The Common Room / Help with understanding family tree referencing system
« on: Friday 20 March 15 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
This morning I've been researching my Marfleet ancestors and I've found them on a website that someone has made with lots of other Marfleets. Only trouble is, I really don't know how to understand the referencing system they have used.
Here is the website link: http://www.marfleet.co.uk/john.marfleet/gen/gen(k-q).htm

And the people I am looking at are Elizabeth Marfleet born c1773, her daughter Harriet Marfleet born c1810 and then Harriets daughter, Elizabeth Jarrett born c1832. I have been finding them on the page by using the find tool in the browser (they don't seem to have a reference number I could give).

Anyway I've tried to make sense of this system by looking at the explanatory notes, but I think there are numbers missing from the people I am looking at so I don't know how to work out who Elizabeth Marfleets parents are  ???

I don't know if Harriet was illegitimate and Elizabeth wasn't married and Marfleet was her maiden name, or if she was married and I need to be looking for her Marfleet husband.

Anyway I hope that makes sense, I'm sorry if it doesn't.

The Common Room / Advice on how to find place of birth
« on: Friday 09 August 13 12:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone :)
Not sure if this is the right place to post this question, looking for a bit of advice. I've been doing my family tree for quite a few years now so i'm familiar with most things but I've started a new branch and I'm a little stuck as I don't have much to go on and the name seems very common.

My grandad was Stanley James Davies born 1922 in Grimsby, Im trying to find more information about his dad so I can go further back. His dad was also a Stanley and I ordered his marriage certificate hoping that would prove useful but its not as useful as I thought. I want to find out where he was born, will this information be on my grandads birth certificate if he was born in the year 1922?
I know from his marriage certificate that stanley snr must have been born about 1894 and his dads name was Thomas John Davies but it also lists his fathers occupation as a commercial traveler so i'm guessing this might make them hard to track using a census.
Sorry for the rambling on, I hope this makes sense and someone can offer me some advice :)
Thanks

I've tried to make the subject title quite self explanatory, but I'm wondering how I'd go about finding information about my partners Grandfather. His name was Keith Mitchell born 1923c and he was a navigator in the RAF and my partner seems to think this was in a wellington bomber. I'm thinking now due to his age and the length of training required he wouldn't have seen any action until maybe the middle of the war. I don't know if i'm correct in thinking that as I don't know much about the RAF in ww2 (or at all). He didn't speak about his time in the RAF while he was alive so I'd really love to be able to find out about what he did and any battles he was involved in during WW2. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance x

Census and Resource Discussion / Which site is best for the 1911 census?
« on: Monday 07 November 11 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I'd like to join either Genes Reunited or ancestry but ideally I'd like to have access to the 1911 census. I'm a bit confused as to what each site actually offers with regards to this and was wondering if anyone can help me out?

Also in general which site do people find best?

The Common Room / children born out of wedlock & informal adoption in 1886
« on: Friday 10 June 11 14:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone

I've just found out that my Great Great Grandma Eliza had a child 7 years before she married her husband. The child was born in 1886 when Eliza was 18 years old and it was informally adopted by Eliza's parents and was treated as the 14th of their children.

My question is basically how was this kind of situation dealt with? I know all cases are different but would it be likely the child would have known who her real mother was? And when her real mother had children once she was married is it likely they would have known.

To get an idea of the kind of family we are talking about (incase that helps) here is a link to a picture I posted yesterday

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,537579.0.html

The child who was adopted is the youngest one sat on the ground. She is also called Eliza although she was known as Fanny as that was her middle name.

Any information will be appreciated, I'd just like to get an idea of what it would have been like for my Great Great Grandma at the time and also what it would have been like for her child.

World War One / Interesting photo
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 21:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

Here is a photo of my great grandad (Percy William White b.1896) when he was in the army. I think it's the Lincolnshire regiment and it was after the first world war. Its taken in Ireland in a place called tipperary I think. I really should have wrote down the details that were on the back because I'm not sure I'm getting this right. It was taken c.1919/1920.

The quality is not good enough for anyone to have a really good look at it, but I thought it was a good photo to share with everyone. My great grandad is the one to the right of the man in the middle who looks like he's wearing an animal print waistcoat for want of a better description.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Mcgregor family - dating please :)
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Again apologies for the terrible quality. I wanted to take the photo out of the frame but I couldn't without breaking the frame so had to leave it in.

This is the Mcgregor family from Grimsby. The lady is Eliza Walsham and the man is Richard Mcgregor. The little girl at the back on the left is my great grandma Kate Mcgregor.

Could anyone give me a date for this photo or any information really.

Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Walsham Family - dating please :)
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 10:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone

Firstly I apologise for the quality of this photo. The original belongs to my grandma and as I haven't been able to borrow it to scan it, I have had to take a photo of it instead.

The photo is of the Walsham family from Lincolnshire. I believe the 2 people in the middle to be William Walsham and his Wife Rebecca Rowe. The other people are their children including my great great grandma Eliza, although as all the girls look so similar I am unsure which one she is. I think she may be the lady at the back on the right.

I would appreciate it if someone could date the photo for me. I think it must be from around 1890 because of the ages of the people in the photo.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

England / help finding information (Edward Butler)
« on: Monday 14 March 11 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone
I'm wondering if anyone can help me find information out about my 3rd Great Grandfather Edward Butler. I've tried looking before but didn't have any luck, but i've found a bit more information out now but unfortunately I only have access to free sites at the moment and i've exhausted those.
I don't have a lot to go on really. He was a fisherman so he doesn't appear on the 1881 census with the rest of his family. So I don't know his place of birth, but he moved to Grimsby, Lincolnshire sometime between 1868 and 1876. His wife and eldest daughter's birth place is Gorleston, Suffolk, according to 1881 census.
What I do know is this, his name is Edward Butler, this is definitely true, it's also on his daughter Ada's marriage certificate.
His marriage to his wife Eliza Clarke shows up on FreeBMD as taking place in Mutford March 1865.
There is a possible match in the 1881 census, a fisherman on board the 'Leader', at the time its location is Ayr (scotland I think). I checked and there was a Grimsby fishing ship called 'Leader'. But there is no place of birth written down but the year of birth is 1845 which does fit.
His wife was called Eliza Clarke (b1848) his daughters were called Alice Eliza born 1868 and Ada Mary Ann born 1876.
According to a lady I spoke to he lost touch with the rest of his family and was living away in London towards the end of his life and when he died there was a notice in the national press which his daughter saw and was given some money. Not sure about the accuracy of that story though.
There is also a possibility that his father was called William Butler and he may have had a brother called Charles. (This is completely new information to me)
Anyway, I know that's a long message and not much information to go on but if anyone could spare any time I would really appreciate any help. I'd just like to find out where he came from and who his parents and family were.
Thanks again
Hayley
