Europe Resources & Offers / French BMD Records, Nord Departement 1802 - 1892
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 20:08 BST (UK)  »
This may be a bit of an obscure one to most people but if you happen to have ancestors who came from this area of France which includes Dunkirk & Lille then it may be of help.

The alphabetical indexes cover periods of 10 years and are specific to each town or commune (there is no national index to the French records) so you have to know more or less where your ancestors lived.

You don't actually need to know much french to navigate around the site but I'll be happy to provide some pointers if anyone needs any help.

The same site also has the 1906 census for the same area but there is no index so you'd have to have a lot of time on your hands if you wanted to find someone!

The link is:

and you then need to click on "Consulter les archives en ligne"

Bonne Chance!

The Common Room / Photos - Dates & Ages
« on: Monday 23 July 07 15:03 BST (UK)  »
A distant cousin sent me the attached photos and kindly agreed to let me post them here.

We're trying to work out who the people are in the photos as we have some doubts about the information my cousin was given by a great aunt about the identity of the subjects.

My cousin's great aunt said she thought that the couple was my ggg uncle (b. 1822) and his wife and that the gentleman in the other photo was our ggg grandfather (1787 - 1881).  However, searching on Google, it appears that the photographer Mr Ash, was working in Newington Causeway between 1881 & 1887.  I cannot find any date information on the other photographer. C Herman.

Any thoughts on estimating a date from the clothes or furniture in the studios as well as the likely ages of the subjects would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Al

The Lighter Side / The right certificate?

Have you ordered BMD certificates from the GRO or local records office?

If so, how successful have you been in ordering the right ones?

Devon Lookup Requests / Tiverton Parish Records
« on: Friday 11 August 06 00:38 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of any links to Tiverton parish records for the period 1810-1830?

I'm looking for baptism records for my gg grandfather John Kerslake WOODGATES born about 1819 or his brothers Thomas (born about 1822) and Henry (born about 1828).  Their parents were Barnet WOODGATES and Elizabeth - I'd like to try and find Elizabeth's maiden name.

Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Egypt WWI
« on: Tuesday 13 June 06 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My Sister in Law sent me the attached two scans of a photo of my Grandfather which we believe he sent to his Mother from Egypt during or just after WWI.  The photo appears to be in quite good condition compared to some of the ones that the experts have worked magic on here.

The scans I received were 2.5MB files but the picture doesn't seem to have lost too much resolution in the reduction to ~250kB.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to have a go at cleaning up the photo.

Regards,

Al

ps Can anyone extract any more detail from the shoulder badge or is this wishful thinking as a result of watching too much CSI? ;D

Armed Forces / How common is this shape of badge?
« on: Monday 12 June 06 22:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've had the search for what my Grandfather did during the Great War on the back burner for several months after having no luck in tracking down anything on him from a photo which I posted here in August last year.  I've just come across a picture of a badge that seems to be the same shape as one he has on his shoulder in a rather fuzzy photgraph.

Could I be on the right track here or were there lots of badges of this general shape used during WWI?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Al

Occupation Interests / Road Scavenger
« on: Thursday 06 April 06 18:57 BST (UK)  »
Since my own research has come to a bit of a halt I've been looking into family trees for a couple of friends and came across an ancestor of one of them in the 1901 census with the occupation "Carter and Road Scavenger".

What would a "Road Scavenger" have done?  The gentleman with this occupation lived in rural Somerset and I have visions of him scraping dead badgers up off the A38 and taking them home for the pot.  Surely not.........?

Al

Just came across this extensive page of links:

I don't think I've seen any reference on here to this page before.
