Perthshire / McRobbie burials Crieff 1800's
« on: Sunday 16 October 11 17:02 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help.  I am looking for a burial of John McRobbie between 1817 and 1833.  Hopefully, the name of his wife, Margaret Douglas, appears with record.  Also I am hoping for his age at death.  He may have been in his 60's or 70's.  There may also be, on the same tombstone,  James McRobbie, son of John McRobbie and Margaret Douglas.  James  would have died between Dec 3 1809 and Mar 1812 aged infant to 2 years old.

Thanks for any help.

« on: Monday 03 October 11 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a burial record for Elizabeth Turnbull who died 26 Oct 1768.   Her husband, Andrew Irvine, died 15 May, 1758 in Minto.  I have death dates and Andrew's birth date (1701) but I need to know how old Elizabeth was when she died.

Thanks,

Northumberland / James Gray marriage Belford
« on: Sunday 25 September 11 17:25 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a record of marriage for a James Gray and Isabel(la) Fairington.  Her name could be McFarlane or ............?

James was born in Hawick and baptised in the presence of the Associate Congregation.    I understand that the United Associate Congregation (United Secession Church) in Belford is where Scottish dissenters went.

If James Gray was married there, it was in May of 1832 or May of 1833 just before emigrating to Canada.  The minister may have been John Hunter.

I would appreciate any help.  Thanks!!

Roxburghshire / Minto 1723 handwriting
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 21:04 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone will recognize the name of a town or farm

I am trying to decipher the handwriting in a document that has the marriage of Andrew Irving to Bessie Turnbull in 1723.  family history has fortunately given me some of the information.

This is what I have:

Andrew Irvine son to Thomas Irvine in Wester houses was married to Bessie Turnbull daughter to William Turnbull in Hakondeanbank thirteen day of June

On the same page Minto is mentioned a couple of times and Monks croft once.
One of the sons of this couple is born in Monks croft (maybe others).

I think I have all the letters correct in the place for William Turnbull except for the first and third letters.   Hakondeanbank is mentioned a second time.  I couldn't find similar letters in any word I could read.

I think Bessie may have been born in Bedrule and hopefully the location fits.

I am hoping this place looks familiar!

Thanks,

Jan

Dumfriesshire / St Mungo Ecclefechan Thomas Kerr burial
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I live in Canada where the Kerr family arrived in about 1854.   Therefore, I rely on a combination of old family letters and the internet.

Some background before I ask my question.

John Kerr (1801-1877) and his wife Mary Gowanlock (1801-1879), raised their family at Grahamshall, Hoddam, until they moved to Redhall in Wigton, Cumberland.  John and Mary were both buried in the St Mungo Churchyard.

John's brother, Thomas (1817-1881) was born in St Mungo, died at Redhall, Cumberland and was buried St Mungo Churchyard.  A nephew wrote the following note:

Sir,
Thomas Kerr, my Uncle, Died here this Morning, and his remains are to be interred in St. Mungo's Church Yard, on Saturday, the 15th current.

The favour of your company at Ecclefechan Station to meet the Train, which will stop there by arrangement at 10.5 o'clock a.m. will oblige.

Sir,
Your obedient servant.

Family notes state that Thomas' wife died in Australia in 1865.  Other notes state he was in NewZealand and had several children.  Some children names: Jean, John, Madelene.

My question:  If anyone has access to St Mungo churchyard, I am wondering if anywhere Thomas' wife and/or children might be mentioned?  I have searched extensively and been unable to find even her first name.  Thomas was in England in 1843 (from Father's will) so may have married there, in NZ or Aust.  His wife died in Australia in 1865.

Probate mentions a nephew John Hayward and his parents were William Kerr and Phillis Bell.

Any help/advice would be welcomed.

England / Thomas Kerr New Zealand Australia England Scotland
« on: Friday 09 September 11 21:10 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the brother of my 2x great grandfather John Kerr.

Thomas Kerr was born in St Mungo Dumfriesshire Scotland on Oct 1 1817.  Baptised there on 12 Oct 1817.   In 1843 (at the time his father's will was being written) he was somewhere in England.   Older brother William landed at Port Adelaide S Australia Apr 7 1864.  He died in Tea Tree Gully 1868.

Thomas returned to England (the entire family had moved) and when he died 12 Oct 1881 in Wigton, Cumberland, England, his body was sent to St Mungo Scotland for burial.

Family jot notes tell the following:

Thomas' wife died in Australia in 1865.  Since Thomas had returned to England before 1881, he requested he be buried in Scotland rather than Australia.

At some point he was in New Zealand.  He had the following children but I don't know where they were born:   several children, pr twins, died young
Jean Marshall- boy- John Kerr Marshall   Girl- Madelene

The above is a quote and a little confusing.

Thomas' parents were William Kerr and Phillis Bell.

Thanks for any help.

Roxburghshire / Gray Hawick Kirktown
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 23:24 BST (UK)  »
With help from a few on rootschat I have managed to find baptismal records on Gray ancestors from Hawick born early 1800's.  I am hoping for help to go further back.

My 3x great grandparents Gilbert Gray and Margaret Riddle were married 12 Oct 1802 Edgerston.  This I know from family records.   They moved back and forth across the border and had 8 children.   They emigrated to Canada in the 1830's but may have had 3 of the 8 children die before they left Scotland.   I have deaths in Ontario, Canada for parents plus 5 of the offspring.

I have learned that in the Parish Church records at Hawick there are the following burial records

8 Aug 1806, Agnes Bleakie, spouse of Peter Grey
22 Dec 1810, Janet Grey, dau of Gilbert Gray.

Gilbert and Margaret had a daughter Jannet born June 15 1809 and she did not arrive in Canada.

I believe Gilbert's parents are Peter Gray and Agnes Aitkin/Bleakie.   This is my next step.  I would like to prove that I have the right parents.  This would also give me Gilbert's siblings, James, Janet and Walter.

I also have names on a photo taken probably 1850's or 60's of a Walter and Jeannie Gray and also Bert and Aggie Gray.   I have no Walter in my tree so maybe another connection to Scotland.

Perhaps a long lost cousin will read this!!!

Thanks for any help.
