Cheshire / George Savage of Helsby and New Zealand.
« on: Tuesday 16 May 17 16:04 BST (UK)  »
It has been quite a while since I 'posted' information on my late.great Uncle, George Savage who died on North Island, New Zealand.
The New Zealand end of my journey is not too far off closure..I have a copy of the inquest into my uncle's death. By contacting the Principal of the Kihikihi school, (recently published the 125 yrs Jubilee history of the school, in which is a picture /photograph of the original school where the inquest was held.
I also have the name of the Post Office Master (& druggist) from where the cablegram informing my gt.grandparents of the death of George Savage..Likewise in Helsby, I have a postcard showing the original postoffice & mistress the cablegram arrived to.
Does anyone know the route the cablegram cable took from Cornwall to Helsby? The cable being laid by Isambard Kingdom Brunel..crew and the Great Eastern ship.
Druid...please, may I use your photograph of the original Helsby school when I get around to collating all my information?
Concentrating on the Helsby end..Mountskill Quarry & the Cholmondoley estates is a starting part, Joseph Arch clearly pays a 'big' role in my gt.uncle's decision to migrate to New Zealand under the Julius Vogel scheme.
The sailing ship, the 'Orient' on which George was a 2nd class passenger, the 1st ship to depart England for Australia using both Steam and sail. Anyone have information on the departure from England on this ship?
Many thanks for reading this 'post'. Archives1

« on: Thursday 16 May 13 21:29 BST (UK)  »

I have made considerable progress in my searchings for information re George Savage, formerly of Helsby,Cheshire,England.

I now have George Savage 'on board' information.  His ship of passage was the 'ORIENT', departing Tilbury,England for Adelaide,Australia.. arriving 17th December,1879. On board details are:- Savage   George   aged 20 yrs   Orient   B 375

Thanks to an Australia Roots member, I have a copy of the original inventory re crew and passengers.

I would be extremely grateful if, a ROOTS member could possibly see which ship,George Savage departed from Adelaide for North Island, were there any fellow passengers who also made this journey?

Although I now reside in Wales, I am originally from Frodsham,Cheshire.. the next village along the A56 to Helsby.. heading toward the Runcorn/Warrington area.

Many, many thanks.

Apologies if this sounds a little vague, hey, doesn't a lot of family and local history start off thus? Vague ideas..

Cheshire / Lutheran Bell ..St.Dunstan's Church, Frodsham
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 20:22 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information as to how a replica of the Lutheran Bell off Isambard Kingdom Brunel's amazing ship ' Great Eastern' came to be hung over the front of Frodsham's unique 'Tin Church' ?
I know this ship ended up on Tranmere beach where is was broken up. A replica of the bell was made after which, the bell was 'housed' above the front of the then St.Dunstan's Church,, The bell remains in situ to this day.
I would appreciate any information 'ROOTS' members may offer.
Many thanks.. :)

Cheshire / telegraph 'office' Helsby.
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 21:23 BST (UK)  »
A number of you will recollect my 'journey/s with my great uncle,George Savage who was found drowned in the Pinui River, North Island,New Zealand.

My journey has been really fascinating with a number of truly amazing links. I was at the pint of concluding this journey when, the most important research of all, struck me!
My journey started with George Savage's name on his parents headstone..but ? how did my great grandparents learn of their sons tragic death?
c 1870s a 2nd successful attempt was made to lay the telegraph/wireless cable from Ausralia/New Zealand to the England to Dorset. But ! what would be the route from Dorset to Cheshire..on to a small village in Helsby..I believe the initial office was  Rose Farm or, Mount Farm bfore moving to the then postal office. This is my quest? how did the cable reach to Helsby,to Rose Farm? Who would have been the person in charge?
The ship used was Isambard Kingdom Brune;s 'Great Eastern', eventually broken up on Tranmere foreshore..the amazing link is, a  replica of theship's bell hangs in the bell tower at the church I attended in Frodsham...Frodsham Main Street Community Church, once known as'The Tin Church.'

