Staffordshire / Hancock/Smith - Hanley, Stoke upon Trent
« on: Friday 27 April 18 04:35 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather used to say that Captain Edward John Smith was his grandmother's brother but after years of trying to make a connection... I think I may have found that he was confused... Since Captain EJ Smith's mother was Catherine (Marsh) Hancock I'm thinking he assumed that that was the connection to his grandmother, Elizabeth Smith. Today while searching the 1841 Census I found a (K)atherine Hancock with an Elizabeth, Thomas, James, and Catherine Smith... all around the ages that my Elizabeth Smith would have been.

I'm not able to link the census page from ancestry because it's fee based but here is the link to the registry on the family search site.. the info on it is a bit off. Katherine Hancock could be either 45 or 65... the actual page could be either. Margaret Keen in the list says Margaret Karen on ancestry but looks more like Margaret Koen, and the 3 oldest Smith children are all listed as being 15 on the actual page which I doubt.

If anyone can shed light on who this Katherine Hancock was or who these Smith children belonged to... or anything at all... I would so appreciate it.

Edit: Was hard to find them in the 1851 Census on ancestry because someone transcribed them as Puth... here they are, minus Elizabeth Smith.. in 1851 Census at same place. It says James Smith is the son of Catherine Hancock and the other two Smith children are niece and nephew... and says Margaret Keen is the sister so looks like Catherine was a Keen. Hopefully someone has more information on this family...

Antrim / What can I expect from PRONI records?
« on: Thursday 26 April 18 20:06 BST (UK)  »
I found that my Antrim ancestors were listed as Church of Ireland and at least two members were baptized as such in 1837. When I searched for the records it shows that PRONI does hold them but you have to actually visit to see them... since I'm in Canada that just isn't going to happen. So, if I'm able to find someone who will go search for me what will I get for my money? Will I get actual copies of the pages found or do they only let you transcribe what is written there?
... and does anyone have a link for people who are willing to go to PRONI for people who can't visit themselves? Would appreciate any details anyone can give.
Thanks
Sherry

Antrim / Toal, Toule, Toil, Toll, Toole, O'Toole... all Antrim
« on: Monday 23 April 18 02:25 BST (UK)  »
I had been stuck on just my Thomas Toal, born between 1836 and 1845 depending on which record, who married in Canada and said he was from County Antrim, Ireland and his parents were John Toal and Jane Thomsom. Then I found a marriage, also in Canada in 1863, for John "Toil" born about 1835 in the only 3 records found on him.. and he says born in Ireland and parents John "Toil" and Jane Thomson. That family was hard to locate because they were in French speaking areas and the officials recorded the marriage as Toil and then Census as Tool.. some of them now use O'Toole.
So I had my DNA done and started coming up with other matches.. with same parents, John Toal & Jane Thomson... three women, Martha born about 1834, Mary born about 1840, and Elizabeth born about 1842. Martha married a John Stewart/Stuart in Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland in 1855 and they moved to Massachusetts, USA. Mary married Robert Nimmons in 1861 in Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland and they moved to Lanark, Scotland and Elizabeth moved to Scotland first and married Alexander Nimmons in 1861. Robert and Alexander Nimmons were brothers. All of the marriages and deaths list either names Toal or Toole but usually Toal. Some of their family ended up in Massachusetts, USA and New Hampshire, USA
Pretty sure there is also Jane Toal born about 1839 who married a different Alexander Nimmons in 1862 in Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland and then their children are all recorded as being born in Randalstown, Antrim, Ireland. I also connect through DNA to another family who has a Francis Toal and a Rose Toal but we have no idea who their parents are.
Have been searching for 20 years for information on John Toal and Jane Thomson but other than them being listed as parents of... I find nothing. Elizabeth's marriage in 1861 says her father is deceased but that is the only tidbit of info found at all. Does anyone have any advice or any information on where or how else I can find them and any other children them may have had?
Thank you in advance and I really appreciate any help/advice/info that anyone can provide.
Sherry
