London and Middlesex / Marriage record
« on: Monday 27 May 19 10:13 BST (UK)  »
Emily Ballard married in the June quarter of 1845 in St Marylebone.
Volume 1 Page 221

For some reason her possible partners names are not showing.

I'm trying to find her marriage to James Brown and think this may be the one.

Other than sending for this marriage certificate, please does anyone know how I can find who this marriage was to. Or please can anyone find the marriage between Emily Ballard and James Brown....because my mind is spinning around in circles  :)

Occupation Interests / Team Man?
« on: Monday 08 April 19 20:52 BST (UK)  »
Please can some kind soul decipher and explain this occupation on the 1911 census?

It looks like Teamman .......but that doesn't make sense to me. He obviously works for a farmer and so it is an occupation in the agricultural category but I wonder what a team man does?

Many thanks  :)

Kent / Ashurst/Speldhurst burial records
« on: Friday 01 March 19 09:46 GMT (UK)  »
Please does anyone have access to the death records for the Ashhurst/ Speldhurst area of Kent?

I would like to know the dates of death for Thomas and Mary Carpenter. They probably died in Ashurst between the years 1832-1841.

I believe Thomas was born in 1794 and Mary in 1799, to give some ideas of their ages.

Many thanks  :)

Sussex / Heathfield baptism
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 21:47 GMT (UK)  »
According to the 1841-1871 censuses Thomas Reed was born about 1806 in Heathfield. He married there in 1826 and died there in 1878

I can find no baptism for him around 1806 though, having used the SFHG records and several online websites.

According to a number of online tress......and we all know how accurate they can be!.......he was born in Heathfield in 1803, the son of Samuel Reed and Elizabeth Easton. His first son was christened Samuel but that is not proof he was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth.

I thought I would run this past you all as I cannot find his baptism but that's not to say it's not available. I have just run out of ideas.

Grateful for any help  :)

The Common Room / Opinions would be appreciated
« on: Monday 04 February 19 09:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching a particularly knotty branch of my tree and have come to the following conclusion but do not know how likely it is......

A woman was born in Norfolk in 1795 and in 1825 gave birth to an illegitimate son. The parish record states base born.

In 1829 the lady marries, in the same parish, and the parish record states that she is a widow.

Her husband is 13 years younger than her and they have a daughter together the following year.

I have researched using freereg, ancestry, findmypast and the genealogist and can come to no other conclusion but my question is.......

How likely is it that a lady would state she is a widow...when she clearly is not....and that the marriage would take place in the same Church as that of her illegitimate sons baptism?
Surely the priest would realise that she is not being truthful?

Please could someone be kind enough to tell me if there is a baptism for Ainsley Harris, around 1827, in Lewes?

Thank you so much......in anticipation.

Armed Forces / What uniform is he wearing
« on: Sunday 01 April 18 07:45 BST (UK)  »
I seem to have done some very sloppy research last Summer and now have no idea where I obtained this photo from or even if it is really the person I hoped it was!
Please can anyone confirm what uniform he is wearing and an approximate date for the photo.
I was trying to find more information about William Cartwright who was an officer with the 9th Royal Veteran Battalion and whilst googling for more information I remember this photograph appeared but I'm now doubting it is truly William as I cannot replicate my search or trace my source.

Other Countries / Ran away to South America?
« on: Wednesday 28 February 18 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
James Shorrock was born in Preston, Lancashire, England in 1872.  By 1901 he was married with children and working as a bank cashier. Unfortunately in 1907 he was declared bankcrupt  and by 1911 his wife is head of the family. James cannot be found on the UK 1911 census and the tale handed down through the generations since is that James went to start a new life in South America.

I have found a record on the incoming passenger list for a James Shorrock, accountant, born 1872, sailing from River Plate, South America, to Liverpool in 1931. This would seem to support the family tale but can find no subsequent records for him and so wondered if anyone had access to any South American records which may fill in the rest of his life?

London and Middlesex / Looking for a birth certificate
« on: Wednesday 28 February 18 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Reid (Reed on his marriage record) says on the 1881 and 1891 censuses he was born in 1847/48 St Martin's in the fields. Before his marriage in 1870 he doesn't seem to exist.

I thought I would try to find his birth record and send for the birth certificate but am confused about the registration districts of London. Cannot find a birth record specifically in St Martin's in the Fields.

I think I should order the marriage certificate first but would still like the birth certificate in due course....but which one! Since he was consistent on the 2 censuses, which district covers St Martin's in the Fields? Or is that a district in its own right?
