Tyrone / Catherine WEIR nee McGRATH - Aughamullan
« on: Monday 20 September 21 16:38 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for anyone who recognises this  person in their research.  Catherine was born c1860 to Daniel & Sara, her baptism record not found.  Her siblings were John, Anne, Mary, all baptised in Clonoe RC church & Charles, his baptism record also not found, although the Parish Priest explained that there was no baptism for a Charles, but there was one for a Daniel (birth years match) one of the witnesses for that baptism was a Charles O'Neill, so Daniel could have been baptised one name & been called Charles  by the family .. not unheard of!

I believe that  the family were in Scotland (in 1871 census) when Catherine was 11yrs old.  At some point the family, or some of, returned to Aughamullan, Clonoe, where on 6 July 1881 Catherine married Patrick WEIR a ships carpenter from Scotland and I believe returned to Scotland where she is again found in 1891 census and her sister Anne (still unmarried) living with the family.  Catherine & her young family, ultimately emmigrate to Australia.

I have been researching the McGrath family for a great many years, in particular Charles in an effort to connect him to the Daniel McGrath & Sara/h O'Neill from Aughamullan.  Until I recently found an entry in the Scotland 1871 census, I was not aware that Catherine existed, unfortunately, the Scotland census only record "where born" as Ireland.  When Charles married in Belfast aged 24yrs his occupation is recorded as Rivetter and this always had me wondering how a farmers son could have obtained an apprenticeship in Aughamullen (I know people moved around for work).  The 1871 Scotland census, I think explains the possibility that Charles could have done his apprentiship in Scotland and likeky this is how Catherine met Patrick.  The paper trail for Catherine has lead me to believe that this is the family I have been searching for.

Should anyone have any knowedge of this family, I would certainly love to hear from you.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Dublin / Can you help with this
« on: Saturday 14 July 18 23:02 BST (UK)  »
I have a 16 year old on the 1901 census, under his occupation he is listed  ‘G Perry Factory’ and a 13 yr old at ‘Limerick House, Georges St’.  Both are living in the Merchants Quay area of Dublin.  Can anyone help shed some light on what these two establishments were?  I have done some ‘google’ searches but can’t find anything that helps.  Many thanks VB

Derry (Londonderry) / Help with SPALLEN family
« on: Thursday 03 October 13 19:46 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with finding this family?

1901 census says William SPALLEN born Co. Derry aged 40, 1911 census says Antrim aged 53... the usual discrepancies apply!  My belief is that the SPALLEN's were originally from Co, Derry but, after searching for a number of years I can't marry him up to any others.  I don't think they are to be confused with SPALLIN/SPALLAN/SPALLINGs also found in Derry, but I stand to be corrected.

I can't find his marriage, if there was a marriage, which would have been sometime between 1891 and 1893 and most likely in Belfast where he lived at the time, which would at least help with his father's name and occupation.  He definately had several children to this marriage including a set of twins. I do know the background details of his death and alsowhere he is buried.

I would also be very pleased to hear from anyone who has information regarding his descendants.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.  VB

Antrim / Great Georges Street
« on: Friday 31 August 12 08:31 BST (UK)  »
The last known reference (1918 BSD) refers to 63 Great Georges Street as being a Boys Home run by the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  Would anyone know if the same building number in 1951 was still used for a similar purpose?  The 1951 BSD shows a William Flynn - carter at the address.  There has been a suggestion that perhaps it had been damaged during The Blitz & rebuilt which may then have become a residential property.  I am interested to know why a 50 yr old would have this address on a death certificate if it was still used by St. Vincent de Paul and if it were residential how I can found out who the other residents were.  Would appreciate any information.  VB

Antrim / Hardinge Street - schools
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 00:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for any information about any schools that were built in Hardinge Street from about 1860 onwards and specifically who owned the land at the time.  There is the possiility that the church was donated or bequeathed the land and if that were the case, are there likely to be any land registery records that would help?

All suggestions are very welcome & thanks.  BV