To think,I was passing daily, a direct link between myself and my great uncle? Amazing.

Australia / George SAVAGE 13-02-1859 to 20-11-1882
« on: Thursday 10 May 12 17:09 BST (UK)  »
Some of you may have read of my great uncle,George Savage,in a past copy of the exciting new publication.'Inside History'.

I have gained a terrific amount of information through Christine Clement's excellent reply. A good number of questions answered that neither my cousin,Joan, & I just could not work out.

Having thought George Savage sailed directly to New Zealand,I now know this was not true..in fact, the ship George sailed in, shipped into Eastern Australia first.

I would be most grateful if someone could see if they are able to locate this ship? Possibly,George's passage was paid for hom..his future employer was Mr,Edward Tole (I do have information as to the proceedure leading to George's eventually move to Orakau..and of my great uncle's tragic death.

My great uncle's details are as follows:-
Born to David Savage and Alice (Yates) Savage of Helsby in Cheshire..

date of  birth   ..13-02-1859...death is recorded as 20-11-1882.

I know the ship sailed from Liverpool, but no further information..eg name of ship..port /s arrived..eventually arrival in New Zealand. dates for arriving in Australia is 1876/7/8..George is recorded as having lived in Orakau about 4 years.

Should you require any further information,I will do my utmost to assist you.

My most sincere thanks for your kind assistance..

Cheshire / Alfred Ernest Savage born 21st October 1900
« on: Thursday 05 January 12 21:37 GMT (UK)  »

My uncle,Alfred Ernest Savage, born in Helsby on 21st October 1900, salied to Canada  in May 1921 on board the SS Minnesdosa.Alfred landed at Quebec, travelling on to Hurdman's Bridge. Through 'Canada ROOTS' I do have information on this aspect of my search. Ideally,I would so love to discover exactly where Alfred was seconded to. Are there likely to be any records anywhere that just might hold this information?

Why did Alfred journey so far to work? To the best of my knowledge, only Harold (of the sons) was conscripted to the armed forces. I do have a fairly good understanding of life for both my uncles and Grandma Savage plus Great -grandma Scott on the farm, grand-dad having died at a very young age..47yrs.
Tell me please? Was there,at that time, young men & women being sent out to Commonwealth nations to work?
My cousin in Helsby seems to recollect Grandma Savage having to sign an agreement for her son to travel to Canada, no mention of ever being in the forces.

Many thanks for any information ROOTS members may be able to provide.  ;)

Canada / Alfred Ernest Savage ss Minesdosa May 1921 to Quebec
« on: Tuesday 03 January 12 21:24 GMT (UK)  »

May 1921 saw my late Uncle,Alfred Ernest Savage..born 21st October,1900 -Helsby,Cheshire,England,arriving at Quebec. Ship's manifest indicates place of residence to be Hurdman's Bridge,Ont.,nature of work to be farm labourer. Tax status 'B&FEP ?Col 12?7

Alfred did indeed come from a farming background in Cheshire. Born in Helsby ,Cheshire, his parents were allocated a farm (of the Cholmondoley Estates of Cheshire) in Frodsham..Millstone Farm. Sadly, grand-dad died at the young age of 47yrs. Although the older sons tried to keep the farm functioning, it really wasn't able to sustain a large family of growing boys/men...all of whom were at home.

It wasn't over long before the older men made their way away from the farm. Grandma 'signed' for Alfred to migrate to Canada to Ontario via Quebec.

Alfred's older brother,Harold & his wife,Ethel Marie meanwhile migrated to Boston,Penna. It was to Harold and Ethel that Alfred, once he had 'served his time' migrated to.

I have known Alfred moved to Quebec, thinking this was to be his 'place oof residence'? Not so,I believe.. Alffred actually lived on a farm in Ontario..Hurdman's Bridge.

I would so appreciate any information 'ROOTS' members are able to provide no matter how small, absolutely any snippets of information will be very much appreciated.

My sincere thanks.

Judith S.. :)
