Lancashire / Gertrude Billington (Howard) Manchester
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 14:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out any information I can on Gertude Billington. she was my grandmother neice and I believe she was born around 1922. The only ref to her I have is from the Stafford Sentinal in 1925 when her father William Billington killed himself, his wife Catherine (nee Howard) and Jesse and Raymond their children. Gertrude appears to have survived and was described as in a serious condition, and I have the grave records for the family and she is not buried in the communal plot in southern cem. The incident took place in Hulme Manchester. Catherines Parents George and Emma Howard lived in the same street so it would seem likely that they would have taken Gertrude on themselves. George Haward appears in the grave records with the rest of the famil at plot R335 in Southern Cem along with my grandmother Ellen Billington who died giving birth to my father George Johnson in 1926.

Any help in tracing this lady would be greatly appreciated.

Lancashire / Burials \ Grave - Mcr Southern Cemetary
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 10:12 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what the policy is for the number of people interred in a single grave at Manchester Southern Cem ?
The reason I ask is that I have in my posession a grave cert for plot R335, in this grave according to mcr burial records are 7 people:-
William and Marion Billington and their 2 children (buried 17/6/1925 after William broke down and killed self and family), Ellen (also known as Nellie) Johnson (nee Billington - Williams sister and my grandmother - Died 1926 giving birth to my father), George Howard (father of Marion Billington), and the person I assume was Marions mother \ Georges wife - Emma Catherine Howard (maiden name unknown).

Would this be likey to be a burial of ashes ? An Extra wide plot ? or just very very deep ?
The children were 4 years old and 11 months so they could have conceiviably shared a coffin by themselves or be buried with their mother so this could reduce the number to 5 coffins.
Non of the family were wealthy, William and Ellen were in the poor house in 1901, the area they lived was a deprived one, and I have a late payment notice from a week (there is irony) before my grandmothers death for non payment of the 1925 burial fees.

Can anyone help please.

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the regs \  customs or any other factors were.

apart from wanting to trace my roots, I am curious to know if he was related to the Rev Thomas Corser who published many works up his death in 1861

Lancashire / Seeking help identifying maternal grandmother - manchester
« on: Friday 20 August 10 13:12 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help
My Mother Frances Joyce Johnson was born in 1926 (died 1998 - surname at birth Corser), the woman I was brought up to beleive was my grandmother Johanna Mary Corser (nee smith - 1908/1981) married my grandfather 12 years after the birth of my mother in 1938.
My grandfather was Thomas Corser - born around 1900, died 1966. I have some vague information that my biological grandmother may have been Frances Carty, though I can find no records to substantiate this at the moment, I have no information whatsoever on Frnaces, I can find no marriage information nor any information on her death.
I need to get a copy of my mothers birth cert which I will next time I am in Manchester, but can anyone help by pointing me in the right direction for any online search engines which may help.

Lancashire / George Johnson
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 14:28 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about my paternal grandfather George Johnson, I believe his full name may have been George Henry Johnson. The only things I know about him are that in 1926 he was married to Ellen Billington (died 4th August that year whilst giving birth to my father), that his occupation was given as "Motor Lorry Driver(General0", and that at the time of my fathers birth in 1926 he was living at 6 Bird St, Ardwick, Manchester M8 (the location of which is now a childrens playground off viaduct st.
for some reason my fahter and his family were not on speaking terms, I vaguely remember as a child in the late 60's visiting someone I think was my grandfather, he was at that time living in a pre-fab house (and for some reason I think it may have been over near Wythenshaw hospital, though i have no idea where I get this from).

I do know my father was in contact with someone from his family, as I contacted a gentleman in 1995 when my father died (got the name from his address book) who claimed to be his cousin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
