Travelling People / advice needed regarding my ancestors
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 23:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
i am looking for some advice on were to look or start my research
my mum also said that my family were involved in the circus
but i had no proof
my G G Grandfather John Bowen b 1842 was a travelling tailor by trade
he had children born all over ireland, england and wales
he and his wife seem to have settled in birmingham in about 1870ish
but i have recently found his oldest son also John Bowen b1866
0n the 1901 censes
RG13; Piece: 5005; Folio: 66; Page: 13
he is listed as 1 Travelling Van On Navigation Ground
On the census return John is shown as 'own account' re employment,
whereas the others in the travelling vans were either 'worker' or
'employer'. Why? And, can you decipher what is written over 'travelling
showman'.
is their records to see which show or circus this may have been or were is my best bet to find out more
i can see a William Hagger and a Daniel Lane also travelling with him

Warwickshire / trying to find bowen family before 1871 birmingham
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 03:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to find my G G Grandfather born 1842 Birmingham his name was John Bowen (i think)
he was a Tailor By Trade
the first Census i have found is 1871 RG10 5728 living in Bangor under John Bowen Jones
in 1881 they were living at blew St Birmingham RG11 3005
in 1891 they are at Camden St birmingahm RG12/2396
John died in 1909 Birmingham (i have the cert)
all attempts to trace him before 1871 have come up blank
also his wife was Mary Ann Brookes (i have four of the children's birth record)
listing Mother Formerly Brookes

i do know he had a sister Elizabeth born 1840 as his one daughter Rose Alice is listed living with
her aunt Elizabeth Perks in 1881 RG11 3023
and i found a marriage for Elizabeth Bowen to a Henry Perks in 1866
i sent for the cert and says father John Bowen Trade Carver & Guilder

any help of advice would be appreciated
                    regards rich
PS i have not been able to find the marriage for John and Mary
and to make things more complicated on Mary's death cert i says husband
