Occupation Interests / merchant seaman with Running Fitter as occupation
« on: Sunday 10 July 22 12:28 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching one of my forebears who was a merchants seaman from his apprenticeship in 1830. I have found information about him for the period 1835 to 1846 in the Merchant Seamen Registers but in both the 1851 and 1861 census he gives his occupation as a Running Fitter. As he was elsewhere described as a Seaman, Mate and Master Mariner during the same period I presume a Running Fitter was a role aboard a sailing ship within the Merchant Navy. Can anyone shed any light of what a Running Fitter did please? He seems to have spent most of his working life on Colliers between Hartlepool and London.

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Addletons in Loughborough
« on: Saturday 27 October 12 20:06 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Lucy Addleton who was born in Loughborough in 1839 and married William Winfield in 1865. In the 1911 census Lucy claimed that she had had 16 children of whom only 3 were still living. Along the way she had also managed to adopt a little boy! Can anyone provide the cemetery listings for children of Lucy Addleton in Loughborough please? I think her first child Sarah was born in 1863 before she married and I am aware of Emma (Selby) who died 4 June 1865 aged 14days while she was still a singlewoman.
I have found the ones that lived long enough to appear in a census but there must be many more who died young. I am descended from her daughter Louisa who died young in 1900. If any of her other descendants are researching please get in touch.

My grandfather Charles Herbert Winfield (9022) was a private in the Leicesters from about 1907. I know that at one stage they were stationed at Fermoy but can anyone shed any light on where else they may have been from 1907 to the outbreak of WW1? I know he was in the regimental football team. Does anyone know anything more about this?
