Hi,

:)

I am having significant difficulty in finding the full marriage certificates for four members of my family. If anyone can help me, I would be absolutely delighted. I am looking for the full marriage certificates because I am trying to find the respective parents of both sets of bride and groom. I know that Martha Sterling and Margaret Sterling’s parents were John Sterling and Elizabeth Steel but as of yet I can find no trace of parents for the other members of my family? All that I would really like to know are the names of their parents, if possible. Unfortunately because I still do not have access to online ancestry sites it is difficult for me to find information. I believe that all should have been born in Londonderry or have some connection with Derry at the very least. Any help would be very much appreciated!

The names are:

Martha Sterling (Born in Londonderry) and Alexander Jameson (Married between 1890 and 1925)

James Brown and Catherine McKeenichan (A marriage certificate for James Brown’s son Robert shows his parents as Catherine McKeenichan – I do not know if this is her actual surname as it sounds quite unusual, perhaps McKinihan is more appropriate? Either James or Catherine may have had Scottish ancestry) (Married between 1845 and 1890)

Also:

Margaret Sterling and James Allen (Married between 1910 and 1925)
David Holmes and Tillie (maiden name unknown) (Married between 1890 and 1915)

Many thanks!

Derry (Londonderry) / Apprentice Boys?
« on: Friday 24 September 10 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
I was just wondering, does anyone know if the Apprentice Boys Museum in Derry has records of members between the years 1880-1920 and if so, what sort of information is contained within the records in regards to specific members? Has anyone any experience in trying to ascertain whether or not an ancestor may have been involved in the Apprentice Boys or loyal order institutions in Derry?
Thanks.

Derry (Londonderry) / John and Elizabeth Sterling. The Sterlings of Derry.
« on: Friday 24 September 10 17:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
I am currently researching John and Elizabeth Sterling, both of whom lived in Chamberlain Street prior to moving to the Fountain area of the city side.

They had four children:

Margaret Jane Sterling MARRIED James Allen
(There is a connection here to the Ulster Unionist politician Jack Allen whom I believe may be their grandson?)

Martha Sterling MARRIED Alexander Jameson

Isabella Sterling MARRIED Robert Brown (I have much more information concerning Isabella and Robert)

Mary Sterling ?

Edward Sterling (whom served in the First World War and died in 1917 having not married)

I cannot find Margaret, Martha or Mary on any of the census records of 1901 and 1911, and I have no trace of them later in life. If anyone knows ANY information on the people mentioned, I would be absolutely delighted!  :)

Hi.
I wonder if anyone can help me. I am trying to research my second great grandfather Robert Brown and his wife Isabella Sterling (born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland around 1863).  My second great grandfather was a Roman Catholic and his wife was a Protestant and due to the mixed religious aspect of their relationship they briefly fled from Ireland around 1875 to Scotland, where they married sometime between 1880 and 1900. I was wondering, as I do not have access to the various online ancestry websources due to a lack of a credit card... :-[...I was wondering if anyone can help me in regards to locating a marriage certificate? Or if anyone has any connections?
Thanks everyone!  :)

Hi.
I am trying to research my family and I was hoping that someone here may be able to help me in regards to the marriage certificate of my great grandmother. My family had always assumed that her name was Elizabeth Page but there is no sign of an Elizabeth Page anywhere on the Irish census records but when I typed in her wedding date and the name of her spouse I found a marriage record in which she states her name as: Elizabeth Webb (Page). Can anyone tell me why she would add an extra name next to her own on her marriage certificate? I have found an Elizabeth Webb living with her family on the 1901 Irish census but I can see no reason for the addition of Page in brackets next to her own name. The strange thing is, is that I can find no birth certificate for an Elizabeth Page or Webb Page. This is what the certificate says:

1911
Groom's name: Denis Cassidy
Bride's name: Elizabeth Webb (Page)

Thanks!  ;D

Suffolk / Help needed! Frederick Lawrence, Stonham Aspall?
« on: Friday 27 August 10 22:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
I have previously posted a topic regarding my second great grandfather Frederick Lawrence.

