under Russell, for 1861,1871 & 1881. I also discovered that most children they had were registered under Gray, although my grt gran, Elizabeth Gray Russell wasn't and she wasn't eldest or anything, so don't understand. When Daniel died, his death is registered under surname Russell, as are the other children.
Another problem is that the cenuses show a son called Thomas , but I can't find his birth . His dob is around 1853/4 .I did find a son called Robert Shanks Russell Gray , dob 1855, but can't find him in censuses nor can I find a death under either Gray or Russell
Can anyone else help or have ideas ? Thanks in advance

Stirlingshire / Wilson Family from Plean, St Ninians, Stirlingshire
« on: Sunday 24 November 13 20:55 GMT (UK)  »
I've been doing some work on my paternal side and discover that I can trace my tree back to a John Wilson and Janet Laird both of whom seem to come from Plean. I found John's birth in 1794, in Plean. Census records say the family came from Plean or St Ninians. My grt grt grandfather is one of his sons called James, who ended up in Airdrie, married to Mary Love. She seems to have come from the Clackmannan area originally. Funny thing I've noticed from posts here, are Wilsons who seem to have moved to Larbert from Plean area. Funny thing is that my gran called Janet Marshall came from Larbert and I have no idea how my grandfather would have met her. Just wondering if he had family up there. Also wonder if anyone can shed light on these names. I tried to find Janet Laird in Register House a couple of weeks ago without success, but will have another try next time. Just really hoping for some info ...thanks if you can help out    Elspeth

Dumfriesshire / Annan Old graveyard at Town Hall
« on: Friday 05 April 13 19:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm just back from a couple of days at Dumfries/Annan areas. I finally got to the graveyard at the back of the townhall, but couldn't find the headstone I was looking for. I went to the Museum too. and bought a booklet about the graveyard and according to it , the one I'm looking for hasn't been used as paving
Does anyone know if there is a plan of the lairs and who to contact?

Lanarkshire / Letham
« on: Friday 05 April 13 18:21 BST (UK)  »
My friend is looking for a birth of her ggg grandfather John Letham.
He married Janet Blair 1814 in Cadder and they had 3 sons. John born 1815, William born 1817 (must have died) and James born 1819.
In the 1841 census for Cadder he was aged 65 I know this census was rounded
down to nearest 5 so he could have been between 65 and 69.
The census shows he wasnt born in this county but the scoring on the census form
is so badly marked by whoever was doing the census & Janet appears to have been born
in Ireland , so i've no idea where to look
There are no details for his mother so she must have died earlier, but can't find her name at all, and as there were 3 sons, no daughters were called after her
Can anyone help out please?

Dumfriesshire / Edgar family
« on: Friday 05 April 13 14:27 BST (UK)  »
I have a Mary Edgar who married William Burnet  in 1820 in Middlebie. He was my gggg uncle. They went to Canada with their children. She died there 1861, and he died 1866 there. I'm trying to find her parents, without much success. I found a Sibella Edgar who was married to a James Burnet and wonder if the two are related at all. They seem to have stayed in Stableton and both were buried in Dornock Cemetery.Sibella was born appr 1704. and per the headstone died 1775, James died 5 July 1760 aged 85, per the headstone. I went to the Scotlands people Centre , but couldn't find any of them
Anyone got any ideas? any help would be appreciated as i'm getting to those wee brick walls and try as I might, i can't find info

Canada Lookup Request / Edgar/Burnet in Ontario
« on: Friday 05 April 13 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
In discovered that I'd relations who emigrated to Canada. One was called Mary Edgar who married William Burnet around 1820 in Middlebie, Dumfries. They emigrated to Canada with their family around 1855 , endiing up in Grey County, Ontario. I would really like to know who her parents were, which would help me with my family research, and i assume her death details would give parents, much the same as those in UK do. According to some details i found, she died 1861. Could anyone help me locate these details, please?
