World War Two / Convoy Faith 1943
« on: Monday 13 April 20 16:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi, hope you are all well.
I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place, so apologies if not. I was going through my notes regarding my grandfather, Matthew Kerr Ramsay. It would seem that he was a survivor on board the SS California when it was hit by a German aircraft on 11th July 1943. The ship was part of "Convoy Faith" as it was taking nuns and priests to Sierra Leonne. I have seen a list of survivors on line but I can't for the life of me remember where. I just want to double check all the information before I attach the details to my grandfather's profile on my family tree. Would anyone be able to suggest where I saw this list please? I've tried looking everywhere I can think of, to no avail.
I would be so grateful for any thoughts.
Many thanks,
Meggy

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Occupation of tambourer in Bo'ness
« on: Tuesday 24 September 19 13:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
My Great x 2 grandmother's occupation on the 1851 census in Bo'ness was a Tambourer. I have since found out that this was something to do with lace making. Quite a few of the other women on the census form are listed as this, so I wondered if anyone knew if there was a factory or employer of some sort in the area?
Many Thanks.

« on: Thursday 10 May 18 13:22 BST (UK)  »
I have come across an ancestor whose occupation was "outworker" . This was in Scotland in 1870 and a female. What would this typically be?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Midlothian / Edinburgh Electoral Register
« on: Tuesday 27 March 18 14:53 BST (UK)  »
Good Afternoon. I have been looking at the electoral registers in Edinburgh in the 1930s and discovered my grandfather is listed in 1935 on a "Persons No Longer Qualified as Electors" list. Anyone know what this means please? I know he was away at sea - did that mean he wasn't able to vote even though he obviously had a home in Edinburgh?

Appreciate any thoughts!

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Alexander Archibald
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 13:16 GMT (UK)  »
Good Afternoon. I have been searching for a birth record of this chap for a while now and getting frustrated ! According to Census records, he was born in Haddington around 1847 and was married to Elizabeth Craig. His parents were Thomas Archibald and Euphemia Robertson. I have a record of his death dated 1903 while at work in the Clyde Colliery, Hamilton. I have tried Scotlands People and Ancestry, but no luck - either that, or I have a massive blind spot!

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

Midlothian / Wedding in Edinburgh
« on: Sunday 19 February 17 13:59 GMT (UK)  »
On my grandparents wedding certificate, it states that they were married "according to the forms of United Free Church of Sotland" at 18 Bonaly Road in 1927. The record also states that the bride's usual residence was this address also. Does any one know if this was common practice?

Thanks for any input!
