Aberdeenshire / Clarke of Aberdeen
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 19:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for my ancestor John Clarke, born in 1779 in Scotland, probably  Aberdeen.

He married Jane Ogilvie, daughter of George Ogilvie 4th of Auchiries on the Isle of Man and they had Eliza Clarke who married Lister William Ellis, descendant of Graham Baronets, Earls, Dukes and Kings.

I therefore suspect the Clarke family  would probably have been fairly important in the past. John was a wine and spirit merchant and held the Earl of Lonsdale steam packet agency in Douglas. He was also one of the first trustees of the Athol Street chapel. I would love to know about his family.

Denbighshire / Wrexham Jones Davies 1860s and earlier
« on: Thursday 06 October 11 21:58 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors John Jones, a coal miner and Ellen Davies, married in St Giles, Wrexham on 11th Feb 1861, giving their fathers as Edward Jones, a collier and William Davies, a labourer. I don't know anything about their mothers or forebears and would love to. Can anybody help please?

John says he was born in Poolmouth and Gwersyllt, both Wrexham, on different censuses. The best bet from earlier census data for John's dad appears to be Edward Jones, a collier - in 1851 with an 8 yr old son John, but in 1861 his son John, a collier, is now 18, unmarried and living with him, whilst John and Ellen my ancestors are living on Poolmouth Rd, Wrexham, a few doors down from their wedding witnesses Joseph and Jane Lloyd.  So I've had to rule that family out.

The best bet for Ellen seems to be William Davies a carpenter in 1841, then a wheelwright in 1851, but his daughter Ellen is 4 years too old - my Ellen consistently gives her birth year as 1842 - and she was born in Llanddoget, though still in Denbighshire, a long way from Kings Mills, Wrexham, where my Ellen said she was born. Intriguingly her elder sister is called Jane, so I've tried to find a marriage for her to John Lloyd. There isn't one, but there is a Ruabon marriage between a Jane Davies and a Jenkin Lloyd (could he have called himself John?)

So I can't find ideal fits from census data. Can anyone please help?

Many thanks,

Jo Welch

The Common Room / Edward and John Jones and Ellen Davies Wrexham 1860s
« on: Wednesday 05 October 11 13:55 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help regarding my ancestor John Jones, a Wrexham collier born abt 1839 in Gwersyllt, son of Edward Jones, also a collier ? John married Ellen Davies (daughter of William Davies a labourer) in Wrexham Parish Church 11th Feb 1861 (witnesses Joseph and Jane Lloyd). He died in an 1880 mining accident, I believe, after which Ellen and her children moved to Irlam, Lancashire.

From census data Joseph Lloyd also seems to be a Wrexham collier. I wonder if he was John's friend or if Jane was the sister of John or Ellen?

Does anyone know please?

Lancashire / Olivia Winstanley 1806-1874

Can anyone help trace my 3 grt grandma please?
She married Samuel Wilson in Manchester Cathedral and lived in Newton Heath.
I have lots of records of their married life, but none of her childhood or christening, so I'm not sure of her parents.
The christening in Manchester Cathedral in 1829 is 5 yrs after her marriage, so unlikely to be her.
James Winstanley and Ann Joel are the best candidates for parents I have found, but they christened their other daughters, so why not her?

Thanks so much for your help,

Jo

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Mitchells Bradford - can anyone help please?
« on: Friday 11 February 11 14:35 GMT (UK)  »

My ancestor Ann Mitchell was born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1841, I think the sister of Sarah Jane and daughter of William Mitchell and Nancy.

Possible contenders for the above are:
William born 1817 Horton, Bradford son of Benjamin Mitchell and Sarah
Nancy Foster born 1821 and died 1901 in Bradford, daughter of William Foster and Mary Haste.

Do you happen to know anything about any of them please?

Thanks for reading this,

Jo

Scotland / John Clark & Jane Ogilvie / vy 1780s
« on: Monday 07 February 11 21:31 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestors John Clark and Jane Ogilvie were born in Scotland, but whereabouts I have no idea. All I know is that they both travelled to the Isle of Man, where they married in 1806, when John was 25.

John became a Douglas shopkeeper and wine merchant and trustee of the local church; Jane died early, in 1817, possibly through childbirth complications. John remarried Margaret McGuire, also I think from Scotland.

Does anyone know anything about these people please? I'd love to find out more - where they came from, their reasons for moving and if possible their parents too.

Thanks for your help,

Jo

The Common Room / Winefred Hawkins 1831 Ireland to Lancashire
« on: Monday 07 February 11 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the woman who with Martin Mulvey gave birth to my grt-grandfather, also Martin Mulvey, born in abt 1860, apparently in Miles Platting, Manchester, but almost certainly near or in the Salford region where he later lived.

In 1851 there's a Martin Mulvey aged 18, born Salford, renting in Salford. He's a dyer.
In 1861 there's a Martin Mulvey aged 30 from Ireland working as a farm labourer, renting with a  Warrington family of farm labourers. Also staying there is Winefred Hawkins, a farm labourer. Could they have been a couple?

With nothing else to go on - no birth cert, no censuses of 1860 Martin's early life, no other Martin Mulveys known to be in the area - this is my hottest lead so far (which shows how bad it's got!) I wonder if Martin and Winefred left the farm to further their romance, moved to Manchester and pretty quickly had Martin. Or even left Ireland as a couple.

3 points which may be of relevance:
1. My Grandma, Martin's daughter, was said to have Irish roots. If so, they're through him and / or his partner.
2. 1860 Martin had no trade. He was a porter in a stationery shop and later worked on the tramways.
3. There are no clues on the 1880 wedding cert. The witnesses are the bride's sister and brother-in-law. Martin said his father was a packer - so a general labourer just like the men above.

Does anyone know anything about Winefred Hawkins or even Martin Mulvey jnr or senior to put me straight on this?

Thanks so much for your help.

Does anyone know anything of Mary Ferns, coming from Ireland, born in the 1830s, living with Alfred Brownbill in Salford in the 1860s, mother to Alfred Brownbill Ferns 1865 and Lena Ferns 1884? I'd love to know where she came from and if possible, her parents.

Thanks so much for reading this.

Lancashire / Mulvey Pendleton, Salford

Does anyone know anything of Martin Mulvey, marrying Olivia Wilson (the daughter of Joseph Wilson and Sarah Cotterill) c 1880 in Salford? I'd love to know his parents, my ancestors. He was born c 1860 and towards the end of his life worked on the tramways in Salford until he sadly committed suicide, not wanting to be retired, in 1928.

He said he was born in Miles Platting and that his dad was Martin Mulvey (although another ancestor lied about this on his marriage cert so I'm not confident).

His dad may be Martin Mulvey - 18 in Salford in the 1851 census and I think buried in the Roman Catholic section of Philips Park cemetery.

Thanks for reading this.
