Kerry / A.O.H Tralee 1916
« on: Tuesday 28 August 12 00:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone knew of any information (minutes, records etc) relating to the Ancient Order of Hibernians based in Tralee around 1916?

My Great Grandfather was a member of the order and was responsible for the hall in 1916 when Captain Monteith came to stay.  I know a little of my g-grandfather's life after 1950 but would like to know more about the man.  If anyone knows if the hall used is still standing, I would love to know.

Cheers,

Carrumba

Perthshire / Help with a placename location/translation
« on: Friday 13 January 12 18:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there all.

Need help with a place name I have not been able to find on any maps but know it existed!

It was part of the Bonhard estate in Perthshire (past Scone and close to Murrayshall).  I am tracking a Blair family and have an Alexander Blair appearing in the Horse Tax rolls of 1797-98 (just listed as Bonhard).  Bonhard covered Bonhard House and a few different farms as well as a mill so was trying to narrow down the location a bit.  On the list of Perthshire Voters for 1832 and 1837 I have found the Blair residence listed as "Finduie of Bonhard".  Cannot find this building anywhere so was trying to find the meaning of Finduie but to no avail!  The closest I have found is the Geordie word Findie basically meaning "claimed".  There is a Finduie Wood near Abernethy but any translation is evading me at the moment.

Any ideas you clever lot? :-)

Perthshire / Graham Family, Dunning
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 07:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Bit of a long shot this.

I am in touch with a few descendants of Joseph Graham (ab1805-1889) who married Elizabeth Guthrie (1804-1851) and later re-married to Margaret Miller.

I am trying to die down Joseph's parents.  On  his death certificate his father is listed as Jospeh Graham and his birth place through all census entries is given as Dunning.

No birth entry found on Scotlands People, LDS or the OPR microfiche.  Joseph (born ab 1805) was a cattle dealer.  One other confirmed son of Joseph Graham and Barbara Bruce was also a cattle dealer from Dunning.  Joseph Graham (born ab 1805) had a son, also Joseph who named one of his daughters Barbara Bruce Graham (Perth) which would hint at a connection with Joseph Graham and Barbara Bruce (Perth) but if anyone out there knows of some evidence to back it up then I would love to know about it :-)

Cheers all!

Perthshire / Joseph Graham Birth about 1802, Dunning?
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 14:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi there :-)

This has been a bit of a puzzler for me.  Have been researching this particular character for a friend in Australia but his birth has been quite hard to tie down.  Have managed to trace him through both his marriages, different farms around Perth he lived in   and all censuses but his birth and parents are being elusive.

He gives his place of birth consistently as Dunning.  He died in Scone in 1889 and the death certificate has his age as 87 giving a birth of about 1802.  However, the reporter is his son-in-law who possibly did not know much about Joseph - he listed Joseph's fathers name as Joseph Graham but did not know the mothers name.  When I checked the original death entry in the Archives, Joseph's age at death is listed instead as 78 giving a birth of about 1811!  So son-in-law or the recorder of death... one of em got it wrong!

Have checked the microfiche at Perth Library but could not find a birth entry for a Joseph Graham at all from 1797 to 1813.

I tried to find possible siblings and did come across an Anthony Murray Graham born in 1798 in Perth to a Joseph Graham and Barbara Bruce.  They had another child, William Graham in 1816 in Dunning which places them in the right place geographically.  Joseph, Barbara and Anthony are all names used by Joseph for his children.

Any help would be much appreciated!

** Edit** realised I posted this in the wrong thread - oops!  Now re-posting in the lookup requests thread.   :P

Hi there.

Am looking for any assistance on a group of Mathiesons I am trying to trace who originate in Keig, Aberdeenshire.  Specifically, am looking for any information on the children of John Mathieson (1831-1883) and Betsy Allan (b1835).  They were both born in Keig and married in 1856.

Children were:

Jessie Mathieson (1856) - found traced her up to 1911
Margaret Mathieson (1858)- possibly married a man by surname Armstrong but cannot find a marriage entry.  Based on a 1891 census entry that may or may not be her.
Jane Taylor Mathieson (1863)
Betsy Mathieson (1866)
John Mathieson (1875)
Alexander Mathieson (1877) - Again, may have him in Forresters Croft, Keig in 1891 census where Margaret Armstrong is listed as a visitor.

The family home for John and Betsy was Little Tulloch on the Forbes estate certainly up to 1881.  Any help appreciated :-)

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Albert Ebenezer Parker
« on: Monday 16 May 11 19:55 BST (UK)  »
Hey all.

At long last I have a lead on my mother's side of the family, well, sort of.

My great aunt (sister of mother's mother) died a while ago but I have managed to get a copy of her marriage certificate to Ron Luckett.  Violet's parentage is a little uncertain though I have found a birth entry in the Midlands for Violet Parker, mother's surname "Taylor".  Violet had the middle name "Ellen" so perhaps mother was Ellen taylor... unsure.  Both my grandmother and Violet shared the surname Parker when they married but Violet was 13 years older than my grandmother.  Anyway, i digress.

My grandmother told my mother that her and Violet's father died when she was young however, on the marriage certificate for Violet and Ron (1956), Violet's father is not listed as deceased like Ron's.  His name is given as Albert Ebenezer Parker, occupation Lorry Driver.  Something isn't ringing true somewhere but unfortunately, I am working with scraps.  Violet was born in 1924 and my grandmother was born in 1937.

With the middle name of "Ebenezer" I thought he would be easy to find but has evaded me so far.  The only vague hits I have found so far are:

A.E Parker burial 1956 Wiltshire
Albert Ebenezer Parker, Birth, Jan-Feb-Mar 1899, Aston, Warwickshire

Whole family were/are Midlands based around Birmingham/Coventry

Any help appreciated!   ;D

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Charles Javens, "Trent Hero", 1881
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi there.

One of the more interesting characters I have found on my wife's side of the family was Charles Javens who turned up on the 1881 census on-board a boat called "Trent Hero" in Kingston-upon-Hull harbour- he is living with his wife and two of their children plus one other Mariner.

On the original document the boat is listed as Keil "Trent Hero".  Have poked about a bit on the internet but cannot find anything to tell me what the "Trent Hero" was.  My natural assumption was a river-boat/barge but it's only a guess.  Does anyone know how I can identify any information on the Trent Hero and what the keil part means?

Cheers!   :)

**EDIT..SORRY....I meant 1881!  Changed now!**

Cork / Jones, Castletownbeara, c1830-1850
« on: Monday 04 April 11 11:12 BST (UK)  »
hi all.

When I started researching my Irish family tree, my father always said there was a family tradition of a Welsh connection.  Lo and behold, I find that my g-g-grandmother, Francis, was a Jones.  She was born in 1868 and lived in Ardgroom, Cork.

Her father, I believe, was Thomas Jones born about 1831 in Wales and moved to Ardgroom in 1857 and married a Mary Warner.

His father who was also called Thomas Jones was a Welshman (Born c1800) in an Artillery regiment who, I believe, married a woman of surname Crowley in Ireland.

I have not been able to find anything on the IGI at all and have only vaguely poked about at military records.  If any of this seems familiar to anyone out there that might be able to cast light on any of the Jones' then I would be most grateful! :-)
