Limerick / Balfry Parents before 1820

Parents of Balfrys before 1820

Can anyone help by providing the names (and possibly dates) of the parents of the following Balfrys who lived in the area of Limerick, Ireland in the late 1700s and early 1800s? The name could have been spelled in any of several variants, but I will use "Balfry", Any information whether from old family records, or from oral histories will be extremely welcome.

1. William Balfry. born 1794, married Ellen Leonard in 25 April 1828, went to England and later emigrated to USA, ending in Holt, MO.
2. William Balfry, born probably between 1750 and 1760, married Mary Fitzmaurice in 1786. May have had son William b. 1780-90, who married Catherine Hickey and emigrated to Etna CA, USA.
3. George Balfry, born between 1760 and 1770, married Eleanor O'Donell. Remained in Ireland
4. William O'Mealy Balfry, born 1819, surveyor and schoolmaster, went to England, married Mary Ann Morday. Parents could have been Edmund (Ned) Balfry b, 1768 or an unidentified William.

Limerick / Balfrys in Missouri
« on: Tuesday 09 May 17 19:48 BST (UK)  »
I would like to make contact with anyone who has knowledge of the Balfry families that settled in the area of Holt Missouri, USA.
A William Balfry born 1794 near Limerick, Ireland married Ellen Leonard in 1828 then went to Lambeth, near London, England where he worked as a farm labourer. They had 7 children and returned to Limerick. In about 1850 they emigrated to USA ending up in Holt, Missouri where sons John, Thomas and William established separate families.
I would like to know how these families developed. I am also particulariy interested to know if there is any family knowledge as to the parents of William in Ireland. Although I have the record of his marriage to Ellen, the marriage is recorded as a single line in the church register with no mention of parents. Knowledge of the parents would help in fitting this branch into the wider family tree. You can see what is currently known about the Balfry diaspora at the website  www.thebalfryfamily.blogspot.co.uk. where you can also find my email address.

Just to let everyone know that a new web site dedicated to the Balfry (and variants) name has been opened at   www.thebalfryfamily.blogspot.co.uk    It contains everything that I have been able to discover about the Balfry diaspora from George (1716 to 1787) in Knockainey nr. Limerick to the present day. It covers families dispersed from Ireland to Canada, U.S.A., Australia, New Zealand, England & Wales.
You are invited to have a look and leave any comments or new information.

Other Countries / South America
« on: Saturday 02 July 16 20:01 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor who is reported in a letter dated 1924 "to have gone to South America". His name George Balfry from Limerick, Ireland. His father was a farmer. George's brother was born in 1819 so I guess George might have emigrated in the 1840 to 50s. What rescources are available to track him down? Were there any development projects attracting young Irishmen at that time? Argentinian railways or Peruvian mines come to mind. I cannot find him on passenger lists to USA in case he took the long way round. S. America seems to be something of a black hole where geneaology is concerned.
has anyone had any success on this kind of search?

Family History Beginners Board / PETHICK
« on: Monday 16 January 12 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for someone working on the Pethick Family.
I'm particularly interested in what happened to Kathleen Annie Pethick, born 1896, mother may have been Annie, father Nicholas Pearse Pethick, Wine Merchant, who may have died in London in 1897. Kathleen married Arthur Pomeroy in 1919 in Chelsea. The family may have originated in Portsmouth. After their marriage Arthur and Kathleen seem to have vanished.
Anyone following this branch of the Pethicks, please get in touch.

Limerick / Balfry family in Limerick & Cork
« on: Thursday 11 August 11 13:17 BST (UK)  »
To all those searching for Balfry (or variants) in Ireland, I have extracted about 120 names and BMD details between 1787 and 1920 from rootsireland.ie. These have been sorted by year.

Most of the records relate to  Cahairconlish, Dunvullen in Co. Limerick, and Doneraile in Co. Cork.

I have posted this list on  http://balfry-roots.wikispaces.com  where you can browse the list and add data of your own. It is by no means a complete record of the many Balfry families - but it is a start.

I hope this will become a community project with everyone helping by adding information.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Lambeth Old Workhouse, Inmate Balfry
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 10:34 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone who would be willing to consult the London Metropolitan Archives records on Lambeth Old Workhouse, Princes Rd.?

I am looking for info on William Balfry. He is listed in the 1881 Census as an inmate , aged 64, occupation Land Surveyor. I would like to know when and why he was admitted, and when he was discharged or died plus anything else that may be on record.

I have tracked down the workhouse records. They are catalogued under LABG, and possible volumes might be LABG 162/8 (1878 to 1881) and 162/9 (1881 to 1883).

Any info that anyone might dig up would be most gratefully received.
