Family History Beginners Board / Suicide around 1900 re Henry George Standley
« on: Friday 17 September 10 18:18 BST (UK)  »
I'm still at a brick wall as to what happened to and how my Great Grandfather Henry George Standley born 1852 in Roudham, Wymondham died. Therefore, I am now considering whether he committed suicide. Does anyone know if a person committing suicide around the 1900 would still have a death certificate?   ???

The Common Room / The Stanley House
« on: Wednesday 11 August 10 17:03 BST (UK)  »
My Standley line from Norfolk has been traced back to Edward Standley/Stanley born c1500.  There are some researchers who believe this to be Edward Stanley
3rd Earl of Derby who married Dorothy Howard b 1500.  I would be delighted if this were true, but am not convinced! Where do I start to try and find out whether my Edward is this man?  I am a descendant from his son Hamond.

Kind Regards

Occupation Interests / Church verger records

My G Uncle Bertram Standley was a Church Verger.  He lived down Shelley Drive in Lincoln.  I don't know which church he worked in until he died in 1947.  Would be really grateful for any links or help in finding where he worked.

Kind Regards

The Common Room / Louth Workhouse
« on: Monday 09 August 10 20:59 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandmother, Ann Standley nee Snowden was back and fore Louth Workhouse between 1879 and 1900 with numerous admissions and discharges.  She seemed to have a troubled marriage to Henry George Standley and it appears she was frequently deserted by her husband.  However she still had a number of children throughout this period.  Based on a full term pregnancy, one of her children appears to have been conceived whilst she was in the workhouse but the birth certificate states it is her husband as the father.  I have a couple of questions I need help with.
1. Were inmates allowed outside the workhouse when admitted?
2. Was it common for women to be frequently inmates to the workhouse back and for for this amount of time?

Kind Regards
Nicki
