Clackmannanshire / Stalking my ol' Granny
« on: Sunday 04 March 12 05:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Roots Chatters,

I found out that my Grandma used to work at Tulliallan Fabrics for many years when she was a lass, before she emigrated to New Zealand in the 1930s.  I have searched archive catalogues online and can't find much of that vintage for Tulliallian Fabrics - I'd like to know if their old records are in a library somewhere or something like that, or if there are any local history groups etc I could get in touch with.

Does the Clackmannan or Alloa Library have a local photo archive that may include pictures of working conditions there?  I suppose it would be easy enough for me to email and ask them that, wouldn't it!  I will do that.

Thanks,
OchAye

Perthshire / How would I find old Perth Lawyer records?
« on: Saturday 03 March 12 04:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

My Great Grandfather Giovanni COSTADASI seems to have used the same Perth Lawyer for all his dealings - John A. Stewart of MacGregor & Stewart.  I have found his name connected with various court appearances for the family, and the family story is that Giovanni wound up being a drunk and going bankrupt, also there is a mysterious surname change to LEONARDI, so I was hoping the lawyer's documents could shed some light on these things.

I don't even know whether you're allowed to ever see these documents or whether there's a 100 year limit or something, but does anyone know how I could find out?  I have tried googling the firm's name and nothing comes up.  I hired a Scottish Genealogist to look in to Giovanni's dodgy past but there's a lot that she didn't find that RootsChatters have pointed me to on the internet so I thought I'd ask.

Any suggestions appreciated! :)

Thanks,
OchAye

Perthshire / Sent to Reformatory - Where?
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 20:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Luigi COSTADASI

Hoping someone can help me, I found this morning an article in the Evening Telegraph from Nov 1899 where the Judge sends my Great Grandfather (age 12) to prison for five days and then to Reformatory for three years.

When I look up the name in the National Archives online catalogue, there is nothing there for his name.  (His father is there for selling booze out of his ice-cream shop though!)  Maybe the Court records for young people were secret, like they are now?  I am in New Zealand and have ordered records on DVD from the NAS before, no problem, but I don't know how to find these court records.

I'd like to find out which Reformatory he was sent to so I can try for the records there.  Ideally I would be able to find the court records so that I could find out what prison as well.

Any suggestions appreciated,

Thanks very much, OchAye. :)

Fife / My Shady Family....
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 08:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

My GG Grandfather Giovanni COSTADASI was last recorded as such in 1903 in Burntisland.  The next time I can find him and his family is 1906, and they pop up in Musselburgh but their name has become LEONARDI.

Before that I have found records of a brush or two with the law, and family stories say that he was a drunk and went bankrupt.  I have previously hired a Genealogist at some expense to try to find out if there is any record of anything happening that might have caused the family to change their name, but I don't think she actually left Edinburgh so I'm hoping someone out there could offer some suggestions for resources I might look at - either online or in Burntisland.

The National Library has some digitised Post Office Directories but I can't find any there for Fife.  I wondered about newspapers - where would the old papers from a little place like that be these days?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks, OchAye :)

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Dunbar Post Office Directories
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 08:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I've had such good information from RootsChat I thought I'd give it another try - I'm looking at the National Library of Scotland website and they have many many digitised Post Office directories from 1800s, but I can't see anything for Haddingtonshire or Dunbar, does anyone know if there are any online anywhere?  I'm over in New Zealand so it's likely to be a while before I get to Scotland, I was hoping for something online.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks, Och Aye  :)

New Zealand Completed Requests / Temuka Wedding in 1929
« on: Monday 23 January 12 05:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to find some more information on the marriage of Charles GRANT and Irene O'KEEFE in Temuka in 1929, I am assuming they were married in the Catholic Church there.

Ideally I would find the birth date and place for Charles GRANT.  Does anyone know if the church records are accessible or if there is a newspaper archive or something of that nature?

Many thanks,
OchAye :)

Clackmannanshire / Am I blind? Where is 'The Square' Clackmannan? **COMPLETED**
« on: Monday 31 January 11 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

My Grandfather is recorded as being born at 5 Square, Clackmannan.  Various other Census records and Statutory records list this and neighbouring addresses for members of the family but I can't find it on the map!  I can't find anything on GoogleMaps that looks to me like a town square.

Can anyone tell me whether the name of it has changed, or has it gone entirely?

Much appreciated,

OchAye :)

Hi All,

I've found (through RootsChat) that my Great Grandfather was buried in Greenock Cemetery.  Could someone please take a photo of the headstone / grave for me?

John LEONARD (Giovanni LEONARDI originally) died 22 Jan 1933.  Buried in Section 2 / V, Lair 366.

I've attached a map of the Cemetery to this message, Section 2/V looks to be near the Golf Course Wall.

Much appreciated,
OchAye :)

Hi All,

My G G Grandfather Giovanni (John) LEONARDI died in West Greenock in 1933.

How would I find out where he is buried?  Ultimately I'd like to get a picture of his headstone or the MI.  From what I've read in some of the rootschat forums there are a number of cemeteries in the area, does anyone know if there is an online index?  (I'm in New Zealand.)

Any tips appreciated,
OchAye  :)
