Monaghan / Gilliland Conly Ballybay
« on: Thursday 24 January 08 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my ggg grandparents who I believe came from Ballybay in Co Monaghan...
My G Grandfather Robert John Gilliland and his wife Maggie Conly eloped to Glasgow in 1898 to marry and settle in Glasgow. Robert's Father was George Earnest Gilliland who married Jane Turbitt around 1874.
Maggie's parents were James Conly and Eliza Cook.

George Earnest's parents I think were John Gilliland and Margaret Maxwell. I do not know too much except that they may have moved over to Ireland from Scotland as Plantation settlers?
Can anyone help please?
Thanks
Susan C

Also my GG Grandfather on my paternal side of my family, James Casey 1831, came from Co Monaghan his parents were Patrick Casey c1805 who married an Agnes Boyle c1805.
Can anyone tell me how to start a search for them?

Ireland / Help - Casey - Connelly
« on: Sunday 06 March 05 18:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Guys
This is my first time here. Had to make a new topic... Don't know where to begin! I am trying to trace my family tree:- James Casey (born approx 1860) married Mary Roache (born approx 1860) In Ireland (don't know where). Their son my Great Great Grandfather "Patrick Casey" b 1882 married "Margaret Connelly" b 1881. I think Margaret was born in Ireland too. My mum remembers them with Southern Irish accents. Patrick and Margaret Married in Lochee Dundee, Scotland 11/04/1902 and had my Grandfather "James Casey and Ellen Casey". My Grandfather James married Agnes Cummiskey and lived in the Shettleston area of Glasgow. Ellen married a "William Gentles". Patrick and Margaret died in the late 1950's. I'm trying to find out more on "James Casey and Mary Roache". Can anyone give me any advice.
Thank you so much.

24/01/2008: Changes made...
I have to change a lot of details in this post since I was last here, as I have found out more information...
James Casey was actually born in 1831, a lot earlier than I thought. He was married to Mary Roache who was born around 1845, in Scotland.
I have since found out that James came from Co Monaghan (1881 Glasgow Census).
James and Mary married at St Mary’s chapel Glasgow on the 28th day of June 1871. His Father was named as Patrick Casey (Labourer) (D.O.B c1805), and his mother was Agnes Casey M.S. Boyle (D.O.B c1805). Presumably born in Ireland...

The 1881 Census for 31 Greenvale Street Glasgow, shows...
The head of the family is
James Casey - Head - Rag Store Labourer - age 50 - born in Ireland. (Dob 1831/2)
Mary Casey - Wife - Winder - age 36 - Born Glasgow. (Dob 1845)
Alice Casey - Dau - Scholar - age 10 - Born Glasgow. (Dob 1871)
Mary Casey - Dau - age 2 - Born Glasgow. (Dob 1879)
Andrew Monaghan - Brother in Law - Cork Cutter - 37 - Born Glasgow.
Andrew Monaghan - Nephew - age 14 - Born Glasgow

My G Grandfather Patrick Casey, James and Mary’s son was born later the same year... That's why he is not on this census)!
So he was definitely born in Glasgow and not as previously though (in Ireland).
Margaret known as Maggie’s parents were James Connelly c1843, Labourer and Marion Croall c1846.
Maggie’s address was 49 Burnside Street. Strangely the address where Maggie and Patrick married was 49 Burnside Street too…
James and Marion married in 08.07.1864, age 18 and 19, which makes their dates of birth earlier than I'd thought… 1845/46.
They married in 13 Birnie Place Registry Office after Banns according to the "Church of Scotland".  (Marion was Protestant)?

I think this is why Patrick (Catholic) and Maggie (Protestant) went to Dundee to marry in 1902 because their marriage was frowned upon. They lived back in Glasgow shortly after that.

So now I need to find my GGG Grandfather Patrick Casey who may have been born in 1805 or earlier and he was married to Agnes Boyle... They lived in Co Monaghan...
Can you help?

Thanks
