The Common Room / I'm so desperate for some answers!!! Please help!
« on: Thursday 05 August 10 09:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I'm tearing my hair out trying to work out who my g grandfathers parents are. I have his birth certificate, which says his mother is Emily King but I'm struggling to find her or her parents details. I wonder if someone would take a look at the certificate and see if they can spot something I can't? It also states on there that he was born in a property in London, and that the mother resided in there. But I've found absolutely no evidence to suggest that she lived there at all! It was unoccupied in 1901 when he was born!
I've no idea what my next step should be. What other records would hold information?

London and Middlesex / 62 South Molton St - Not listed :(
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 18:43 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to search for the property above, but every other house number on that street is available apart from that one. I know that either it was a shop, or there was a shop below it. But according to my g grandfathers birth certificate he was born there and his mum resided there in 1901. But I can find absolutely no record. Any ideas please?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Help Please! London 1911 Lookup
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, I've been doing the rounds to the wrinklies today and have retrieved lots of fantastic photo's and information for my family tree search. One of my more difficult ancestors is my great grandfather. I've got no hope of finding his father, but I now have his birth certificate, which states he was born in 62 South Molton Street, London, his mother Emily King was resident in 62 South Molton Street when she registered him on 19/09/1901 (we believe she was a dressmaker in the shop there). The father details say exactly James Russell Kin so is crossed out but has a (6) next to it...what does this mean?
Could someone please look to see if Emily resided in 62 South Molton St in 1911? Many Thanks :)

Somerset / Monmouth Rebellion Info please!!
« on: Monday 02 August 10 11:12 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please shed some light re the Monmouth Rebellion.
I've done a fair amount of googling, and I get the general idea of what happened and who was involved.
But, I have descendants who were originally 'Hitchcocks' (as on 1901 census) yet by 1911 they had been told to change their name to 'Duke' (according to my gran) because of the Monmouth rebellion. The 1911 census names them Hitchcock-Duke...I've noticed one of the locals who rebelled was named Hitchcock and I wonder if this has any reflection on the name change?

The Common Room / Bit of a toughie!!
« on: Saturday 31 July 10 15:37 BST (UK)  »
I've no idea where to post this as there are three different counties involved and an illigitimate child! I'm trying to track info on my great grandad.

I'm looking for information on a man called Lewis Russell King who was born in London (St George's Hanover Sq) yet on the 1911 census at the age of 9 he was boarding with the Collier family in Uplyme, Devon. He was an illigitimate child and his birth certificate has the beginnings of the fathers name which is then crossed out...first three letters are RUS...
The belief is that his mum was mistress to a 'Lord Russell' of sorts, and she had the baby but sent him away, hence him ending up in Lyme Regis.
He then met and married Eva Helen May Stephens, brought up a family in Chard, Somerset and died around 1977 in Yeovil, Somerset.
I cannot for the life of me find this man's parents details. His actual birth date is 27th Aug 1901.

Does anyone have any idea where I can look next or how to move on?!
