Could Charles have been home (in Birmingham) between 10/1/16 & 30/1/16?

If I'm reading his papers correctly; Charles was found 'drunk & incapable' on 30/12/15 in Pewsey, sentenced to 10 days C.B. (confined to barracks?) on 1/1/16 through till 10/1/16, before he EMBD (embarked?) on 30/1/16 from Southampton.

As you can probably guess, I'm a novice in relation to soldier's army papers so be gentle.  Would welcome thoughts on whether Charles definitely remained in barracks between 10/1/16 & 30/1/16 or could he have had any home leave during this time?

Down / Emerald Ancestors Comber, Co Down Presbyterian records pre 1880
« on: Saturday 20 March 21 08:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, does anyone know if Emerald Ancestors (EA) have the Presbyterian church records for Comber, County Down?  EA just list St Marys COI for Comber, so I asked them if they had any Presbyterian ones but never had a response, which doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Anyway, I thought I’d ask the knowledgeable people on here to get a definitive answer.  Apologies if this question has been answered before – a quick search didn’t bring up any results.  Regards, TonyR.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / COMPLETED Address look-up 1891 & 1901 English census please
« on: Wednesday 12 February 20 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, can someone please let me know actual address of Henry Colvin in both 1891 & 1901 English census?

I have found him on Familysearch website, but address isn’t noted.  1891 Henry age 36, a Labourer in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire with wife Sarah 29, Henry 8 (all born Ireland) then William 6, Maggie 4 & John 2, all born Lancashire.

1901 Henry age 45, a Mariner in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire with wife Sarah J. 40, Sarah 20, Henry 17 (all born Ireland) then Margaret 14, John 12, Mary 10, Archibald 8, Robert 4, Agnes 2 & Elizabeth 0, all born Lancashire. Many thanks. Regards, TonyR.

P.S. There is no need to search for family after 1901, as they are back in Ireland with the death of Sarah Colvin, wife of Henry, recorded in 1909 in Belfast and then Henry Colvin’s death recorded in 1910, also in Belfast.

Gran & Grandad Rooney, 1930s Ireland, probably in or near to Belfast.

Hi all, I think I can see some feint bluish writing on this photo, to the left of Grandad in his cap.  It might be a column of names, so if anyone agrees, can they try to enhance this writing to make it legible for me please.  I don’t need image enhancing or colourising, happy with it as it is.  I haven’t got original photo, just this scan and am told there’s no writing on back.  Please don’t spend hours on this, just hoping it might be a quick job for one of you magic workers.

BTW I won’t be offended if you all think I should go to specsavers instead!  Regards, TonyR.

P.S. I’ve got a few more photos that appear to have writing on, so the ‘prize’ for doing this one, might be me posting another!  ;D

The Common Room / What job are these women doing?
« on: Thursday 07 November 19 08:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, just wondered if anyone might know what job these women were doing or what industry they were working in?

To me the objects piled up might be cloth or skins ready for bleaching, but I know nothing.

Reason for asking is that woman on left is my Gran and during the late 1920s, when she was in her forties, she lived about 200 yards from a bleach works.  There is no date on photo, nor where it was taken, so I'm trying to connect photo to that time & place, with little confidence. All ideas welcomed.  Thanks, TonyR.

PS if mods think this is wrong forum, please feel free to move!

Antrim / Belfast street directories look-ups 1928-1936/37
« on: Thursday 19 September 19 06:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, I wonder if some kind soul can please help uncover the movements of my Rooney Grandparents from 1928 using the Belfast street directories?  They were in Birmingham, England around 1936/37, so only need look-ups till then.

(1) What I would like to know is – when did they appear in the street directory at 5 Ypres Park, Ex-Soldiers Cottages, Whiteabbey and how long did they stay there?  What I do know is - they are not there in the 1927 street directory, sent a letter from there in 1929 & a daughter married from there in 1930.

And (2) Did they move to 13 Fairview (Gardens) Carryduff, as another daughter married from that address in 1935 and if yes, how long were they there?  Of course, this daughter could have been a lodger there, so if my Grandparents aren’t there, the name of the recorded occupier might be of some interest.

I hope it’s straightforward & not too onerous to search the street directories.  Any help appreciated, and images would be brilliant.  Regards, TonyR.

From my Grandad’s service records it appears he was in the Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital at Millbank (MH 106/1629) from 15th July 1918 to 6th August 1918 suffering from influenza (this was ‘Spanish Flu’ time) before being transferred to the Central Military Hospital in Belfast. Obviously it would be great to get a copy of the Hospital Admission & Discharge Register for this time, but as the NA charge is ‘open-ended’ I wondered what others have paid for this service.

The NA charge a non-refundable £8.40 for a page check, before being able to say whether they hold the page & whether a copy can be made. After the page check, the NA then inform you the cost of making this copy and I’m just trying to get an indication of what others have paid for a copy, to decide whether it may be prohibitive cost or not. I know that these registers can be viewed free at the NA, which I could have managed a few years ago maybe, but there’s no way I can get down there now. Thanks for looking. Regards, TonyR.

Armed Forces / Uniform identification, if army could it be RIRifles?
« on: Friday 03 May 19 10:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello all, family story is that my great-uncle was serving with the Royal Irish Rifles in 1929. I then came across a family group photo & there's this chap in uniform, but it doesn't look very much like army to me.  Any knowledgeable people on here have any ideas?  Regards, TonyR.
PS I don't have original photo, just a digital scan of it, and attached is cropped from it - I know it's not brilliant, but it's all I have.

Dublin / Protestant baptism 4 Dec 1908 nearest church to Park Gate, Dublin?
« on: Tuesday 02 April 19 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, trying to find baptism of Sarah Rooney age 5, in 1908.  Sarah was RC, but being admitted to Smylys Childrens Homes and had to be Protestant.  This was being organized by the Soldiers Home in Parkgate Street, Dublin as Dad was in Richmond Barracks.  Paperwork from Soldiers Home has baptism arranged for 4 December 1908 & Sarah was CofI for 1911 census in Smyly Home.

Any ideas of nearest church & whether records are available would be appreciated. Just need info for family story (image would be brilliant) but no urgency.  Regards, TonyR.
