Laois (Queens) / Green Family
« on: Tuesday 02 February 16 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking for some advice.

My great grandfather Daniel Green (Irish Roman Catholic) married Lily Guest nee Goddard (not catholic) in Nottingham in 1920. On his wedding cert it says his father is James Green deceased. Daniels job description is ex Army.

To trace Daniel's family backwards I went into the 1901 Irish census and there is a James Green wife Mary and his daughter Eliza aged 27 and grandson Daniel aged 14. Living in Durrow Queens Co.

Fast forward to 1911 and Eliza is now married to Willie Jackson living in Nottingham with their daughter and Daniel who is now her brother, the place of birth for both is Durrow Queens Co.  The birth dates are all a bit out by a year or two but I am convinced they are the right people because my Daniel had lost his right arm at some point and the census advises us that he indeed is missing his right arm. I cant imagine there would be more than one Daniel Green in 1911 in Nottingham with one arm from Ireland. Family tale also states that Daniel came to the UK with his mother, but no reason why.
So my thoughts are..... Daniel is indeed Eliza's son, but when she moved to the UK she listed him as her brother, I'm guessing so she could marry well.

Therefore how do I find out which Army Daniel was in, am presuming Irish.
I can find no record of him and Eliza coming to the UK.
I cant find any record of any further children for James and Mary.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
Beth

Graveyards and Gravestones / Stranger in grave...
« on: Friday 27 June 14 11:36 BST (UK)  »
So went onto Deceased online last night and discovered my 3 x G grandmother's burial scan... where she was buried in 1918. Only to find that there is also a total stranger in the grave too buried in 1968!.

is this normal? I know that at times there can be still borns etc but this was a grown woman of 70yo!

I did some investigation but I cannot find any link of her to my family. She wasn't even from the same area.

World War One / WW1 medals
« on: Saturday 14 September 13 18:54 BST (UK)  »
I have managed to find my great grand father's milita records.  It appears that he was in Derby Regiment in 1893, and in 1901 he is in Normanton Barracks as a CPL, then he appears to leave the army as he is a bricklayer lab in 1911 census but then is in the Notts and Derbyshire Reg (Sherwood Foresters 10th Bttn) by 1917.  However I cannot find his WW1 records.  My question is.. will he have got any medals from his milita time and how do I find out who collected his medals from his WW1 time?  He did survive the war so am presuming he collected them but his marriage was going through a bad time at the end of the war so I have no confirmation that he actually received them.

If I have a grave number of Basford Cemetery, which is the best place to find out who is in that grave? Do I need to contact the Nottingham Council or would someone have it on CD?
Family name is Johnson and grave number is 4723

Nottinghamshire / Nottingham City Council
« on: Wednesday 15 May 13 18:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My great grandfather was a night watchman for the "cooperation", could I get his work information from Nottingham City Council? He basically kept an eye on housing estates being built at night to prevent thieves.

Also would they provide this info if they can under the freedom of information act?

thanks in advance for any help