On the 1881 census my second great grandfather Frederick Lawrence is listed as a Sgt. in the West Suffolk Militia, having previously served in the 54th Regiment of Foot, and he is living with his wife, Maryann and their four children (Lydia, Ellen, Samuel and Frederick) in the Barracks in Bury St. Edmunds. On the 1881 census Frederick Lawrence states that he was born in Stonham Aspall in Suffolk in 1840/41. When I looked at the 1851 census I found a Frederick Lawrence, aged 10, who was born in Little Stonham living in the Barham Workhouse in Suffolk with a Lydia and Amelia Lawrence. I can only assume that Lydia and Amelia were Frederick's mother and sister because Frederick subsequently has two children, one born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland named Lydia and a second born in India named Ellen Amelia Lawrence. I cannot locate Frederick Lawrence on the 1841 census and he is not recorded on either the 1861 or 1871 census but this is due to the fact that he is with his regiment in Ireland and India. I recently found Frederick Lawrence's marriage certificate from 1870. He was married in Londonderry to Maryann Sweeney and on the marriage certificate he lists his father's name as Frederick Lawrence and that he worked as a moulder. This has left me rather confused because I had assumed that Frederick's father was dead - mostly because Lydia Lawrence, who is living with Amelia in England is listed as a widow in the 1871 census. Would it be unusual for a groom to name his father on a civil marriage certificate as well as his occupation?

On another note, I am almost entirely sure that Lydia is Fredierck's mother and that Amelia is his sister due to family recollections and also the fact that there are a great many connections between the names and the area of their births etc.

I have tried to locate Frederick Lawrence's father but I cannot find him on any of the census records. Is it likely that he is dead given the fact that he is not listed on any of the post 1941 census records and his wife in 1851 is living in the Barham workhouse as well as her two children and that one of the children, Lydia was born in the workhouse? Also, would it be normal for a boy to be put into the army straight from a workhouse as would appear to be the case with my second great grandfather?

Can anyone offer me any help in regards to my questions? Unfortunately as I live in Northern Ireland I cannot easily conduct research in England, so any help would be wonderful!
Thanks!

Also, does anyone know if the Suffolk Archive in Bary St. Edmunds holds any records in regards to the West Suffolk Militia as I rang the office yesterday and I was told that all records are held at Kew and yet another person told me today that the office does hold records in regard to the militia.

Donegal / Help needed. David, Margaret and Elizabeth Page (Fanad)
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 17:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
I am currently researching my family and I have hit a brick wall in regards to my 2nd great grandmother, Elizabeth Page who was the daughter of David and Margaret Page. Elizabeth and her parents were apparently from Fanad in Donegal. Elizabeth later lived in Derry City and was buried in the Derry City Cemetary in 1971 alongside her husband, Denis Cassidy who appears on both the 1901 and 1911 Irish census records in Rossville Street, Derry. Unfortunately, I can find no trace of Elizabeth or her parents on the 1901 and 1911 Irish census records online and I have even checked ancestry.co.uk and nothing has come up. Can anyone offer any advice here or if they may be able to help me? I obtained the names of Elizabeth's parents from the City Cemetary Records but there is no address listed for them.
Many thanks!

Suffolk / Barham Workhouse Records? 2nd Great Grandfather
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 14:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
I live in Northern Ireland but I am currently researching my 2nd great grandfather, Frederick Lawrence (born in Stonham, Suffolk in 1840). I recently discovered that my 2nd great grandfather had been recorded on the 1951 census as being a pauper in the Barham Workhouse along with his mother Lydia and sister Amelia. My 2nd great grandfather later joined the West Suffolk Militia and served in India. I am not sure when he joined the army but he does not appear on another English census until 1881 when he is recorded as living with his wife, from Ireland, and their four children, three of whom were born in India, in Bury St. Edmunds. Does anyone know where I can find some records concerning the Barham Workhouse, for example when my 2nd great grandfather was put into the workhouse and when he was discharged and if he went into the British army straight from the workhouse?

As I do not live in England, and would find it difficult to visit in order to conduct research can anyone help me in this regard? Many thanks!
