Hi,
I have a Joseph Rowell born c.1756 who married Catherine Surtees in Ryton 1782 and had 3 children. In 1794, again in Ryton, he married Barbara Thomson and had 5 children. The most common names in subsequent generations were Joseph, Samuel and Benjamin while the most common occupation was chainmaker/blacksmith. I know at least 3 of the children (as adults) moved to Scotland in the 1820's/1830's and remained there for 3 generations. I have just found an article in a 1835 Newcastle newspaper advertising the sale of a dwelling house and smith's shop at West Cottage, Winlaton, the people to contact were Joseph and Samuel Rowell. I wonder if they are selling their house before moving north.
I am interested in anyone who recognises the above names; has any theories why they would leave the north east and move 300 miles north; knows anything about the Rowell family of West Cottage which would prove/disprove my thoughts.
Any information would be most welcome.
Liz
